The POCO F9 Ultra’s 10,000-nit rating describes a brief, tiny-area HDR peak—not the brightness of the whole screen or a promise of better everyday outdoor visibility. POCO specifies that peak over 1% of the display; its figures for larger areas and other brightness modes are lower. To judge practical brightness, compare the conditions behind the numbers, not just the biggest one.
What does the POCO F9 Ultra’s 10,000-nit figure mean?
POCO Australia lists a maximum of 10,000 nits (cd/m²) over 1% of the display area and 4,500 nits over 25%. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. The UAE product page frames the 10,000-nit peak as serving HDR-video highlights, while describing 4,500 nits as multi-scenario peak brightness. POCO UAE product page · POCO Australia specifications
A 1% area condition matters: a small bright highlight in an HDR scene may reach a much higher peak than a largely white screen. The number does not mean the panel sustains 10,000 nits across its full surface, that every HDR scene reaches that level, or that ordinary apps appear that bright. The manufacturer’s peak claim is one specific maximum under a specified display-area condition—not a general measure of screen brightness.
How do the other brightness figures compare?
POCO’s and Xiaomi’s published figures describe different conditions, so they should not be treated as interchangeable readings of one mode. The figures below are manufacturer specifications from regional pages, not independent test results.

Check the wording and conditions on the relevant regional page rather than assuming those labels mean precisely the same thing. Xiaomi says its Sunlight mode requires automatic brightness to be enabled. Xiaomi Philippines brightness FAQ
Does 10,000 nits make the phone brighter outdoors?
Not by itself. Outdoor readability depends on the brightness available in the relevant operating mode and content conditions, as well as the screen’s behavior under a test that resembles real use. A small-area HDR peak is not the same as global high-brightness mode or a manually adjustable setting.

Notebookcheck’s 2026 review says the phone remained easy to read in direct sunlight, but did not outperform its predecessor for typical content or outdoor readability. Its instrument reached its limit at 8,500 cd/m², so the test did not independently establish a precise 10,000-nit result. The outlet reports 2,435 cd/m² using its APL18 measurement; that result belongs to its method and reviewed sample, not every F9 Ultra or every brightness condition. Notebookcheck review (October 6, 2026)
Notebookcheck reviewer Daniel Schmidt’s conclusion was: “The 10,000 cd/m² is thus primarily a spectacular peak value for small HDR areas rather than a practical upgrade.” That is the reviewer’s assessment of the peak’s everyday significance, not a claim that the phone cannot be used outdoors.

How to compare phone brightness claims fairly
When comparing the F9 Ultra with another phone, line up the conditions behind each figure. A headline peak from one device should not be compared directly with another device’s global-brightness number.
- Display area or test pattern: Check whether the figure covers a tiny percentage of the screen, a larger area, or a defined review pattern such as APL18.
- Content: Separate HDR peak performance from ordinary or SDR content; a mode or peak tied to HDR highlights may not represent everyday apps.
- Peak versus global brightness: Find out whether the number applies to a local highlight or a larger portion of the display.
- Automatic versus manual control: Distinguish HBM or sunlight modes from the maximum brightness a user can select manually. Check whether a mode requires automatic brightness.
- Independent measurements: Prefer reviews that disclose their method, test conditions, and sample; do not treat a manufacturer specification as a lab result.
What should buyers take from the headline number?
The 10,000-nit figure alone is not evidence of a meaningful everyday brightness advantage. It describes a manufacturer-stated peak for a small display area, while the other published figures describe larger areas or operating modes. For a buying decision, compare independent measurements under similar conditions and look for specific commentary on outdoor readability. Notebookcheck’s review says the F9 Ultra is easy to read in direct sunlight, even though its test found no outdoor-readability advantage over the predecessor.
