Not every Plex viewer needs a separate subscription. For remote video playback from a personal Plex Media Server on an affected app, Plex requires that either the server administrator has Plex Pass, the viewer has Plex Pass, or the viewer has Remote Watch Pass. Plex says local streaming, remote music in Plexamp, and remote photos in Plex Photos remain free.
What Plex changed—and what it did not
Since April 29, 2025, Plex has required a qualifying pass for remote playback of personal videos on apps receiving the new experience. “Remote” means the player is outside the network where the Plex Media Server is running. The policy is about video in a personal library, not every use of Plex. Plex’s Remote Watch Pass support page describes the requirement and exemptions.

- Remote personal video: A qualifying Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass is required on an affected app.
- Video on the server’s local network: Still free.
- Remote music in Plexamp and remote photos in Plex Photos: Exempt from this pass requirement.
Plex explained the change in a March 19, 2025 company update: “The reality is that we need more resources to continue putting forth the best personal media experience, and as a result, we will no longer offer remote playback as a free feature.” Plex, “Important 2025 Plex Updates”.
Who needs to pay: the server owner or each viewer?
The key is that the server administrator’s Plex Pass covers all Plex accounts accessing that server for remote playback. If the server admin has Plex Pass, other full accounts do not each need their own pass to watch remotely from that server. Plex’s eligibility guidance sets out these account rules.

Remote Watch Pass is tied to the account that buys it; it is not a substitute for a server owner’s pass that covers everyone. Plex says it can also apply to managed accounts when you switch to that account in a player app. See Plex’s account guidance for details.
How much does Remote Watch Pass cost?
Plex’s plans page lists standard U.S. pricing at $2.99 per month or $29.99 per year. Its introductory offer was $1.99 monthly or $19.99 annually for qualifying billing cycles before June 1, 2026; that offer period has passed. Remote Watch Pass provides remote playback, not the additional features bundled with Plex Pass. If you also want Plex Pass features, compare the current plans before choosing; the relevant question for this policy is whether the server admin or the viewer already qualifies.

These announcements do not provide a definitive, current checklist of which individual app versions have completed rollout. Plex also said other TV apps and third-party API clients would follow during 2026; a September 2026 forum discussion shows that enforcement on third-party clients remained a point of confusion. Check both the pass rule and Remote Access
A pass and a reachable server solve different problems. A qualifying pass satisfies the account rule; it does not configure your home network. Plex says Remote Access must also be enabled successfully for a player outside your home network to reach the server. If playback still fails after confirming eligibility, check the server’s Remote Access status and troubleshoot network reachability, including router, firewall, NAT, or ISP constraints. What the change means for Plex mobile users
Previously, Plex mobile apps could impose a one-minute playback limit unless users made a one-time activation payment or had Plex Pass. Plex said the new mobile experience removed that one-minute limit, while remote personal video playback remained subject to the pass requirement. Some people who paid for the earlier one-time mobile activation may qualify for a three-month Remote Watch Pass trial. Plex’s support terms require redeeming it in the same mobile platform and with the same app-store account used for the original purchase; it cannot be redeemed through Plex’s website or a different app store.
