Standard, Deluxe, and Ultimate do not have fixed meanings across PlayStation Store games. The exact contents depend on the title, so compare the listing’s included game versions, named add-ons, in-game extras, and upgrade terms before choosing. Pay more only for items you actually want.
What do Standard, Deluxe, and Ultimate mean?
They are edition labels, not a universal content checklist. One game’s Deluxe Edition may add cosmetics and digital items, while another game may bundle expansions or a content pass. Even “Ultimate” does not guarantee the same kind of content from one title to another.
Use the itemized contents on the specific game’s current, regional PlayStation Store listing as the deciding evidence. The listing for Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles offers one illustration—not a template for other games.

The cited US Store listing shows PS4 and PS5 availability across the editions below. Its contents are specific to this game and may change; check the live listing before buying.

In this example, the Character Pass distinguishes Ultimate from Digital Deluxe. That does not make Ultimate the best choice for every player: its value depends on whether you want the pass and other included items at the current price.
How to compare editions before buying
- Confirm the game version. Check whether that specific listing includes PS4, PS5, or both. An edition name alone does not establish cross-generation access.
- Identify playable add-ons. Look for named expansions, season passes, or character passes, and confirm whether they are included in that tier or sold separately.
- Separate gameplay from extras. Note unlock keys, costumes, in-game currency, avatars, themes, and other items. Decide which ones matter to you rather than treating every bundle item as equal value.
- Check the upgrade terms. If you need a PS5 version, verify whether it is included or requires a separate upgrade. PlayStation says eligible PS4 games may offer a free upgrade, a paid upgrade, or a time-limited offer; terms vary by game. See PlayStation’s PS4-to-PS5 upgrade guidance.
- Account for disc requirements. A PS4 disc upgrade requires a PS5 with a disc drive, and you must keep the disc inserted to play the upgraded digital game. PS4 discs cannot be used with PS5 Digital Edition. PlayStation explains these requirements in its PS5 backward-compatibility guidance.
- Compare the current regional price. Store prices, discounts, and offer deadlines can change. Check the listing for your region both when deciding and when purchasing; a displayed promotional end date is only a snapshot, not a standing offer.
Which edition should you choose?
Choose Standard when
- You want the base game and do not value the higher tiers’ specific extras enough to pay more.
- You are unsure about a pass or cosmetic bundle and would rather decide based on the game itself.
Consider Deluxe or Ultimate when
- You have checked the exact included add-ons and know you want them.
- The current price difference makes sense for the content you expect to use.
Do not pay extra based on “Deluxe” or “Ultimate” alone. Compare the actual contents and prices shown for the edition you intend to buy.

If you already own the PS4 game
Open the game’s PS5 hub and inspect the upgrade offer rather than assuming your edition includes a PS5 copy. Depending on the game, an upgrade may be free, paid, or time limited. PlayStation also says PS4 games redeemed as a PlayStation Plus benefit are not eligible unless otherwise indicated. For a disc-based upgrade, the console must have a disc drive and the disc is required whenever you play the upgraded game. Check the game-specific terms in PlayStation’s upgrade guidance.
