Yes. PlayStation Network (PSN) had an hours-long outage on Tuesday, October 1, 2024. Players reported sign-in problems and trouble creating accounts, launching games, and accessing video. The Associated Press reported that service was restored by morning in the United States, but did not give exact start or restoration times or identify a cause.
What happened during the October 2024 PSN outage?
Reports of problems began late Monday and continued into early Tuesday, October 1. PlayStation’s website acknowledged that some services were experiencing issues, warning users they might have difficulty signing in, creating accounts, launching games, or accessing video content. PlayStation said, “We are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible.”
The Associated Press described complaints from around the world and reported that Downdetector received thousands of reports. That figure counts reports submitted to an outage tracker, not verified unique players or affected accounts. By U.S. morning, the PlayStation Network website displayed, “All services are up and running.” Associated Press coverage of the October 1, 2024 outage
Why couldn’t players sign in?
The cause was not established in the contemporaneous Associated Press report. It said Sony had not immediately responded to a request for comment and did not explain what caused the interruption. There is therefore no basis in that report to attribute this outage to a cyberattack, a DDoS attack, a cloud provider, or a failure in a particular network component.

How long was PSN down, and how many people were affected?
The outage lasted hours, and AP reported that service had been restored by morning in the United States. The report does not provide precise outage start and end times, so a more exact duration cannot be stated from this account. It also does not establish how many individual players or accounts were affected; the thousands of Downdetector reports are not an affected-user count.
Is PlayStation Network back up?
The outage described here was reported on October 1, 2024, and PlayStation’s status page showed services running after restoration. That historical report does not establish whether PSN is available during a later connection problem. Check PlayStation’s live service-status page for current availability; its status can change, and external internet-wide issues may also affect access.

What to do if you can’t connect to PSN now
A service outage and a problem with one player’s connection can produce similar symptoms. Check the official status page first. If it shows no relevant service problem, follow PlayStation’s general troubleshooting guidance for PS5 error E2-8223b400, which says server congestion may prevent a console from connecting:
- Check PSN status. Visit the PlayStation Service Status page to see whether services are reporting problems.
- Restart your router and modem. Turn both off, wait at least five minutes, then turn them back on.
- Try the connection again. If PSN status is normal but the error persists, consult PlayStation’s E2-8223b400 support steps for further guidance.
These are general steps for a current connection error; they do not show that a user’s router caused the October 2024 outage. A router restart cannot restore a service that is down on PlayStation’s side.

Does PlayStation’s maintenance notice explain the outage?
No. PlayStation’s Australia and New Zealand terms of service, version 10.2, say the company may take PSN or products offline to investigate a security incident or perform maintenance and upgrades. That is a general statement about possible service interruptions, not an explanation of what happened on October 1, 2024. PlayStation Network Terms of Service for Australia and New Zealand

The available reporting does not establish that Sony granted a benefit specifically for the October 2024 incident. A notice on PlayStation’s current notices page refers to five extra PlayStation Plus days after a “recent PlayStation outage,” but it does not identify that outage as the one from October 2024.
