In principle, yes: a black hole with several times Earth’s mass could exert gravity similar to that of the hypothesized distant planet and perturb the orbits of some trans-Neptunian objects. But this is a theoretical alternative, not a discovery. Neither Planet Nine nor a primordial black hole in the Solar System has been confirmed.
What are the two hypotheses?
Both ideas seek to explain unusual patterns reported in the orbits of some trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs)—small bodies that orbit the Sun beyond Neptune. The Planet Nine hypothesis attributes those patterns to the gravity of an unseen planet. The primordial black hole (PBH) proposal keeps the gravitational explanation but suggests the unseen object could instead be a black hole formed in the early universe and later captured by the Solar System.
NASA notes that the apparent clustering could have a different explanation, including that the objects are distributed randomly. It also states the possibility plainly: “Another possibility is that Planet X (Planet Nine) does not exist at all.” NASA Science, “Hypothetical Planet X”.
How do the hypotheses compare?
| Question | Planet Nine | Primordial black hole |
|---|---|---|
| What is the proposed object? | An undiscovered distant planet. | A primordial black hole captured into the Solar System. |
| How might it affect TNOs? | Its gravity could shape or perturb the orbits of distant objects. | Its gravity could produce similar perturbations. |
| What model or motivation is cited? | A 2019 review summarizes a representative dynamical model; its parameters are estimates, not measurements. | A 2020 paper by Jakub Scholtz and James Unwin proposes a captured PBH as an explanation and discusses a PBH population in connection with OGLE microlensing events. |
| What could help distinguish it? | Direct searches for a planet and further tests of predicted orbital effects. | The 2020 paper proposes searching for possible annihilation signals from a dark-matter microhalo around the PBH. |
| What is the key limitation? | It has not been observationally confirmed, and searches exclude only part of a specified model parameter space. | It remains speculative; the proposed signal is a possible test, not a reported detection. |
What does the Planet Nine model predict?
A 2019 review by Konstantin Batygin, Fred C. Adams, Michael E. Brown, and Juliette Becker gives representative estimates of about 5–10 Earth masses, a semimajor axis of about 400–800 astronomical units (AU), eccentricity of about 0.2–0.5, and inclination of about 15–25 degrees. These values describe a model used to explain the dynamics; they are not observed properties of a known planet. The Planet Nine Hypothesis (2019 review).

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What have searches ruled out?
A 2024 Pan-STARRS1 search reported a 50% completion depth of V = 21.5 for the tested model. Combining that search with earlier analyses from the Zwicky Transient Facility and Dark Energy Survey, the authors reported excluding 78% of the Brown–Batygin parameter space. That percentage refers to the specified model space—not a 78% probability that Planet Nine is false, and not proof for the PBH alternative. Pan-STARRS1 constraints on Planet Nine (2024).
How could astronomers tell whether it is a planet or a black hole?
The two objects could produce similar gravitational effects, so orbital evidence alone may not settle what the object is. Scholtz and Unwin proposed looking for annihilation signals from a dark-matter microhalo around a PBH as a possible distinguishing observation. Their paper presents this as a route to investigate, not as a signal already seen. They wrote: “The observational constraints on a PBH in the outer Solar System significantly differ from the case of a new ninth planet.” Jakub Scholtz and James Unwin, “What If Planet 9 Is a Primordial Black Hole?” (2020).

Is either explanation more likely?
The cited sources do not provide a direct probability comparison between the planet and PBH explanations. The model’s estimated orbital parameters and the reported survey exclusions describe different things; neither establishes that one hypothesis is more likely overall. The evidence supports treating both as unconfirmed possibilities, with the PBH idea remaining a theoretical alternative rather than an identified object.
