It can run in a standalone window or as a screensaver, making it appealing if you want music-reactive visuals without a Spotify-specific integration. One important caveat: Plane9’s download page lists version 2.5.1.3, released December 29, 2016, and names Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10; that listing does not establish compatibility with current Windows versions or hardware.
What Plane9 does
Plane9 responds to sound with animated 3D visuals. Its publisher describes three ways to use it: in a standalone window, as a screensaver, or in the VR modes listed on its site. It can use sound from the computer, and the homepage also describes input from a microphone or another audio source.
The publisher lists more than 250 predefined scenes and 39 transitions on its homepage. Its download page says background, foreground, and postprocessing scenes can be combined into more than 10,000 possible combinations. These are Plane9’s feature claims, not independently counted results.
Will Plane9 visualize Spotify or other computer audio?
Plane9’s FAQ says Spotify does not provide a visualizer API. Instead, Plane9 can respond indirectly to sound produced by the computer, including audio from Spotify or another sound-generating program. That is system-audio response, not a Spotify-specific integration or control panel.

Modes and features

| Screensaver | Use sound-responsive scenes as a screensaver; the usage instructions specifically refer to Windows 7 and are legacy guidance. |

| Configuration and playlists | A configuration window and playlist support are listed on the download page. |

Requirements and compatibility caveats
Plane9’s download page lists Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10 in 32-bit or 64-bit editions, plus a graphics card supporting OpenGL 3.3. Its FAQ recommends a recent OpenGL 4.0-or-newer graphics card. These are requirements from a product listing for version 2.5.1.3, released December 29, 2016—not proof that the software works on current Windows releases, recent graphics drivers, or contemporary VR equipment.

Price, licensing, and privacy
The download page labels Plane9 free. Free software does not mean every use of its output is unrestricted: the publisher says individual scenes have licensing conditions, and some may not be relicensed for commercial use. Check the license and tags for the particular scene and use case before using visuals commercially.

It also prohibits certain content and selling, licensing, or paywalling videos containing Plane9 visuals. Consult the current FAQ and applicable scene license for the complete terms.
According to the FAQ, Plane9 checks for new versions and describes optional anonymous usage data. The listed data can include a random installation identifier, graphics-card type, runtime and usage measures, monitor count and desktop size, and memory. The publisher says these checks can be disabled under Config > Options. This is the publisher’s own description, not an independent privacy audit.

Who should consider Plane9?
Plane9 may suit someone looking for a visualizer that reacts to computer audio and can also serve as a screensaver, particularly if they are comfortable with an older Windows-era application and its dated compatibility information. If you need confirmed support for a current Windows release, modern VR equipment, or a particular graphics setup, the publisher’s historical listing is not enough to establish it. Plane9 is downloadable software; the available information does not show that buying a graphics card, headset, or other accessory is necessary.
