The Planck Creator SSD 2TB is a tiny USB-C external drive for adding portable file storage and, on supported devices, recording video directly to an SSD. It does not increase a phone’s built-in capacity or make every camera save to the drive automatically. The key distinction is workflow: supported iPhone Pro models can record ProRes to it, ordinary iPhone photos must be transferred afterward, and Android recording depends on the camera app.
What the Planck Creator SSD 2TB offers
Planck lists the Creator SSD in 1TB and 2TB capacities. Its product page specifies NVMe storage, a USB-C USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface, and exFAT as the default file system. Planck rates read and write speeds at “up to 1050 MBps” (also rendered as MB/s). That is a manufacturer maximum claim, not an independently measured or guaranteed sustained speed. Planck’s product page is the source for these specifications.
The 2TB model is a physical external drive: connect it to a compatible device’s USB-C port to access it as storage. It can hold and move files, but it does not expand a phone’s internal storage or change its default camera-save behavior.
Size, construction, and included pieces
Planck lists dimensions of 17 × 50 × 7.8 mm and a weight of 10 g, with aluminum and PC construction. The box includes a USB-C extender and silicone bumper. These are vendor specifications, rather than independent measurements. Planck says the drive works with or without a case; its setup guidance notes that an extra-thick case may require the included extender for a secure connection.

What it can do with an iPhone
The most distinctive phone workflow is direct video recording. Planck’s setup guide names iPhone 15, 16, and 17 Pro and Pro Max models as able to record ProRes directly to the drive. Planck’s product page states: “Record stunning Apple ProRes video at up to 4K120 directly to your Planck SSD.” That is the manufacturer’s capability statement, not a third-party test. Confirm that your exact iPhone model, iOS version, and recording app support the workflow before relying on it.
Record ProRes directly to the drive
- Connect the SSD to the iPhone’s USB-C port. If a thick case prevents a secure fit, use the included extender.
- Open Settings > Camera > Formats and enable ProRes.
- Open Camera, choose ProRes, and check that the external drive appears as the recording destination before you begin.
Planck also documents an alternative setup in supported third-party camera apps: set the media location to Files > Planck SSD. App menus and capabilities vary, so verify the destination setting in the app you intend to use. The setup instructions are on Planck’s usage guide.

Transfer ordinary iPhone photos afterward
Apple’s native camera does not let users choose an external SSD as the ordinary photo-save location, according to Planck’s setup guide. Take pictures with the native Camera app first, then select the images in Photos, tap Share, and choose Save to Files to copy them to the Planck SSD. This is a transfer workflow, not direct capture to the drive.
What it can do with Android phones
Planck says USB-C Android phones can use the SSD as external storage. For recording straight to the drive, its instructions use third-party camera apps that expose a media-location setting. Choose the SSD as the location if your selected app offers that option. The available guidance does not establish that every Android camera app can record externally, so check the specific app and phone rather than assuming the native camera supports it.

Compatibility beyond phones
Planck lists compatibility with iPhone 15 and later, Android phones, iPads and Android tablets, macOS, Windows, Linux, and PlayStation and Xbox consoles. These are vendor compatibility statements; confirm support for your exact device, operating system, and intended use. Planck says maximum console performance requires a host with USB 3.2 Gen 2 or higher.
For laptops and tablets, the drive serves as external file storage. Actual transfer speeds depend on the host connection and other conditions; the “up to 1050” rating alone does not establish the speed you will see in a particular setup.

How it compares with other portable SSDs
Two manufacturer-documented alternatives in the portable SSD category are SanDisk Phone SSD and Samsung Portable SSD T9. Their published specifications offer reference points, not a basis for ranking performance: the listed speed measures differ, and the sources do not provide comparable independent tests.

A 9to5Mac hands-on article published February 4, 2026 describes Planck as particularly phone-friendly because of its small form factor and presents it as an option for some people considering external storage instead of buying a higher-capacity iPhone.
