Planar magnetic headphones do not automatically sound better than dynamic headphones, weigh more, or require a dedicated amplifier. Driver type describes how a headphone makes sound; the model’s tuning, construction, fit, sensitivity, impedance, and your audio source determine whether it is right for you.

How planar magnetic and dynamic drivers work

Dynamic drivers

A dynamic headphone uses a voice coil attached to a diaphragm, often shaped as a cone or dome. When the coil moves in a magnetic field, it moves the diaphragm and produces sound. The basic mechanism is widespread across headphones of many sizes and designs.

Planar magnetic drivers

A planar magnetic headphone uses a thin, flat diaphragm with conductive traces distributed across it. Magnetic arrays move the diaphragm in response to an audio signal. FiiO describes its FT5 as having a 90 mm planar driver; that is a specification for this model, not a standard size for planar headphones. FiiO’s product page explains the mechanisms in its own terms, while Bose also describes the driver distinction: FiiO FT5 product page and Bose explanation of planar magnetic drivers.

Do planar magnetic headphones sound better?

Not as a rule. Planar models are often associated with strong low-bass extension, but the driver label alone cannot tell you whether a headphone will sound balanced, bass-heavy, bright, or natural to you. Tuning and the rest of the design matter. RTINGS notes both potential planar strengths and model-dependent trade-offs, and emphasizes the importance of build quality and manufacturer precision in overall performance. Its comparison, rewritten July 4, 2025, is RTINGS’ planar magnetic vs. dynamic comparison.

There is no controlled listening result here that isolates driver type while holding tuning and construction constant. Treat broad claims such as “planars are more detailed” or “dynamics have more punch” as generalizations, not dependable buying rules.

What to compare when judging sound

  • Frequency response and tuning: Look for a sound profile you prefer, rather than assuming the driver type predicts it.
  • Bass extension and impact: These are related but distinct qualities; consider how low the headphone reaches and how its bass is presented.
  • Distortion and channel matching: Model-level measurements can help distinguish individual headphones more meaningfully than a planar-versus-dynamic label.
  • Listening context: Open-back designs leak sound and provide little isolation; closed-back designs are often more practical in public. Either driver type can be part of the wider design choice, and closed-back planars exist.

Are planar magnetic headphones heavier or less comfortable?

Some planar models are heavy, but neither weight nor comfort is consistent across the category. RTINGS lists these product examples: Audeze LCD 2 Classic at 580 g, HiFiMan Sundara 2020 at 394 g, and dynamic Sennheiser HD 660S2 at 260 g. These are model weights, not category averages; see RTINGS’ comparison.

HIFIMAN Edition XS Full-Size Over-Ear Open-Back Planar Magnetic Hi-Fi Headphones with Stealth Magnets Design, Adjustable Headband, Detachable Cable for Audiophiles, Home, Studio-Black
  • A Major Upgrade of the Popular Edition X: The new Edition XS expands on its predecessor’s achievements with several essential upgrades. Featuring Stealth Magnet Technology and the company’s NEO supernano Diaphragm, the Edition XS produces a wide, natural soundstage that puts the listener in the best seat in the house. Edition XS from HIFIMAN brings the depth and range of well-recorded music to an affordably priced headphone.
  • Acoustically Invisible Stealth Magnet: Unlike the sound waves created by a conventional magnet, the special shape of Stealth Magnets enables the waves to pass through the magnets without generating interference. HIFIMAN’s advanced magnet design is acoustically transparent, dramatically reducing wave diffraction turbulence that degrades the integrity of the sound waves. The reduced distortion yields pure sonic output that is accurate and full-range.
  • HIFIMAN’s NEO “supernano” Diaphragm (NsD): The new NsD is 75% thinner than previous designs, resulting in fast response and detailed imaging with lush, full range sonics.
  • The Headband: The light weight, ergonomically accurate offers maximum comfort for hours of listening pleasure. The exterior is refined matte black material, and the interior features high-grade memory foam for the most comfortable fit and elasticity. The headphone’s structural design supports overall durability that retains its comfortable fit for years of enjoyment.
  • The Cable: HIFIMAN’s new 3.5mm sockets are similar to those found on most common audio devices. The supplied 3.5mm cable is user changeable and replaceable.

Weight alone also does not settle comfort. Clamping force, pad shape, headband design, and fit affect how a headphone feels over time. FiiO says the FT5’s magnet placement and magnesium-aluminum construction are intended to address comfort considerations; that is the manufacturer’s description, not independent proof that it will fit every listener comfortably. Check the exact model’s construction and, where possible, try it on before buying.

Do planar magnetic headphones need a headphone amplifier?

No—not automatically. Whether a headphone reaches your desired listening level depends on its electrical specifications and the output capability of the device you connect it to. Sensitivity indicates sound pressure for a specified input; impedance describes opposition to supplied voltage. A headphone may work directly from a laptop or portable player, while another model—planar or dynamic—may benefit from a dedicated amplifier.

Audeze explains that sensitivity, amplifier output, and impedance all contribute to whether a headphone is driven adequately. Sennheiser gives 16–64 Ω as a typical range for small portable headphones and 150–300 Ω as typical for high-end or studio headphones, but cautions that these ranges are guides and advises checking the exact headphone and source. They are not universal compatibility rules: Audeze’s headphone amplification guidance and Sennheiser’s impedance guide.

Use model specifications, not the driver label

FiiO lists the FT5 at 36 Ω impedance and sensitivity of 110 dB/1 Vrms at 1 kHz, also given as 96 dB/mW at 1 kHz. The company says it can be driven by portable players. These are the manufacturer’s specifications for this model, published on its FT5 product page; they show why “planars need a powerful amp” is too broad a rule.

  1. Check the headphone’s sensitivity and impedance. Use the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact model.
  2. Check the source’s output capability. Look up the phone, computer, portable player, or amplifier’s headphone output specifications.
  3. Assess the actual result. If your source reaches your preferred listening level cleanly, a separate amp may not be needed. If output is insufficient, investigate the specific pairing rather than buying an amplifier just because the headphone is planar.

How to choose between the two

Start with the headphone you would actually wear and connect, not a category stereotype. Compare candidate models on their frequency response and preferred tuning, bass presentation, distortion and channel matching, weight and fit, open- or closed-back design, and sensitivity and impedance. Then consider whether your intended source can drive that specific model.

Dynamic headphones are common across many applications, and planar designs offer a different driver construction that can bring particular strengths. Neither type guarantees a sound signature, comfortable fit, low weight, or amplifier requirement. The better choice is the model whose sound, comfort, isolation, and source compatibility match your needs.
