Pixel’s “Limit to 80%” setting can enable bypass charging: once the phone reaches 80%, it stops charging the battery and uses power from the connected charger to run the handset. There is no separate bypass switch. Google introduced the charge-limit option in its December 5, 2024 Pixel Feature Drop, though availability can vary by phone and model.
What bypass charging means on a Pixel
With the 80% limit enabled, power first flows into the battery until it reaches 80%. If the phone remains plugged in, Google says the system then uses incoming power to operate the device rather than continuing to charge the battery. Android Authority reported Google’s explanation on December 12, 2024: “If you are still plugged in, the system will take input current to power the device.”
That behavior is bypass charging in practice, but Pixel does not offer a separate bypass-charging toggle. The phone must reach 80% first; keeping it connected after that lets it run from the external power source.
How to turn on Pixel’s 80% charge limit
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery, then Battery health.
- Tap Charging optimization and turn on charging optimization.
- Select Limit to 80%.
Google’s current instructions use these menu labels, but labels and availability can depend on the device and software version. To charge to 100% when you need more runtime, turn off the 80% limit.

What the limit does for battery health
Google describes the option as a way to prioritize long-term battery health. Limiting the usual charge target to 80% means the phone does not routinely charge the battery all the way to full. Google does not publish a guaranteed battery-longevity improvement or a specific temperature reduction for this feature, so the setting should not be treated as a quantified promise.
The limit is not absolute: Google says the Pixel fully charges at every 10th cycle to keep its battery-capacity readings accurate. That periodic full charge is expected behavior, not evidence that the setting has switched itself off.

Which Pixel phones support it?
Google introduced the 80% limit in the December 5, 2024 Pixel Feature Drop, but its announcement cautions that availability of some Pixel Drops may vary by phone and device model. The announcement does not establish a universal list of supported Pixel models. Check the Battery health and Charging optimization menus on your particular phone and confirm it is running software that offers the setting.

Google says Pixel phones charge with USB-C cables and names the Google 45W USB-C Power Charger as a compatible adapter. The relevant requirement for bypass charging is that the phone stays connected to an appropriate power source; reaching 80% with the limit enabled is what triggers the behavior, not a separate charger mode.
