Screen resolution tells you how many pixels a display has across and down; PPI tells you how tightly those pixels are packed into each inch. A higher PPI can make fine detail look sharper, but perceived sharpness also depends on screen size, viewing distance, and the viewer. Neither resolution nor PPI tells you everything about picture quality.
What resolution, pixels, and PPI mean
Pixels and resolution
A pixel is a small addressable picture element. Together, pixels form the text, images, and other content shown on a display. Resolution is the pixel grid’s width and height, written as horizontal pixels × vertical pixels. For example, 5120 × 2880 means 5,120 pixels across and 2,880 down; multiplying those figures gives about 14.7 million pixels.
Resolution describes the grid, not the screen’s physical dimensions. A 27-inch panel and a larger panel could use the same pixel dimensions, but the pixels would be packed more tightly on the smaller panel.
Pixels per inch
PPI means pixels per inch. It describes the linear density of pixels on the physical display. For screens with the same resolution, the smaller screen has the higher PPI. Android’s screen-density documentation explains that higher-density displays fit more pixels into each inch.

How to calculate a display’s PPI
For a rectangular screen, use its native pixel dimensions and physical diagonal measurement:
PPI ≈ √(W² + H²) ÷ D
- W is the horizontal pixel count.
- H is the vertical pixel count.
- D is the screen’s diagonal size in inches.
The formula uses the Pythagorean theorem to find the pixel grid’s diagonal, then divides by the panel’s physical diagonal. The result is approximate; use the manufacturer’s stated native resolution and diagonal, not a software-scaled desktop setting.

Example: a 27-inch 5K display
Apple lists its 27-inch Studio Display XDR at 5120 × 2880 pixels and 218 PPI in its technical overview. The pixel-grid diagonal is about 5,874 pixels; divided by 27 inches, that gives approximately 218 PPI. This calculation is derived from Apple’s specifications, not a separate measurement.
Does higher PPI make a screen sharper?
More pixels per inch can make individual pixels and jagged edges less apparent, and can allow finer detail to be represented. But PPI is not an absolute guarantee that a screen will look sharper to every person. How noticeable the pixel structure is depends in part on viewing distance and eyesight, as well as the display itself.

In a 2013 discussion of a specific 326-ppi phone display, Raymond M. Soneira of DisplayMate wrote that people with 20/20 vision could not resolve individual pixels when the display was viewed from 10.5 inches or farther. That is a bounded historical example, not a universal threshold for all screens or viewers. “Retina” is a branded description, not a scientific standard that guarantees pixel invisibility.
Compare resolution and PPI separately
Resolution and PPI answer different questions: resolution gives the size of the pixel grid, while PPI relates that grid to the panel’s physical size. These Apple specifications show how screens with different dimensions can have the same stated density:

The figures are manufacturer specifications, not independent image-quality test results. Apple’s Pro Display XDR technical overview lists its specifications.
The 32-inch display has more total pixels, while both manufacturers state the same PPI. That does not establish that the panels look identical: pixel count and density do not describe all aspects of image quality.

What resolution and PPI do not tell you
A display can have high resolution and PPI without necessarily having better color, brightness, contrast, reflection handling, viewing angles, or motion performance. Manufacturers list such properties separately from pixel dimensions and density. Apple’s display specifications, for example, include gamut, bit depth, viewing angle, reflectance, brightness, and refresh rate as distinct characteristics.
When choosing or comparing screens, start with resolution and PPI if fine detail matters, then consider the other attributes relevant to your work or viewing conditions. For motion-heavy use, refresh rate may matter; for color-sensitive work, gamut and bit depth may be more relevant. The specification that matters most depends on the task.
Why interface size does not equal pixel size
Operating systems use logical units so menus, text, and controls can remain usable across displays with different densities. These units are mapped to device pixels; they are not physical pixels themselves.
- Android: Layouts commonly use density-independent pixels (dp), while text uses scalable pixels (sp). Android’s density guidance recommends these units because a raw-pixel measurement can have different physical sizes on screens with different densities. Sp also respects the user’s text-size preference.
- Apple platforms: Interfaces use points, an abstract unit that can map to different numbers of device pixels depending on display resolution. Apple describes the concept in its UIKit scale documentation.
Points and dp serve related purposes, but they are separate platform implementations. Changing interface scaling can change how large elements appear without changing the display panel’s native pixel grid.
