Short answer: Pixel Face Unlock and iPhone Face ID both unlock phones, but they differ in documented capabilities and sensing approaches. Google says Face Unlock is available on Pixel 7 and later; app sign-in and purchase approval are documented for Pixel 8 and later. Apple’s Face ID uses TrueDepth depth and infrared data and supports Apple Pay authorization. Neither company’s published security claims provide a fair head-to-head verdict, so the right comparison depends on your Pixel generation, the task, and the conditions in which you use it.
Which phones support each feature, and what can they do?
Google’s current Pixel Face Unlock guidance lists Pixel 7 and later, including Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet. It documents app sign-in and purchase approval for Pixel 8 and later, including Fold. Those capabilities are generation-dependent; having Face Unlock for the lock screen does not by itself establish that every app or payment flow will accept it.
Apple says Face ID can unlock iPhone, authorize Apple Pay and purchases from Apple’s media stores, and authenticate in apps that support it. App developers choose whether to offer Face ID sign-in. Apple Pay availability also depends on factors such as country, bank, and merchant.
How do their facial recognition systems work?
iPhone Face ID
Apple describes Face ID as a TrueDepth-camera system. It projects and analyzes thousands of invisible dots to build a facial depth map, captures an infrared image, and uses the Secure Enclave-protected Neural Engine to convert that information into a mathematical representation for comparison. Setup involves two face scans. Apple says Face ID requires depth information and uses anti-spoofing neural networks.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Pixel Face Unlock
Google says enrollment captures images of your face from different angles to create a face model. Later face images can update the model, but Google says the enrollment images are not stored. The model is stored securely on the device. Google’s cited help page does not specify a projected-dot or equivalent depth-sensing method, so it is not possible to infer that Pixel uses Apple’s approach.
What do the companies say about security?
Apple’s September 18, 2026 support article reports a probability of less than 1 in 1,000,000 that a random person could unlock a device with one enrolled appearance, whether or not the owner is wearing a mask. This is Apple’s stated figure, not an independently verified result or a comparison with Pixel. Apple says the probability is higher for twins, siblings who look alike, and children under 13. After five failed Face ID matches, the passcode is required.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Google gives a direct caution rather than a comparable probability: “Face Unlock may be less secure than a strong PIN, pattern or password.” It also warns that a person who looks very similar to you, such as an identical sibling, may unlock the device, and that someone else could hold the device up to your face. There is no common benchmark in these statements from which to calculate which system is more secure.
Apple says Face ID checks that your eyes are open and uses attention awareness. Google offers a “Require attention on screen” setting. Both systems have passcode fallbacks, and biometric unlock should not be treated as a substitute for choosing a strong device passcode.

Do they work with masks, glasses, darkness, and different orientations?
Apple says Face ID is designed to work indoors, outdoors, and in total darkness, and with many glasses, hats, and scarves. Face ID with a mask requires an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 15.4 or later, according to Apple’s Face ID usage guidance. Mask use is portrait-only. The same guidance says iPhone 13 and later with iOS 16 or later supports Face ID in landscape; earlier iPhone models require portrait orientation.
Google warns that Pixel Face Unlock may have difficulty in insufficient light or when you wear a face covering or sunglasses. It recommends setting up fingerprint unlock as another way to unlock the phone. Google also suggests enrolling with your usual appearance and adjusting “Tap to check phone” or “Lift to check phone” if the phone activates unintentionally.

Can Pixel Face Unlock verify payments?
Do not assume every Pixel face-unlock method can authorize every payment. Google Wallet requires a screen lock and verification, and lists PIN, pattern, password, or Class 3 biometric unlock as accepted methods; it excludes Class 1 and Class 2 biometrics. Google specifically says Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro Face Unlock is not supported for tap-to-pay. That exception should not be generalized to every Pixel generation or transaction. Google separately documents app sign-in and purchase approval with Face Unlock on Pixel 8 and later. Check the specific payment flow and device behavior.
Apple documents Face ID for Apple Pay authorization, but that does not guarantee availability for every country, bank, or merchant.

How is facial data handled?
Both companies say biometric representations remain on the device. Google says face processing happens securely on-device and that the face model is not shared with Google services or apps. Apple says Face ID data does not leave the device and is unavailable to apps and Apple. These are the companies’ own descriptions of their systems.
What settings and fallback options should you consider?
- On Pixel: Use fingerprint unlock as a fallback if lighting, sunglasses, or coverings make face recognition unreliable. You can also configure “Require attention on screen” and “Always require confirmation.”
- On iPhone: Face ID requires the passcode in documented situations, including after a restart, a remote lock, or five failed matches. Apple provides Accessibility Options during enrollment for people who cannot move their head through the full range, and an accessibility setting to turn off Require Attention.
- For either phone: Attention-related controls change how authentication works. Choose settings that fit your needs and security preferences rather than assuming one setting is right for everyone.
Which one should you choose?
If you are comparing phones, first check the exact Pixel model and the task you care about. Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro have a documented tap-to-pay limitation for Face Unlock; Pixel 8 and later add documented app sign-in and purchase approval. Face ID has Apple Pay authorization and broader listed purchase and app-authentication uses, subject to app and regional availability.
If your decision depends on low-light use, masks, accessibility, or protection against impersonation, compare the documented conditions and settings rather than relying on a blanket “more secure” or “more reliable” claim. The available company statements use different forms of evidence, and they do not establish a shared performance ranking.
