Resolution tells you how many pixels form an image; refresh rate tells you how many times per second the display can update it. More pixels can show finer detail, while a higher refresh rate can make supported motion and scrolling look smoother. They describe different things, and neither specification by itself determines overall display quality.

What resolution means

Resolution is the number of pixels across and down a display image, usually written as width × height. Google’s Pixel 9 specifications list a resolution of 1080 × 2424 pixels. Google’s Pixel 9 regulatory guide defines resolution as the number of pixels used to display text and images; more pixels can mean more detail.

Resolution is not the whole sharpness story

The same pixel count can look different on screens of different sizes because those pixels are spread over a different area. Pixel density, measured in pixels per inch (PPI), helps put the resolution in context. Google lists the Pixel 9 at 422 PPI and a 20:9 aspect ratio, alongside its 1080 × 2424 resolution. Those are specifications for that model, not a general measure for all phones.

What refresh rate means

Refresh rate is how many times per second a display updates, measured in hertz (Hz). A 60 Hz screen can update up to 60 times per second; a 120 Hz screen can update up to 120 times per second. A higher rate can make supported scrolling, animation, and other motion appear smoother. It does not add pixels or, by itself, make a still image more detailed.

A listed maximum is not always the active rate

A phone’s stated refresh rate is a capability, not a promise that every app or video will run at that rate. Google’s Smooth Display support page says the feature can raise the rate “For some content” on supported Pixel models. The available range varies by model, and Google notes that the higher refresh behavior is not available for all apps or content.

How the two specifications differ in practice

What you are comparing Resolution Refresh rate
Measures Pixel count across and down the image Display updates per second, in Hz
Most relevant to How much image detail the display can render, considered with screen size and pixel density How smooth supported motion and scrolling can look
Typical notation Width × height, such as 1080 × 2424 A rate or range in Hz, such as 60–120 Hz
What the figure does not establish alone Overall picture quality or perceived sharpness in every use The rate every app or type of content will use, or a guaranteed perceptible improvement

The visible difference depends on the device, content, app support, and individual perception. The official specifications cited here do not quantify how much sharper or smoother people will perceive one screen to be compared with another.

What Pixel specifications show about model differences

Google’s current specifications illustrate why it is important to compare models rather than infer behavior from a single headline number:

  • Pixel 9: Google lists 1080 × 2424 resolution, 422 PPI, a 20:9 aspect ratio, and a 60–120 Hz Smooth Display range on its specifications page.
  • Pixel 10: Google lists a 60–120 Hz range in its Pixel 10 comparison.
  • Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold: Google lists a 1–120 Hz range for each in the same comparison.

These are maker-listed specifications for the named models, not rules for other phones or displays. A wider range indicates the stated capability; it does not mean that every app will use the full range at every moment.

Does a higher refresh rate affect battery life?

On supported Pixel phones, Google says Smooth Display increases battery usage, and that the feature is disabled when Battery Saver is on. The support page does not give a universal battery-life penalty, so the effect should not be expressed as a fixed number of minutes or percentage for every user or model. The setting is a trade-off: smoother motion when supported, with potentially greater battery use.

How to compare two displays

  1. For detail, compare resolution and screen size together. If available, use the manufacturer’s pixels-per-inch figure as additional context; a resolution number without size does not fully describe pixel density.
  2. For motion, check the refresh-rate range. Look for a range rather than only a maximum, and check whether the maker says the rate adapts to content.
  3. Check app and content support. A display’s maximum refresh rate may not be used by every app or media type.
  4. On phones, weigh the battery trade-off. Check the manufacturer’s guidance for the specific model and feature rather than assuming all high-refresh screens behave alike.
  5. Consider the rest of the display. Panel type and brightness also matter. Google describes Pixel phones as using OLED displays, but panel type alone does not establish overall display quality.

Which matters more: resolution or refresh rate?

It depends on what you care about. Resolution and pixel density are more relevant when you want to assess fine image detail; refresh rate is more relevant when evaluating motion and scrolling. For a useful comparison, consider both alongside screen size, content and app support, battery behavior, panel type, and brightness rather than treating either number as a standalone quality score.
