If your Pixel 9 Pro Fold will not turn on, will not charge, gets stuck transferring data, or has a blank or unresponsive screen, start with the least destructive checks: verify power and cables, retry missing transfers without resetting, install updates once setup is stable, then isolate screen or app problems. Save a factory reset or software reinstall for last; a reinstall erases the phone.
Use the section that matches what you see. If the phone is completely unresponsive, begin with power. If it boots, skip to data transfer, updates, or screen checks as needed.
What should I check first when Pixel 9 Pro Fold setup is stuck?
Start by deciding whether the phone is powered on. A blank display can mean a drained battery, a live phone with a display problem, or a phone that has not completed startup; the checks below help separate those possibilities without erasing data.
- Hold the Power button for 5–7 seconds. If the phone responds, continue setup or go to the section for the problem you see.
- If there is no response, connect a known-good charger, cable, and wall outlet. Leave the phone connected for up to 25 minutes. A completely drained Pixel may show no charging icon, vibration, or display response during that time.
- Remove the case and check the connection. Make sure the plug seats fully. Look for dust or lint in the USB-C port; do not force an object into it. Try another compatible cable and adapter, and confirm the outlet and charger work with another device.
- If the phone starts, keep it charged and connected to strong Wi-Fi. For a transfer, keep both phones unlocked and powered on. For an update, wait until the basic setup is stable.
- Do not reset just because a transfer was incomplete. Pixel 9 and later can retry a transfer after setup. A reset can erase data already on the new phone and is not the first recovery step.
Google’s charging guidance recommends a 30 W USB-C or PPS adapter rated for 30 W or more, or a USB Power Delivery adapter rated for 15 W or more; actual charging speed varies by Pixel model. Google identifies its 45 W USB-C Charger as a fast-charging accessory for the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, sold separately. For best charging performance, Google recommends a wired charging plug.

Why won’t my Pixel 9 Pro Fold turn on or charge?
Use a power source and cable you know work, then give a deeply drained battery time to respond. If charging checks do not help, reboot once and determine whether the phone itself is alive even if its screen remains blank.
Pixel 9 Pro Fold won’t turn on
- Connect the phone to a working wall outlet using a known-good compatible charger and cable. Reconnect both ends and leave it plugged in for up to 25 minutes.
- Remove the case during testing, especially if it presses against the plug or could affect wireless-charger alignment. Try a different outlet, adapter, and cable one at a time so you can identify a failed part.
- After charging, hold Power for 5–7 seconds. If there is still no response, hold Power for about 35 seconds to attempt a reboot.
- Wait about two minutes. Then call the phone from another device or use Find Hub to check whether it is reachable.
If it rings while the display stays blank, the phone may be running even though you cannot see the screen. That result does not by itself identify a particular hardware failure; it is a reason to contact an authorized repair center or Google support rather than repeat resets. If it does not ring and charging or reboot checks have failed, use Google’s support or repair path.
Pixel 9 Pro Fold won’t charge
First separate a bad outlet, adapter, cable, or connection from a phone-side problem. Verify the outlet, try a second compatible charger and cable, inspect the USB-C port for debris, and check that the cable is firmly connected at both ends. Remove the case while checking the connection.

How do I fix Pixel 9 Pro Fold data transfer stuck during setup?
Keep both phones unlocked, charged, and powered on, and use a strong connection. For Pixel 9 and later, Google supports pairing an Android or Pixel phone through a QR code, a cable, or both; a cable is a useful fallback when wireless pairing is unreliable.

If pairing does not start
- Unlock both phones and check that each has enough charge to stay on through setup.
- Confirm both devices have a strong Wi-Fi connection and current software where possible.
- Restart the old phone, install any available updates, and retry pairing.
- If wireless pairing does not get underway or keeps failing, try a cable transfer using a USB-C cable that supports data.
Not every USB-C cable transfers files. Some are charge-only, so the phone can appear to connect or charge while setup still says “Try another cable.” Unplug and reconnect both ends, inspect the ports for debris, and try a different data-capable cable. A charger’s power rating and a cable’s ability to transfer data are separate questions: a cable may be suitable for charging but not migration.
If the transfer stops halfway
A stopped transfer does not automatically mean you must erase the new phone. If the Pixel 9 Pro Fold has completed setup, open Settings and use the Back up or copy data or Android Switch flow to retry and retrieve missing categories. Google says Pixel 9 and later can add data after setup; the initial transfer is not the only opportunity.

Check whether either phone ran low on power, lost its connection, or ran out of storage. Charge both devices and retry over a stable connection; if wireless is unreliable, use a data-capable cable. A full destination can pause a transfer, so check available storage before repeating a large copy. Google also says only one previous device can be restored unless the Pixel is reset before selecting another source. If you need data from a different old device, do not reset casually: first make sure anything already on the Pixel is backed up or otherwise safe.
If setup finished but data didn’t copy
Use the post-setup copy flow instead of immediately starting over. Select the previous phone and retry the missing categories. This is especially useful when setup completed but a connection interruption prevented some content from arriving.
Some content may not transfer automatically, even when the main migration succeeds. Google lists downloads such as PDFs; photos or videos in hidden or locked folders; apps installed outside Google Play; data from apps that do not use Android backup; non-Google accounts and their data; contacts or calendars synced outside Google; ringtones; and some device settings. Treat those as separate recovery tasks: check the relevant app, account, folder, or original device rather than assuming a failed transfer should have copied them.

If your old phone is unavailable
Skip device-to-device transfer during setup, connect the Pixel to Wi-Fi, and sign in to the Google Account that holds your backup. Restore from the available cloud backup. What returns depends on what was backed up and which apps and accounts support restoration; cloud restore cannot recover data that was never included in a backup.
WhatsApp and Google Messages after migration
WhatsApp needs a backup on the old phone and a restore flow on the new phone; a general phone transfer alone does not guarantee that its chat history will be restored. Before giving up on Google Messages, allow time for indexing: Google says it can take up to 24 hours for Messages to fully index after transfer. That delay does not necessarily mean the messages were lost.
When should I update the Pixel 9 Pro Fold during setup?
Update after basic setup is stable, rather than troubleshooting an interrupted transfer and an update at the same time. Before installing, connect to Wi-Fi and charge the phone to at least 75%.
- Open Settings > System > Software updates.
- Follow the prompts to download and install an available update. Keep the phone connected to Wi-Fi and sufficiently charged while it works.
- Allow the phone to restart if prompted. Google says downloaded Pixel updates become active after the next restart.
- After the update, give Android time to finish configuring and optimizing the software before judging battery life or repeating setup steps.
Battery drain can temporarily increase while an update is downloaded, optimized, and configured. If an update does not finish, Google says the phone may retry automatically over the following days. A storage shortage can also block installation, so check available space if the update repeatedly cannot complete. Do not interrupt an update simply because the phone seems slower or uses more battery for a short period.
Why is the inner screen not responding or the cover screen blank?
First rule out things that can interfere with touch or sensors, then check software and settings. Google’s published touch guidance is general Pixel/Fold guidance, not a Pixel 9 Pro Fold-specific bulletin identifying a particular inner-screen or hinge defect.

- Remove the case and screen protector temporarily. Also remove gloves or stickers that cover the display or sensors.
- Clean the screen and check whether touch works in more than one app or screen.
- Install available system updates once the phone is stable and sufficiently charged.
- Check touch diagnostics or touch-sensitivity settings available in the software version installed on the phone.
- Test in safe mode. If the problem disappears there, a downloaded app may be responsible; uninstall recently added apps one at a time and check again.
If the cover screen is blank, also use the power checks: call the phone or use Find Hub after attempting a reboot. A ringing phone with a blank display points toward support or repair, but it does not prove which component has failed. Avoid assuming a screen, hinge, or folding mechanism is defective based on one symptom alone.
Why won’t the screen rotate?
Confirm auto-rotate is enabled, remove anything covering the screen or sensors, and test whether the issue persists in safe mode. If rotation works in safe mode, a recently downloaded app may be interfering.
- Check the phone’s auto-rotate setting and enable it if needed.
- Remove the case or screen protector temporarily, clear stickers from sensor areas, and clean the screen.
- Restart the phone and install available system updates if setup is complete.
- Use safe mode to see whether rotation changes. If it works there, uninstall recently downloaded apps and retest after each removal.
If rotation still fails after these checks, document when it happens and contact Google support or an authorized repair center for device-specific guidance. The available Google guidance covers general Pixel/Fold troubleshooting; it does not establish a Pixel 9 Pro Fold-specific rotation defect.

A factory reset can remove data already on the Pixel and may complicate recovery if the old phone is unavailable or if you need to restore from a different source. Google’s Pixel repair tool warns that reinstalling software resets the device and erases all data. If you are considering a reinstall, back up what you can first and read the tool’s current instructions before proceeding. Do not treat reinstalling as a repair for a persistent charging or blank-screen symptom; those warrant support or repair assessment.

When should I contact Google support or an authorized repair center?
Escalate when basic power and reboot checks fail, the phone is reachable but its display remains blank, charging does not work with known-good equipment, or a screen problem persists after simple interference and software checks. Repeated resets are unlikely to clarify a hardware symptom and can put data at risk.
Before contacting support, note what happens when you hold Power, how long the phone was connected to a charger, whether it rings, which cables or adapters you tried, and whether the issue affects the inner screen, cover screen, or both. Check warranty status through Google’s support process, but do not assume a particular repair, replacement, or warranty outcome; eligibility depends on the device and circumstances.
Bottom line: Give power problems time and test known-good charging equipment; use a data-capable cable when migration fails; recover missing data after setup before resetting; update only when the phone is stable; and hand off persistent blank-screen, no-charge, or hardware symptoms to support or repair.
