If Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced left you wanting more, choose your next game by the part you miss most: Windrose for building a pirate life, Sea of Thieves for a shared-world crew adventure, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii for a finished solo story, or Skull and Bones for ship-focused combat. None is a direct replacement for the Jackdaw’s mix of a seamless Caribbean, an authored campaign, and naval upgrades. Resynced is a remake of the 2013 game, released on 9 July 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S; it is a separate purchase from the original.

These are different kinds of follow-up, not interchangeable versions of Black Flag. If you want another authored Assassin’s Creed naval campaign, Rogue is the closest in-family choice; if you want a crew-management RPG, Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire heads in a very different direction.
What should I play after Black Flag Resynced?
Start with the activity you want to repeat, rather than with the pirate setting. The games that share Black Flag’s ships do not necessarily share its open-world structure, its story focus, or its solo play.

- Sail with friends: choose Sea of Thieves for a living shared world where the crew’s coordination matters more than ship upgrades.
- Play a character-led solo adventure: choose Pirate Yakuza for Goro Majima, comic spectacle and arcade naval combat, but not a seamless Caribbean.
- Make the ship the main attraction: choose Skull and Bones for build-focused naval warfare, or Rogue if you want another Assassin’s Creed story and sailing loop.
- Read, role-play and manage a crew: choose Deadfire for a fantasy archipelago and isometric RPG structure.
The distinction matters because Black Flag combines several loops that other games separate. Its mostly seamless Caribbean, authored story, on-foot exploration, ship upgrades and broadside combat form one package. A game can be excellent at one of those things and still feel unlike Black Flag overall.

Is Windrose the closest game to a pirate life?
Windrose is the broadest answer if what you want is to make a pirate life rather than follow an assassin’s campaign. It combines survival, land and sea combat, boarding, crafting, base-building and exploration, but it is an Early Access PC game—not a finished Black Flag sequel.
What is in Early Access?
Kraken Express released Windrose in Early Access on 14 April 2026. The Steam listing describes a PvE survival adventure in the Age of Piracy, playable solo or with friends. Its current Early Access content includes three biomes, about 30 procedurally generated islands, more than 90 hand-crafted points of interest, three playable ships, naval combat with boarding, building, crafting, Tortuga, factions and NPC workers.
The developer estimates the main story at around 50–70 hours in the current version. That is a developer estimate, not a measured playtime guarantee; the amount of optional exploration and survival play will affect an individual run. Kraken Express says it believes it will take 1.5 to 2.5 years to reach full release, and plans to increase the game’s price at 1.0. Both are plans, not fixed dates or a promise that the schedule cannot change.
Does it work solo or in co-op?
Windrose supports single-player and online co-op, with parties of up to eight using self-hosted or dedicated servers. Kraken Express recommends parties of up to four for late-game performance, so the maximum lobby size should not be mistaken for its recommended group size. The Steam listing marks it as Steam Deck Playable and says it has full controller support.
Its English-language Steam reviews were Very Positive: 88% of 28,937 reviews were positive, according to Valve/Steam in 2026. Recent reviews were Mostly Positive, with 75% of 612 reviews from the last 30 days positive in the same 2026 listing. Those are changing storefront snapshots, not a forecast of how the game will develop.
Who should wait?
The minimum PC specification is demanding: Windows 10 64-bit, an Intel Core i7-8700K or AMD Ryzen 7 2700X, 16 GB RAM, a GTX 1080 Ti or RX 6800, and 30 GB of storage, according to Kraken Express via Steam in 2026. Check your hardware against that list before buying. If you want a stable, complete story today, or play on a console, Windrose is not the safe choice; its Early Access status and PC-only availability are central to the decision.

Is Sea of Thieves good after Black Flag?
Sea of Thieves is the strongest pick for shared-world pirate adventures, especially with friends. It replaces Black Flag’s authored solo journey and personal ship progression with a crew-run toybox: sailing, treasure hunts, sea battles, encounters and the unpredictable decisions of other players.

What does sailing with a crew involve?
The crew has to operate the ship together: someone handles the helm, others adjust sails, and teammates take positions for cannon fire or defend against boarders. That shared work is the attraction if you want to tell stories with friends; it can feel like busywork if you want a solo adventure. PCGamesN has described the game as less compelling in single-player, while specialist coverage including GameRant and ToyScout emphasizes the value of playing with a group.
Unlike the Jackdaw, ships in Sea of Thieves do not gain combat upgrades such as stronger cannons or hulls. Customization is cosmetic, according to Lee D’Amato’s ScreenRant comparison published on 20 February 2025. That keeps encounters focused on player skill and crew coordination instead of a long upgrade ladder. It is a meaningful difference for anyone whose favorite part of Black Flag was improving the ship over a campaign.
What is the 2026 Edition?
The Steam storefront calls its current package Sea of Thieves: 2026 Edition. Eneba described the edition as a package of eight years of live-service content and dated its launch to 8 April 2026; Steam’s app listing retains 3 June 2020 as its release date, reflecting the original Steam launch rather than the edition date. Rare and Xbox Game Studios continue to run the game as a seasonal service, with seasons arriving every three months and 50 Renown levels per season.
Valve/Steam listed the 2026 Edition at $39.99 in 2026, with Deluxe at $49.99 and Premium at $59.99. Those are volatile storefront prices, so confirm the current price and edition contents in your region before purchase. The Steam version requires an Xbox Live account and lists online co-op, online PvP and cross-platform multiplayer; it also requires 100 GB of storage. GameTyrant has reported availability through Game Pass, but availability can vary by date and region.

Is Pirate Yakuza like Black Flag?
Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is a finished solo pirate adventure with a memorable lead and naval battles, but it is not a seamless open-world sailing game. Goro Majima wakes with amnesia, becomes captain of the Goromaru, hunts treasure and recruits a crew in a deliberately theatrical story.
Released on 21 February 2025 by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and Sega, it is available on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. OpenCritic’s 2025 figures, reported via ScreenRant, give it a Top Critic Average of 81/100, with 84% of critics recommending it. TheGamer estimated the main story at around 15 hours in 2025; completionist play can take longer.
How open is its world?
ScreenRant’s Lee D’Amato describes a handful of separate maps that unlock in order, with fast travel between them and landing limited to designated spots. Treasure hunting follows structured dungeon-raid paths rather than free island wandering. That is a major change from Black Flag’s mostly seamless ocean, where you can point the ship toward a distant shore and sail there.

On land, Majima can switch between Mad Dog and Sea Dog fighting styles; ship customization and named crew roles give the crew a different kind of progression from Black Flag’s crew-count model. The game also adds the hidden pirate island Madlantis, with a casino and coliseum, and supernatural encounters including ghostly sharks. If those heightened, modern-Hawaii-and-wooden-ships contrasts sound appealing, it is an unusual but complete chaser; if realistic ship handling or Golden Age history is the point, look elsewhere.
Should I play Skull and Bones or Assassin’s Creed Rogue?
These two games are the clearest “more sailing” answers, but they satisfy different appetites: Skull and Bones centers ship combat and builds, while Assassin’s Creed Rogue is the in-family choice for another historical Assassin’s Creed story.
Skull and Bones: choose the ship, not the assassin
Ubisoft’s Indian Ocean naval game launched in 2024 after a long development. It has no equivalent to Black Flag’s city exploration, assassin storyline or expansive narrative drive; the boat is the star. Its naval warfare is built around ship loadouts and progression, making it more appropriate if fitting out a vessel and fighting at sea matter more than leaving the deck to explore.

In 2026, its third year brought large ships such as the Galleon and Junk, seasonal bosses and deeper builds, according to VGTimes. It is an online live-service game, so seasons, progression systems and purchase options can change; check the current edition details before buying. PCGamesN reported a six-hour trial, while ToyScout noted heavy discounting in August 2026. Trial offers and discounts are time-sensitive and may not be available in every region or storefront.

Assassin’s Creed Rogue: choose another AC naval campaign
Rogue is the natural next step if you finished Black Flag and want more sailing in the same series. Released in 2014 for last-generation consoles, it came to PC in 2015 and was remastered in 2018; the Switch’s The Rebel Collection bundles it with Black Flag. Its protagonist, Shay Patrick Cormac, sails during the Seven Years’ War in the North Atlantic, where ice changes navigation and the Morrigan brings new tools such as a Puckle gun and burning oil.
Rogue also turns the threat around: enemy ships can board you. It is not a new 2026 sequel, but a compact way to revisit the Assassin’s Creed naval formula with a colder setting and a different central conflict.
Which pirate game has the best writing and crew management?
Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire is the best fit if you want pirate fiction through an isometric role-playing game rather than an action adventure. Obsidian’s RPG, released 8 May 2018, sends a party across the fantasy Deadfire Archipelago, where ship travel and crew management sit alongside dialogue, quests and tactical combat.
You recruit companions, keep the crew fed and happy, and can resolve ship encounters through ship-to-ship combat or by boarding into turn-based combat. The role-playing lets you act as a virtuous Watcher or attack every ship you encounter. It is a substantial shift in pace and perspective from Black Flag, but a strong choice for players who want writing, party decisions and a fantasy setting. Eneba estimated an average playtime of around 40 hours in 2026.

What classic pirate games are still worth playing?
Older games can offer a different kind of freedom than a modern action sandbox. Sid Meier’s Pirates! is the most direct classic recommendation; Caribbean Legend is for players willing to tolerate rough edges in exchange for a sprawling pirate-life simulation.

Sid Meier’s Pirates!: the free-form Caribbean
Firaxis released its 2004 remake of the 1987 original on 22 November 2004. It lets you sail, duel, dance, trade and search for treasure in a free-form Caribbean sandbox. Its visuals have aged, but its mix of activities remains a useful alternative if you want an open-ended pirate career rather than a tightly authored campaign.
Caribbean Legend: freedom with jank
BlackMark Studio’s Caribbean Legend arrived on 15 February 2024 as a modern descendant of Sea Dogs and Age of Pirates. GameRant characterizes it as an enjoyable but janky pirate-life sim with dated graphics and considerable freedom. ScreenRant cited 200 hours of plundering and RPG potential in 2026; that is ScreenRant’s characterization, not a guaranteed completion time. Pick it for a rough-edged role-playing sandbox, not for the polish of a new blockbuster.
Which pirate-themed games are not really Black Flag successors?
These games may be excellent in their own lanes, but their core loop differs from sailing through an open world and fighting with a pirate ship. Consider them if their specific genre is what you want.
- Return to Monkey Island: a comedy and puzzle-adventure pirate story, not an open-world action game. PCGamesN ranked it first in a list updated 2 January 2026, before Windrose and Resynced launched, so that ordering is not a current comparison of the new releases.
- Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew: undead-pirate tactical stealth built around single-player crew abilities, rather than ship-to-ship action.
- Salt 2: Shores of Gold: island-hopping PvE exploration. It reached version 1.0 in November 2025, but has no naval combat and its developers do not plan to add it.
- Corsair Cove: a pirate city-builder, released for PC on 31 July 2026. ToyScout reported a 79 Metascore, an 82 OpenCritic Top Critic Average with 83% recommending, and 85% positive from 2,735 Steam reviews in August 2026; these scores and review totals can change.
- One Piece Odyssey: a turn-based JRPG starring the Straw Hats, with story involvement from Eiichiro Oda and a Dramatic Scene combat system, rather than a Black Flag-style sailing game.
- LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game: an all-ages, local co-op adaptation of the first four films. It is better suited to family play than to a modern open-world follow-up.
- Republic of Pirates, Tortuga: A Pirate’s Tale and SteamWorld Heist II: management or tactics-oriented alternatives, not direct Black Flag-style adventures.
How do I choose the right follow-up?
Decide whether you want a story, a social sandbox, a ship-combat game or a role-playing system before you buy. Setting and pirate imagery are not enough to predict whether the moment-to-moment play will suit you.
- Authored story or toybox: Pirate Yakuza, Rogue and Deadfire have structured campaigns; Sea of Thieves and Windrose give more room to create your own sessions and goals.
- Seamless ocean or separate maps: Windrose and Sea of Thieves support broad exploration, while Pirate Yakuza uses separate, progressively unlocked maps and designated landing areas.
- Naval combat style: Black Flag’s broadsides and ship upgrades are not universal. Sea of Thieves rewards crew coordination with cosmetic-only ship customization; Skull and Bones emphasizes builds; Pirate Yakuza goes arcade.
- Historical or fantastical setting: Rogue and Sid Meier’s Pirates! lean toward historical Golden Age piracy; Deadfire is fantasy, and Pirate Yakuza deliberately mixes modern Hawaii with wooden ships.
- Solo or crew play: for a fully solo survival game, consider Windrose; for a game designed around friends aboard a ship, consider Sea of Thieves. Do not buy the first expecting the second’s social chaos, or the second expecting a long assassin campaign.
- Finished game or ongoing development: Pirate Yakuza and Deadfire are shipped campaigns. Windrose remains Early Access, while Sea of Thieves and Skull and Bones are seasonal services.
There is no single replacement for Black Flag. For a new pirate-life sandbox, Windrose is the widest fit if its Early Access and PC requirements suit you. For a more established shared-world adventure, take a crew into Sea of Thieves; for another Assassin’s Creed naval story, pick Rogue.
