For privacy, Google Voice has the clearer advantage in its published disclosures: Google says Voice content is not used for advertising and that texts and attachments are encrypted in transit to Google and at rest. Pinger says ad-supported TextFree may analyze keywords from outbound messages for ad targeting. Neither statement establishes end-to-end encryption, and neither is an independent security audit. The best fit also depends on whether you want TextFree’s free, ad-supported second-number service or Google Voice’s cross-device syncing and calling options.
How do Pinger and Google Voice handle your data?
Both services process information to operate calling and messaging. Their policies describe different categories and purposes, so they should not be treated as a directly comparable inventory of every data point.
Pinger TextFree
Pinger says TextFree is free and ad-supported. For the ad-supported app, it may use data about users, devices, and app use to tailor ads. Its policy also says it may analyze keywords from outbound message content to place users in audience segments, while stating the extracted keywords do not include identifying information about message participants. This is Pinger’s description of its practices, not independent verification. Pinger privacy policy
Pinger lists call and text times, durations, and phone numbers as a category retained for two years. It separately says contacts associated with an account are retained while the account is open. The two-year period applies to the listed call/text records; it should not be generalized to all message content or account data. Pinger also says it may retain specific information longer to respond to law-enforcement and government needs, and may disclose information to communications back-end providers, service providers, and advertising companies for stated purposes. Google Voice
Google says Voice stores and processes call history—including numbers, dates, times, and durations—as well as voicemail, SMS, greetings, recorded conversations, and other account information needed to provide the service. Google says it processes content for functions such as spam filtering and collects performance and crash data for reliability and troubleshooting. It also explicitly says Google Voice content is not used for advertising. Google Voice privacy help Google’s description of Voice data
Which service has stronger encryption?
Google specifically says Voice texts and attachments are encrypted in transit between a Google Voice client and Google, and encrypted at rest in Google’s data centers. Those protections do not mean messages are end-to-end encrypted: the cited description does not say that only the sender and recipient can read them. The reviewed disclosures likewise do not establish end-to-end encryption for TextFree. Google Voice privacy help

- Carrier: This phone is locked to Tracfone, which means this device can only be used on the Tracfone wireless network. Tracfone plan required, activating is easy, just 3 steps.

Accordingly, choose based on the privacy practices each company actually documents—not on the assumption that either service is a private, end-to-end encrypted messaging app. Encryption in transit and at rest are useful safeguards, but they do not answer every question about provider access, processing, or retention.
What happens when you delete data?
Google says users can delete Voice call history, voicemail, SMS, and recorded conversations. Deletion does not necessarily mean every copy disappears immediately: some information may remain temporarily on active servers for billing or other business purposes, and residual copies may remain in backups. Google also says anonymized copies of call-record information are retained for reporting and auditing. Google’s description of Voice data

Pinger’s stated two-year retention period covers call/text timing, duration, and phone-number records, not all TextFree content. Its policy also describes contacts retained while an account is open. These are different disclosures with different scopes; they do not support a simple claim that one service deletes everything sooner. Pinger privacy policy

Availability, device support, account eligibility, emergency-calling treatment, and number-porting rules can vary by account type and geography. The cited sources do not establish a complete current comparison for those areas, so check the official terms for your location before relying on a particular feature. Workspace customers should also distinguish Google’s separate business privacy disclosure from consumer Voice terms; it notes, for example, that number porting involves exchanging details such as a name, address, and phone number with the losing carrier. Which service should you choose?
- Choose Google Voice if Google’s stated no-advertising use of Voice content, disclosed encryption in transit and at rest, and syncing across devices align with what you need.
- Consider TextFree if you want a free, ad-supported service and accept Pinger’s stated use of app data and outbound-message keywords for ad targeting. Its web version’s calling limitations may matter if you expect to place or receive calls from a computer.
- Choose neither on the assumption of end-to-end encryption. The reviewed disclosures do not establish it for either service.
These are policy and feature disclosures, not the results of a security audit or hands-on product test. For a business or a specific country, check the applicable account terms and availability before deciding.
