“TTL expired in transit” means a gateway discarded your IPv4 packet after its time-to-live (TTL) reached zero. It is not a successful ping reply from the destination. On Windows, use tracert <destination> to inspect the route and gather evidence about where the packet is expiring. The message alone does not prove that a routing loop is responsible.

What “TTL expired in transit” means

IPv4 packets carry a TTL value that is reduced as they pass through gateways. If a gateway finds the value at zero, it discards the packet and may send an ICMP Time Exceeded notification to the sender. The classic IPv4 specification describes this behavior in RFC 792.

The notification is ICMP Type 11, Code 0: “time to live exceeded in transit.” Code 1 is different; it means the time limit for fragment reassembly expired. Windows also distinguishes these conditions: Microsoft documents IP_TTL_EXPIRED_TRANSIT as status 11013 and IP_TTL_EXPIRED_REASSEM as status 11014 in its ICMP_ECHO_REPLY32 reference.

Because the message reports an intermediate packet-handling condition, it does not show that the destination answered your ping. A successful destination response is an ICMP Echo Reply.

Why it happens—and what the error does not tell you

  • A routing loop is possible. If gateways keep forwarding a packet among themselves, its TTL can run out before it reaches the destination.
  • The path may be longer than the packet’s remaining TTL allows.
  • The TTL may have been set unusually low.

The message establishes that the observed packet’s TTL expired, but does not identify which explanation applies or which device is at fault. ICMP notifications also are not guaranteed to arrive. During route tracing, a hop that does not respond is not by itself proof that the router is down or broken.

How to troubleshoot the error on Windows

  1. Record the destination and reproduce the ping. Note the responding address and time. If the response comes from an intermediate router with a TTL-expired message, do not count it as a reply from the destination.
  2. Trace the route: open Command Prompt and run tracert <destination>, replacing the placeholder with the host name or IP address you pinged. For example, use tracert example.com when testing that host. Microsoft documents the command and its behavior in the Windows tracert reference.
  3. Inspect where the trace stops and whether hop addresses repeat. A stop or repeated hops can help locate where to investigate, but treat the pattern as evidence rather than conclusive proof because ICMP responses may be absent.
  4. Compare, if possible. Trace a known-good destination or run the same test from another network. A comparison can narrow the scope, but does not by itself establish the root cause.
  5. Share the trace with the right network operator. If evidence points to your local network, ask its administrator to inspect the relevant routing configuration. If the problem appears beyond that network, provide the trace to your ISP or other network operator.

What to do before changing a route

There is no universal route-edit command for this error. A safe route change depends on the network topology and the specific path evidence; changing routes without that information can create or worsen connectivity problems. Gather the ping output and route trace first, then have the responsible administrator or provider investigate the suspected segment.
