Use ping to test whether a host answers ICMP echo probes, but do not treat a failed ping as proof that a website is down. To test the website itself, make an HTTP request with curl to the URL and check its response code. These tools test different layers, so interpreting them together is more useful than relying on either alone.
What ping tests—and what it does not
ping sends ICMP echo requests and listens for echo replies. A reply indicates that the target or a responding network endpoint answered that probe; it does not confirm that the website application loaded, that a particular page exists, or that the expected content is being served. The Linux iputils manual describes the request-and-reply behavior and support for IPv4 and IPv6: ping(8) — Linux manual page.
A website check therefore needs an HTTP request to the relevant URL. A server can respond to ping while its web service or page is broken. Conversely, network policy can block or deprioritize ICMP while HTTP traffic works.
How to ping a website or server
Linux
Open a terminal and run:
ping -c 4 example.comOn Linux iputils, -c 4 sends four packets and then exits. Replace example.com with the hostname or IP address you want to check. To test IPv6 explicitly, use ping -6 -c 4 example.com where IPv6 is available. Options and output can vary across operating systems and ping implementations.

macOS
In Terminal, run:
ping -c 4 example.comOn macOS, -c also limits the number of requests. You can omit it to keep ping running, then stop it with Control-C. If an option behaves differently on your system, consult the local man ping page.
Windows
In Command Prompt or PowerShell, run:
ping -n 4 example.comWindows uses -n to set the number of echo requests. Do not assume that Linux-specific flags such as -c work on Windows.
Read the output
Replies commonly include the responding address, elapsed time, and a TTL value. The time is the round-trip time for those ICMP probes along the path between your device and the responder; it is not a measure of page rendering time or a complete estimate of a visitor’s website experience. Packet loss or slow replies describe the observed probe path and interval, not necessarily every user’s connection.
On Linux iputils, a script can use ping’s exit status: 0 means the command’s success condition was met, 1 means no reply packets arrived or the requested count was not met by a deadline, and 2 indicates another error. Do not assume every platform uses identical exit-status rules.
How to check whether the website responds over HTTP
Try a headers-only request
Use curl’s HEAD request to ask for response headers without downloading the page body:

curl -I https://example.com/Inspect the HTTP status line in the output. A response confirms that the server or an intermediary returned an HTTP response for that request. HEAD can be denied or handled differently by some servers even when GET works, so a failed HEAD test is not conclusive. The curl manual documents its request options: curl man page.
Use GET when HEAD is denied or unsuitable
This GET request discards the response body while printing the HTTP response code:
curl -sS -o /dev/null -w '%{response_code}n' https://example.com/On Windows Command Prompt, /dev/null is not the usual null device; use NUL instead:

It may complete successfully while reporting a status such as 404. Add --fail when you want HTTP status codes of 400 or greater treated as errors:
curl --fail -sS -o /dev/null -w '%{response_code}n' https://example.com/Use the printed response code when diagnosing the endpoint. A 2xx-only rule is not appropriate for every URL: redirects, authentication requirements, and an endpoint’s intended behavior may change what status is expected. curl documents the distinction and the --fail behavior at curl FAQ.

Interpret ping and HTTP results together

Keep the scope of the conclusion aligned with the test: a single command is evidence from one location, using one method at one time. It cannot establish that the service is unavailable to everyone.
When ping times out but the website works
ICMP and HTTP are distinct traffic types. A network or server may filter ICMP, prioritize it differently, or decline to answer echo requests while continuing to accept web requests. If curl returns the expected response for the URL, a ping timeout alone is not evidence that the website is down.

For a more informative check, test the exact HTTPS URL visitors need, including its path if relevant. Confirm the returned status and whether redirects, login, or content expectations are part of the endpoint’s normal behavior. If users still report problems, compare from another network and investigate the application and page behavior rather than relying on ICMP alone.
One-time checks versus ongoing monitoring
Ping and curl are useful for an immediate troubleshooting check. If you need recurring tests, external probe locations, alerts, or a public status page, use a monitoring service configured for the layer you care about. Compare check type (HTTP, TCP, or ICMP), probe geography, interval, timeout and retry behavior, alert channels, status-page support, and plan limits.
Provider feature pages describe their own offerings, not independent performance results. For example, Uptimehub’s ICMP monitoring page describes recurring ICMP and TCP checks, six regions, alerts, and status pages, and notes that HTTP or TCP checks can be more informative for public-facing services when ICMP is filtered. Uptime.com describes a vendor-specific configuration of five packets per check and selectable intervals from one minute to one hour, with alerts under its stated packet-loss or response-time conditions: Uptime.com ICMP monitoring. Those are service-specific settings, not universal monitoring thresholds.

“Could not resolve host” or a name-resolution error
The hostname did not resolve for that request. Check for a typo, test the intended hostname, and compare with a request to a known-good domain. If the hostname should resolve, investigate DNS from the affected network; ping’s failure alone cannot distinguish a DNS problem from other causes.
Ping reports a timeout, but curl returns a response
The HTTP service is reachable from that test while ICMP replies are absent or delayed. Use the HTTP response to assess the web endpoint, and do not infer downtime from ping alone.
Ping replies, but curl cannot connect
The ping responder answered ICMP, but that does not establish that the web port, TLS connection, URL, or application is working. Check the URL scheme and host, then inspect curl’s error and response. Try GET if a HEAD request was denied.

curl normally treats a completed transfer separately from the HTTP status code. Read the reported response code and decide whether it is expected for that URL. Use --fail if an HTTP status of 400 or higher should make the command fail; retain -w '%{response_code}n' if you also need the numeric status in output.

curl fails only when using -I
The server may not allow or correctly handle HEAD. Repeat with the GET command that discards the response body and prints the code. A HEAD failure by itself does not prove GET is unavailable.
The command never stops
Some ping implementations continue until interrupted. Use the platform-supported packet-count option, such as Linux/macOS -c or Windows -n, or stop an ongoing command with Control-C where supported.
Results differ across networks
That difference can reflect probe location, DNS answers, routing, filtering, or network-specific access. Repeat with the same URL and method from another network or an external monitoring location, and compare the actual HTTP response as well as ICMP output.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does ping use TCP or HTTP?
Neither. Ping uses ICMP echo requests and replies; curl’s HTTP request tests a different protocol and service layer.
Can I use a website’s IP address instead of its domain in ping?
Yes, ping accepts a hostname or IP address. An IP probe bypasses hostname resolution for that command, but it still does not test whether a website URL serves the expected page.
Does a fast ping mean the website is fast?
No. Ping measures round-trip time for ICMP probes to a responder; it does not measure page rendering, application work, or the full visitor experience.
