Choose based on where your agents run and whose authority they need. PingOne documents first-class OAuth agent identities and delegated, downscoped tokens for user-approved actions. Google Cloud documents SPIFFE-based Agent Identity for supported Google runtimes, IAM access to cloud resources, and an auth manager for credentials used with external tools. They address overlapping problems through different platform-centered designs; neither is a universal winner.

This comparison reflects vendor product and implementation documentation available on October 4, 2026—not a hands-on test or independent security assessment. Product availability, supported runtimes, configuration, and entitlements can vary, so confirm them for your deployment.

How the approaches differ

Question Ping Identity Google Cloud
What identifies the agent? In PingOne, an agent can be registered as a first-class OAuth 2.0 identity and managed through its lifecycle. Agent Identity is a SPIFFE-based cryptographic identity associated with the resource hosting the agent.
How can it access native resources? Ping describes OAuth/OIDC authentication and access configuration for agents and resources. Grant IAM roles to the agent’s principal for Google Cloud resources.
How can it act for a user? OAuth token exchange uses the user’s token as the subject and the agent’s credentials as the actor; Ping can issue a downscoped token after evaluating consent, identity, and requested scopes. Agent Identity can act for an end user, and the auth manager supports user OAuth flows, including consent, authorization-code exchange, and refresh. The exact flow depends on the runtime and target service.
How are external-tool credentials handled? Ping describes resource and scope mapping, gateway enforcement, and MCP protections. The auth manager can store and broker API keys, OAuth client secrets, and user tokens, including for tool and MCP requests.
What deployment model is documented? Ping materials describe agent identity and gateway patterns, including integrations with external AI platforms and MCP servers. Confirm support for the specific environment. Agent Identity is documented for Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform Runtime (Agent Runtime), Gemini Enterprise, and Cloud Run. Check the current supported-runtime and feature matrix.

What Ping Identity’s agent model provides

Agent identity lifecycle in PingOne

PingOne treats AI agents as non-human identities that administrators can onboard, enable, update, and disable. Administrators can manage ownership, authentication, and access to resources. Ping’s documentation says these AI agent capabilities require the Agent IAM Core solution package; verify that entitlement and the available features in your organization’s environment.

Delegation without handing over the user’s credentials

Ping’s documented pattern is token exchange, not impersonation. The agent presents the user’s access token as the subject token and its own client credentials as the actor token. PingOne evaluates the agent identity, user consent, and requested scopes, then can issue a downscoped token. In the described flow, the agent does not receive the user’s credentials.

Ping says the resulting token can identify the acting agent through an act claim, but that claim is not included by default: an administrator must configure it through attribute mapping. Downstream services need to preserve and interpret the claim if it is to support attribution.

Access controls and approval patterns

Ping describes short-lived delegation tokens, audience restrictions, and resource and scope mappings for APIs and MCP servers. For high-risk actions, its materials also describe pausing a request for real-time human approval, including through CIBA. These are documented capabilities and implementation patterns, not assurances that a particular policy is enabled by default.

Ping’s management material lists OAuth/OIDC grant types including Authorization Code, Client Credentials, CIBA, Device Authorization, Refresh Token, and Token Exchange. It also describes optional PingFederate integration for workforce MFA through a PingID adapter. Which options are available depends on the product package, environment, and configuration.

Keep Ping products distinct

PingOne Advanced Identity Cloud has a separate agent identity and privilege API path. Its API documentation describes feature-enablement requirements, token-exchange prerequisites, and scopes for lifecycle and privilege operations. Do not assume its API model is interchangeable with PingOne’s console and package model.

Ping’s Identity for AI solution guide also describes PingGateway filters for protecting MCP endpoints, validating requests, and recording audit trails, plus reference integrations with external AI platforms and MCP servers. Those examples establish integration patterns; they do not show that every integration is turnkey or included in every license. Ping’s release notes record Identity for AI general availability on March 31, 2026; that date applies to the release note and should not be taken as the launch date of every related feature.

What Google Cloud’s native identity and agent tools provide

Agent Identity for supported runtimes

Google describes Agent Identity as a strongly attested, SPIFFE-based cryptographic identity associated with the resource hosting an agent. It can authenticate to MCP servers, cloud resources, endpoints, and other agents, either on its own behalf or on behalf of an end user. Google’s overview names Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform Runtime (Agent Runtime), Gemini Enterprise, and Cloud Run as supporting services. Confirm the current runtime and feature matrix before designing around a specific deployment.

IAM access to Google Cloud resources

For Google Cloud resources, the agent identity itself can receive access through IAM principal identifiers. Google’s Agent Engine guide documents setting identity_type=AGENT_IDENTITY for a deployment and assigning appropriate roles to the resulting agent principal. This is a direct IAM route for resources the agent should use; the assigned roles determine its access.

External-service credentials and MCP

Google’s Agent Identity auth manager addresses a different requirement: credentials for outbound calls to services outside the agent’s Google Cloud IAM access. It acts as a centralized credential vault and authentication broker. Google documents storing API keys, OAuth client secrets, and user tokens; managing OAuth consent, authorization-code exchange, and refresh; and integrating with the Agent Development Kit to inject authentication headers into tool and MCP requests.

Google’s MCP guidance distinguishes user, workload, and agent identities. If a client uses a person’s identity, requests inherit that person’s permissions and are attributed to them. For production, Google recommends a separate agent or workload identity when appropriate so access can be limited and requests can be viewed in logs. Service accounts and workload identity federation remain relevant alternatives, depending on the runtime and target service.

For Cloud Run, Google documents using agent identity credentials to reach Google Cloud APIs and the auth manager for external services and more involved OAuth or API-key flows. The distinction matters: the agent principal’s Google Cloud access and the credentials needed for third-party services are separate parts of the design.

How to choose for your deployment

  1. Start with the hosting environment. Check whether the agent runs on a Google service that supports Agent Identity, on another cloud, or on-premises. Google’s native identity is tied to supported Google-hosted services. Ping’s materials show gateway and external-platform integration patterns, but confirm support for your exact architecture with the vendor.
  2. Decide whose authority each action needs. Use an agent’s own service authority for tasks that do not require a user’s permissions. For user-delegated actions, compare how each integration handles consent, requested scopes, token lifetime, and revocation. Ping documents a subject-and-actor token-exchange flow; Google documents user OAuth support through its auth manager.
  3. Map permissions to the resource. Compare Ping’s scope and audience restrictions for APIs with Google IAM roles on agent principals. Check whether the controls are sufficiently granular for the APIs, cloud resources, and MCP tools involved.
  4. Trace every external credential. Identify where API keys, OAuth secrets, and user tokens are stored; who can administer or rotate them; and how outbound requests receive credentials. Google documents the auth manager as a broker for these credentials. Ping describes OAuth, gateway, and MCP protection patterns.
  5. Test attribution and approval requirements. Determine what identity and actor details appear in downstream logs, and whether high-risk actions must pause for approval. For Ping, the documented act claim requires configuration. Google’s cited materials explain identity and logging guidance but do not establish a directly equivalent human-approval workflow.
  6. Verify availability and commercial terms. Confirm the applicable Ping package, Google runtime, region, tenant eligibility, and contract terms. The reviewed documentation does not establish comparable prices or a total-cost model, so request current quotes rather than inferring a cost winner.

Security and evidence limits

Both vendors document ways to give agents identifiable principals and constrain access, but these materials are not comparative security findings. They do not establish that one platform is safer, faster, or less expensive in a particular deployment. Outcomes depend on identity configuration, permission scope, credential handling, runtime support, logging, and operational controls. Evaluate those details against your own threat model and requirements.
