There is no universally best method. PiFM and AFM-IR can provide nanoscale infrared-related chemical contrast for semiconductor contaminants and interfaces; Raman microscopy measures Raman-scattered light and can add complementary molecular information. Choose by the chemical signal you need, the specimen’s response and geometry, the defect’s scale, and the practical workflow—not by a single resolution figure.
What signal does each method measure?
| Method | Measured signal | What it can tell you | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| PiFM / PiF-IR | Light-induced forces detected at an atomic force microscope (AFM) tip. In infrared implementations, the illumination wavelength can be used to form chemical maps or spectra. | Nanoscale IR-related chemical contrast alongside AFM topography. Supplier materials describe semiconductor-wafer contamination and chemical identification of surface defects and residues as applications. | Reported spatial capabilities are manufacturer claims, not guaranteed performance for every instrument configuration or specimen. |
| AFM-IR | Infrared absorption causes local thermal expansion in the sample; the resulting mechanical response is detected by the AFM probe. | Local IR spectra and maps that can help distinguish contaminant chemistry or examine variations across a material interface. Bruker says its spectra correlate with bulk FTIR spectra and can be interpreted with established IR libraries. | Signal and usable spatial detail depend on the sample and measurement configuration. Bulk-library compatibility does not mean every nanoscale spectrum will match a reference unambiguously. |
| Raman microscopy | Raman-scattered light. | Molecular information from Raman spectra; it is an established complementary method in failure-analysis workflows. | Autofluorescence can reduce sensitivity, and laser illumination can damage some darker samples. These are specimen- and condition-dependent risks, not universal failures of Raman. |
PiFM and AFM-IR are both AFM-based approaches with IR-related chemical contrast, but their detected signals are not interchangeable: PiFM detects light-induced force, while AFM-IR detects the sample’s mechanical response to IR absorption. Raman uses a different optical signal, so whether it answers the question depends on the material and the spectral information sought.
Where have these methods been applied in semiconductor analysis?
Contaminants and residues
Bruker identifies semiconductor materials, low-k dielectrics and organic nanocontaminants among AFM-IR application areas. Its described workflow uses AFM topography to locate a contaminant, followed by IR mapping and point spectra to investigate its chemistry. The workflow can also use KLARF coordinates to navigate to known contamination sites; that is a specific targeting capability, not a guarantee of detection or identification.
In a Bruker 2025 application-note example, an AFM-IR measurement characterized a polymer contaminant approximately 35 nm in diameter and 2 nm high. This is a demonstrated specimen and result, not a general minimum detectable size. Molecular Vista and ST Instruments also describe PiFM use for semiconductor-wafer contamination, surface defects and residues. Those are supplier-described applications rather than independent head-to-head validation.

Dielectric and interface variation
A Bruker 2025 AFM-IR example maps absorption across a Si/SiO2 interface. The application note reports peak positions shifting from 1125 to 1134 cm−1 and interprets the variation as consistent with a change in crystallinity or structure near a step edge. Treat these peak positions and interpretation as results from that example, not as a general threshold for identifying an interface defect.
Complementary measurements
Raman and IR microscopy are used in failure-analysis contexts that include foreign materials, device degradation, raw-material impurity qualification and formulation errors. Photothermal Spectroscopy Corp. describes co-located, simultaneous O-PTIR and Raman acquisition as a way to collect complementary spectra from the same region. O-PTIR is a separate technique—not another name for AFM-IR or PiFM—and the example supports complementary analysis as a workflow concept rather than proving one method’s superiority.

How should you choose for a particular specimen?
- Define the chemical question. Decide whether the useful contrast is IR absorption and functional-group information, Raman scattering, or a different near-field response. A method’s nanoscale capability is not useful if its signal does not answer the materials question.
- Set the spatial requirement. Compare the target’s dimensions with the capabilities of the specific instrument and configuration. Bruker’s 2025 application note reports AFM-IR spatial resolution below 10 nm; its general failure-analysis page reports spectra at resolution down to 10 nm. Molecular Vista reports sub-5 nm IR spatial resolution for its Vista 75 PiFM product. These are manufacturer-stated figures, not independent, directly comparable detection limits or guarantees for a given sample.
- Check whether the specimen is measurable in the required mode. Reflectivity, thickness, surface roughness, thermal response and measurement geometry can affect suitability. The signal and depth sensitivity differ among methods; s-SNOM and AFM-IR, for example, access different properties.
- Assess fluorescence and illumination risk. For Raman, test whether autofluorescence obscures the signal and whether the required laser conditions could damage the specimen. The risk depends on the sample and excitation conditions.
- Plan targeting and interpretation. If a defect has known coordinates, determine whether the instrument workflow supports navigation to that site; Bruker describes KLARF navigation for selected sites. For AFM-IR, consider whether FTIR-library comparison is appropriate for interpreting the spectrum. Arrange a complementary measurement when one signal alone cannot resolve the material question.
What should not be confused with these methods?
s-SNOM is a related nanoscale IR technique, not a synonym for Raman, PiFM or AFM-IR. It detects infrared light scattered by the AFM probe, whereas AFM-IR detects the sample’s mechanical response to illumination. Because the methods access different properties, their results should not be treated as equivalent chemical measurements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is one method better overall?
The documented examples establish plausible semiconductor-analysis uses for PiFM and AFM-IR and a complementary role for Raman, but they do not establish a controlled, independent three-way comparison across the same specimens and failure modes. A defensible choice therefore needs a defined sample, defect scale, desired chemical information and operating constraints. Where those are not known, compare candidate measurements on a representative specimen rather than treating vendor resolution claims or application examples as a universal ranking.
