Picoboy is a 2021 maker project that pairs a Raspberry Pi Pico with a Wii Remote for game input. Its parts list also includes a 128 × 64 graphic OLED, a buzzer, three LEDs, and an Arduino Micro. The project’s sample code reads joystick direction and C/Z button states, but the published material available here does not establish every wiring detail or the Arduino Micro’s role.

What is Picoboy?

Rahul Khanna’s 2021 Hackster.io project describes an effort to port the Arduboy to the Raspberry Pi platform and add Wii Remote control. The core idea is to use the remote’s controls as input for a small game system built around a Raspberry Pi Pico.

What components does the project list?

  • Raspberry Pi Pico
  • Wii Remote
  • 128 × 64 graphic OLED
  • Buzzer
  • Three LEDs
  • Arduino Micro

The project page does not identify exact retail models for these parts. Before buying a display, check its dimensions and electrical compatibility against the original project documentation.

How does the Raspberry Pi Pico use a Wii Remote?

The project provides separate code sections for the Wii Remote, Raspberry Pi, and a Ping-Pong game. In the Wii Remote excerpt, the code imports nunchuck, creates a nunchuck() object, and repeatedly reads its joystick method. The Raspberry Pi excerpt reads joystick X and Y values and C/Z button presses, then maps those inputs to output pins.

Raspberry Pi Pico
  • RP2040 microcontroller chip designed by Raspberry Pi in the United Kingdom
  • Dual-core Arm Cortex M0+ processor, flexible clock running up to 133 MHz
  • 264KB of SRAM, and 2MB of on-board Flash memory
  • Castellated module allows soldering direct to carrier boards
  • 26 × multi-function GPIO pins

These excerpts show the intended input flow, but they are not enough to safely infer a complete circuit or reproduce pin assignments. Consult the project’s own code and schematics before wiring components.

What is unclear before you build it?

  • Complete wiring: The page has schematic sections, but the available documentation does not provide enough detail to reconstruct the full circuit or confidently assign every listed board a role.
  • Arduino Micro’s purpose: Although it appears in the parts list, its role is not explained by the available project excerpt.
  • Exact component variants: The list names a 128 × 64 graphic OLED but does not establish a specific display model or its interface and voltage requirements.

Use the original project’s schematics and code as the authority for those build decisions rather than guessing from the parts list.

Does the original build use a Pico W or Bluetooth bridge?

The 2021 Hackster.io project identifies a Raspberry Pi Pico. A later article from Position is Everything, published in 2026, discusses a Pico W or a separate Bluetooth-capable host as possible connection approaches, but that description is not corroborated by the original project page. Treat it as a later proposal, not as a verified part of Khanna’s original design. A separate Raspberry Pi example shows Wii Remotes used in maker projects, but it is contextual rather than documentation of Picoboy’s hardware (Raspberry Pi).
