Physint is not a new Metal Gear Solid game. It is Kojima Productions’ original action-espionage IP, and Hideo Kojima says he wants it to offer new ideas and a different kind of spy action. The announced film-and-game ambition and espionage premise invite comparison with Metal Gear, but no public gameplay demonstration establishes how Physint’s stealth, combat, missions, or player choices will work.
Is Physint a new Metal Gear Solid?
No. Kojima Productions announced Physint in January 2024 as a brand-new action-espionage game developed with Sony. Kojima later described it as a new intellectual property and explained that he chose espionage after fans repeatedly asked him to make another Metal Gear. That makes the comparison understandable, but Physint has not been announced as part of Metal Gear: there is no confirmed shared continuity, characters, or story connection. Kojima’s comments, transcribed by Gematsu, include his explanation: “I still want to do new things, but I decided to make an action espionage game.”
Where Physint could differ from Metal Gear
A new IP rather than an established series
Metal Gear is a long-running series published by Konami; Physint is Kojima Productions’ new original property. Konami reported that the Metal Gear series had sold more than 60 million copies in its 2025 corporate report. That figure reflects the established franchise, not a forecast for Physint. A different approach to spy action
Kojima has been explicit about wanting a distinction in the genre. In comments from the Koji10 podcast reported by GamesRadar+ in October 2026, he said: “It’s about spies, but I want plenty of new ideas and a different kind of spy action. It’s quite different.” The statement signals creative intent; it does not reveal a particular mechanic or prove how the finished game will differ in play.

A stated film-and-game ambition
Kojima Productions’ 2024 announcement described Physint as both an interactive game and a movie in its look, story, theme, cast, acting, fashion, and sound. Kojima said he hoped the project could transcend barriers between film and video games. This is an aspiration for the overall presentation, not confirmation of a specific cinematic format, structure, or balance between cutscenes and player-controlled action. What is known about Physint now?
- Genre: Kojima Productions announced it as an action-espionage game.
- Publishing partner: In September 2026, Kojima Productions announced Xbox as Physint’s new publishing partner. The earlier Sony partnership announcement should not be treated as the current partner status. The Xbox announcement does not itself specify consumer platforms. Kojima Productions

What has not been confirmed?
The announcements and comments described above do not establish Physint’s specific stealth systems, combat, mission structure, player freedom, plot, setting, release date, or consumer platform list. Kojima’s “different kind of spy action” is not a substitute for a gameplay reveal. A reported poster phrase, “The next Cold War begins,” does not by itself confirm a Cold War setting or plot. Those details remain open until Kojima Productions provides them.

How should Metal Gear fans think about the comparison?
For now, compare the projects on what is actually known: Metal Gear is an established Konami series, while Physint is a new Kojima Productions IP; both occupy the espionage space, but Kojima says he wants a different approach for Physint; and Physint has an announced film-game presentation ambition. Beyond those points, claims that it will play like a particular Metal Gear installment—or replace one—would go beyond the available information.
For a currently released point of comparison, Konami describes Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater as a remake that retains the original story and game design while updating its presentation.
