Choose physical if you want a removable game card, a boxed item to keep, or a straightforward way to hand a game to someone else. Choose digital if you want to download games, switch between installed titles without changing cards, and leave your collection on the console. On Switch 2, check the package carefully: a Game-Key Card is physical packaging, but it does not contain the full game.
Physical or digital: which suits your library?
| What matters most | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Collecting boxes or lending a game directly | Physical | You can hand over the game card, though only one person can use that card at a time. |
| Switching games without swapping cards | Digital | Installed games are available from the console menu, subject to Nintendo’s account and console access rules. |
| Choosing based on price | Compare the exact listing | Price depends on the title, country, store and date; neither format is always cheaper. |
| Playing without downloading the main game | A full-data physical game card | Some Switch 2 boxed releases are Game-Key Cards and require a download, so confirm what the package contains. |
| Keeping saves separate from game media | Either | Nintendo says save data is associated with the account and console, not the game card. |
What “physical” means on Switch 2
Full-data game cards
A packaged game may come on a game card containing its game data. That can reduce the initial download needed to start playing, but it does not guarantee that no download, update or game-specific online requirement will apply.

Game-Key Cards
A Game-Key Card is a physical card that stores an activation key rather than the full game. Nintendo stated in its 2025 shareholder Q&A that the card “does not contain the full game data for the game itself; instead, it stores a key to activate the software.” You need to download the game, so plan for an internet connection and enough available storage. Nintendo’s digital game purchase FAQ describes the requirements for downloads; on Switch 2, storage can be internal or a compatible microSD Express card. Storage requirements vary by title.
Check the specific box or store listing before buying if you want the game data on the card, need to install it without a download, or are managing limited storage. “Physical” alone does not tell you which kind of card a Switch 2 release uses.

How digital game access and sharing work
Virtual Game Cards on up to two consoles
Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card guide treats eligible eShop purchases as Virtual Game Cards that can be loaded or ejected between consoles. A Nintendo Account can have up to two consoles that load its Virtual Game Cards. Once a card is loaded on a console, any user on that console can play the title.
Online licensing on another console
Nintendo also allows digital games to be played on consoles that cannot load the Virtual Game Card, using an online license. That console must be connected to the internet, and other users on it cannot play the game under that access method. The two methods have different constraints; do not assume one purchase automatically lets two people play the same game on separate consoles at once. See Nintendo’s multi-console instructions for the current setup.

Lending to family-group members
Digital lending is available through Virtual Game Cards, but it is not unrestricted sharing. Nintendo limits lending to eligible members of a Nintendo Account family group. Play Nintendo describes a lending period of 14 days unless the borrower returns the card earlier. Check the current eligibility and card rules before relying on this for household access.
Price: compare the exact game and region
Nintendo says Switch 2 games offer the same experience in packaged and digital formats, while the costs of producing and distributing each format differ. Its Switch 2 pricing guidance also says retail partners set their own prices and title pricing may vary.

Beginning in May 2026, starting with preorders for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, Nintendo-published digital games exclusive to Switch 2 have a different MSRP from their physical versions. That policy does not establish that digital is always cheaper: retailer prices, eShop sales, country and purchase date can change the comparison. Check the current listing for the exact title before deciding.

The game card is not where your save is kept. Nintendo’s multi-console guidance says save data is associated with the account and console rather than the card. You may be able to move saves using save-data transfer or Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud Backup, but cloud backup applies only to supported games and requires an active membership. Nintendo’s digital game purchase guidance likewise notes that supported saves from physical and digital games can use the cloud feature. Check support for the particular game; format alone does not determine whether cloud saves are available.

Make the choice for the games you actually buy
- Check the release format. For a boxed Switch 2 game, verify whether it is a full-data game card or a Game-Key Card.
- Compare the current price. Look at the exact title, edition, country and store; prices can differ between physical and digital and can change over time.
- Think through who will play it. Physical cards can be handed to another person, one at a time. Digital access follows Virtual Game Card, online-license and family-group lending rules.
- Check storage and connection needs. Downloads and Game-Key Card games need adequate storage and an internet connection for download; title-specific requirements can differ.
- Check save support separately. If moving saves or using cloud backup matters, confirm that the game supports the feature and meet any membership requirement.
