Yes—Photoshop Elements can open camera RAW files through Adobe Camera Raw, provided Adobe supports your exact camera model. In the Elements Editor, choose File > Open, select the RAW file, make adjustments in Camera Raw, then click Open Image to work on a processed copy. Elements does not overwrite the original RAW file.
The key compatibility check is the camera model, not just the filename extension. A file ending in .NEF, .CR2, .ARW, .RAF, .ORF, .RW2, or .DNG is not automatically supported by every version of Elements.
What does it mean for Photoshop Elements to open a RAW file?
A camera RAW file contains image data captured by a camera before it has been rendered into a finished image. Photoshop Elements opens supported camera RAW files in Adobe Camera Raw first. Camera Raw provides controls for preparing the image, and Open Image then sends a processed version into the Elements Editor for further work.

That distinction matters when checking compatibility. Adobe lists RAW filename extensions as import formats, but separately says Elements opens RAW files only from supported cameras. The extension tells you what type of file you have; the camera model determines whether the installed Camera Raw support can interpret it.
In practical terms, opening a RAW file is a two-stage process: Camera Raw handles the camera data and initial adjustments, then Elements receives a rendered copy for further editing. Choosing Open Image is the handoff point; it does not turn the original camera file into a finished image or replace it. Keep the original if you may want to revisit the RAW workflow later.
How do I open a RAW file in Photoshop Elements?
Use the Elements Editor’s File > Open command. For supported cameras, the file opens in Adobe Camera Raw before it enters the main editing workspace.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open the Edit workspace. Work in the Photoshop Elements Editor, rather than relying on a filename association or another application to open the file.
- Choose
File > Open. Browse to the camera RAW file. You can select one or more RAW files and clickOpen. - Make initial adjustments in Camera Raw. Depending on the image, use controls such as white balance, exposure, brightness, contrast, saturation, shadows, highlights, and sharpness. These are adjustments to prepare the image; they do not overwrite the original RAW file.
- Click
Open Image. Camera Raw processes the image and sends a copy into the Elements Editor, where you can continue editing. - Save the result in an Elements-supported format. Keep the camera RAW original if you want to preserve the source data separately from the processed edit.
If Camera Raw does not appear and the file fails to open, do not assume that the extension is unsupported. First check for an Elements or Camera Raw update, then confirm that Adobe lists the exact camera model as supported.
For a batch of photos, the documented Open dialog lets you select one or more RAW files. This can save time when importing a group, but it does not bypass compatibility: each file still has to come from a camera supported by the installed Camera Raw version. If the files come from different camera models, check each model rather than assuming one successful file confirms support for the whole group.
Which RAW formats and cameras does Photoshop Elements support?
Elements can import many common RAW extensions, including .CR2, .NEF, .ARW, .RAF, .ORF, .RW2, and .DNG. Adobe’s broader supported-extension list includes other RAW types as well. That list is useful for identifying likely RAW files, but it is not a promise that every camera using one of those extensions will work.

Adobe’s official guidance is that Photoshop Elements can open raw files only from supported cameras. Check Adobe’s supported-camera index for the exact camera model and the Camera Raw version required. The index, updated October 16, 2026, covers Camera Raw plug-in versions 1.0 through 18.7 and explicitly includes Photoshop Elements among the supported Adobe applications.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Compatibility therefore has two parts: the camera must appear in Adobe’s support information, and the Camera Raw version installed with your Elements release must be new enough to include that camera. A format-extension list alone cannot answer either question reliably. A camera maker may use an extension shared with other models, so even a familiar suffix does not tell you whether a particular camera is covered.
When checking, use the complete model designation—for example, the release notes identify the Sony A7 V as ILCE-7M5. Searching only for a brand or a broad camera family can leave you unsure whether the exact model is supported. If the model is absent from the list, treat the file as unsupported in that plug-in version until Adobe’s compatibility information says otherwise.
Why won’t Photoshop Elements open my camera’s RAW files?
The most useful first checks are whether Elements and its Camera Raw plug-in are up to date and whether Adobe supports the exact camera model. Newer cameras may not be supported immediately, so a file can remain unrecognized until a compatible Camera Raw update is available.
- Check the installed plug-in version. On Windows, Adobe documents
Help > About plug-in > Camera Raw. On macOS, the path isAdobe Photoshop Elements 2026 Editor > About plug-in > Camera Raw. - Check for the Elements Camera Raw update. Adobe’s Photoshop Elements release notes list Camera Raw 18.2.2 for Photoshop Elements 2026, dated April 23, 2026. Adobe says this update added support for the Sony A7 V (
ILCE-7M5); it is installed throughHelp > Install Camera Raw. - Compare the camera against Adobe’s supported-camera index. Use the exact model name, not just the manufacturer or file extension. If it is a recently released camera, check again after updating because support may arrive in a later plug-in release.
- Consider DNG conversion if the camera-specific format is too new for an older application. Adobe describes DNG Converter as a backward-compatibility route. This is an option to try, not a guarantee that every camera and Elements version will work.
Do not assume that the newest Camera Raw version shown in Adobe’s general compatibility index is installed in your Elements build. The Elements release notes and the version displayed in the plug-in information are more useful for establishing what your installation actually has.
Also distinguish an update to the general Camera Raw product from an update available for your specific Elements release. Adobe’s index covers plug-in versions through 18.7, while the Elements 2026 release notes record Camera Raw 18.2.2 on April 23, 2026. These are different records and do not mean every Elements user has version 18.7. Check what your own installation reports, then compare that version with the camera’s entry in Adobe’s compatibility information.

Should I convert a camera RAW file to DNG?
DNG is a possible compatibility workaround when an older Elements or Camera Raw version does not recognize a camera-specific RAW format. Adobe includes DNG among its Camera Raw import formats and describes DNG Converter as a backward-compatibility option.
Conversion is not a universal fix. It cannot be presented as a guarantee for every camera, Elements edition, or plug-in version, so check Adobe’s camera support information and update path first. If you try conversion, retain the original camera RAW file until you have confirmed that the resulting DNG opens and behaves as needed in your version of Elements.
DNG also has a separate role in the editing workflow: Adobe says Camera Raw adjustments can be saved to DNG. That does not mean that converting a file automatically adds camera support in every installation; compatibility still depends on the specific application and file.

In other words, do not convert simply because the file has a RAW extension. First establish whether the camera is listed and whether your plug-in is current. If an older application still cannot read the camera-specific file, DNG Converter is a reasonable compatibility route to test. Keep the original alongside the converted file until the DNG has opened successfully and you are satisfied with the result.
What Camera Raw features are missing from Elements?
Photoshop Elements includes a Camera Raw workflow, but it does not expose every Camera Raw feature available in full Photoshop. Adobe lists these capabilities as missing or reduced in Elements:
- Color Sampler
- Targeted Adjustment
- Spot Removal
- Adjustment Brush
- Graduated Filter
- Tone Curve
- HSL/Grayscale
- Lens Corrections
- Presets
- Snapshots
That limitation is about feature breadth, not whether Elements can open RAW files at all. If you are choosing an editing workflow, compare the controls you need, the support status for your camera, the update path for your installed version, and whether a non-destructive original-file workflow meets your needs.

For a straightforward workflow—opening a supported RAW, making the available initial adjustments, and continuing in Elements—the included Camera Raw path may be enough. If a particular missing or reduced control, such as the Adjustment Brush, Tone Curve, or Lens Corrections, is essential to your process, compare the feature set in full Photoshop before deciding which application to use. Camera support alone does not tell you whether the adjustment tools fit your needs.
There is no need to treat Elements’ reduced feature set as a file-opening problem. The app can still open RAW files from supported cameras; the distinction is what you can adjust in Camera Raw before sending the processed copy into Elements.
How should I check compatibility before relying on Elements?
Confirm both camera support and the plug-in version before planning a batch edit or moving a whole workflow to Elements. These checks are especially important for newer cameras, because the camera may postdate the Camera Raw version included with an existing Elements installation.
- Find the camera’s exact model designation in its documentation or on the camera body.
- Look up that model in Adobe’s supported-camera index and note the Camera Raw version associated with support.
- In Elements, view the installed Camera Raw version using the operating-system-specific About plug-in path.
- If Elements needs an update, use
Help > Install Camera Rawwhere available, and consult the Elements release notes for the relevant version. - Open a representative RAW file with
File > Openand confirm that Camera Raw appears and thatOpen Imagesends the processed copy into Elements.
Adobe’s published version information illustrates why checking the installed release matters: Photoshop Elements 2026 received Camera Raw 18.2.2 on April 23, 2026, with support added for the Sony A7 V (ILCE-7M5). The broader Adobe compatibility index was updated October 16, 2026 and spans plug-in versions through 18.7. Those dates describe different published records; they do not establish that every Elements installation includes the latest version in the general index.
Before relying on a new setup for a large library, test a representative file from the camera you actually use. Confirm that the file opens, that Camera Raw presents its adjustment window, and that Open Image delivers a copy into the Editor. This small test checks the full path—camera support, installed plug-in, and handoff to Elements—rather than just whether a file has a familiar extension.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I open several RAW photos in Photoshop Elements at once?
Adobe’s documented workflow allows you to select one or more camera RAW files from the Open dialog. Each file still depends on support for its camera model in the installed Camera Raw version.

Will editing a RAW photo in Elements change the file on my memory card?
Adobe says Elements does not save changes to the original RAW file. It sends a processed copy into the Editor. Keep a separate copy of the source file as part of your normal file-management practice, especially before deleting or reformatting a card.
Where can I find the Camera Raw version used by Elements on a Mac?
Adobe documents the path as Adobe Photoshop Elements 2026 Editor > About plug-in > Camera Raw. The Windows path differs: Help > About plug-in > Camera Raw.
Does Photoshop Elements support my camera?
Check Adobe’s supported-camera index using the exact camera model, then compare the required Camera Raw version with the plug-in installed in your Elements release. Support for a filename extension alone does not confirm model compatibility.

What RAW formats does Photoshop Elements support?
Adobe lists formats including .CR2, .NEF, .ARW, .RAF, .ORF, .RW2, and .DNG, among others. The exact camera model and installed Camera Raw version still determine whether a particular file opens.
Do I need to convert RAW files to DNG for Photoshop Elements?
Usually, check camera support and update Camera Raw first. Adobe describes DNG Converter as a backward-compatibility option for older applications, but conversion is not guaranteed to work for every camera and Elements version. Keep the original until you have tested the DNG.
Why does my new camera’s RAW file fail to open?
A newer camera may not yet be supported by the Camera Raw version in your Elements installation. Check for the latest available Elements and Camera Raw updates, verify the installed plug-in version, and look up the camera’s exact model in Adobe’s supported-camera index.
Is Camera Raw in Elements the same as Camera Raw in full Photoshop?
No. Elements supports a RAW workflow but has missing or reduced features, including tools such as Adjustment Brush, Tone Curve, Lens Corrections, Presets, and Snapshots. Compare the specific controls you need before choosing an application.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Photoshop Elements can open camera RAW files through Adobe Camera Raw when Adobe supports the exact camera and the installed plug-in version is current enough. Use File > Open, adjust the image, then choose Open Image to work on a processed copy; the original RAW remains unchanged. If a file fails, check updates and the camera support list first. DNG conversion may help with older applications, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
