Start with your phone’s Battery screen before changing settings or replacing the battery. Compare today’s usage with recent days, then look for apps, background activity, notifications, system tasks, or weak cellular coverage that could explain the drain. The exact menus vary by phone model and software version.
1. Check what used the battery
Open Settings > Battery and review the usage for the current day alongside recent days. Look for an unusual change, then identify which apps or system activities account for it. A high-use app is a useful clue, not proof that the app is faulty: long screen-on sessions, background work, and poor reception can all contribute.
On iPhone
In Settings > Battery, review App and System Activity Usage. Apple’s battery screen can show time spent on screen and in the background, notifications that wake the phone, and activity associated with cellular coverage or a low signal. Directions, music playback, photo syncing, and mail fetching are examples of background activity.
To inspect a particular day, go to Settings > Battery > View All Battery Usage, select the day, and review app and system activity. If one app stands out, adjust how you use it or change the relevant background or notification settings rather than turning everything off.

On iOS 18 or later, Battery Insights may indicate that an ongoing update or device setup is temporarily affecting battery life. Apple says the iOS 26 Daily Usage chart and Adaptive Power require iOS 26 or later; Adaptive Power is available only on listed newer devices, so it may not appear on every iPhone. On Android
Open Settings > Battery and review battery usage. Android’s menu names and controls vary by manufacturer and device; consult the phone maker’s instructions if the path differs. Google’s Android battery guidance covers general ways to extend runtime.

On Google Pixel
Pixel users can open Settings > Battery > Battery usage, switch to app view, select an app, and review or change its background use. Google recommends leaving an app’s battery setting at Optimized in general. For a guided check, try Settings > Battery > Battery diagnostics > Battery draining too quickly. Menu availability can vary by software version; see Google Pixel Help’s battery-drain instructions.
2. Match the drain to what the phone was doing
Usage patterns can explain a sudden drop even when no single app looks unusually active. Check whether the period of fast drain coincides with any of these:

- High screen brightness or long screen-on sessions, including video, gaming, camera use, or navigation.
- Hotspot or tethering, GPS/location use, streaming, or long mobile calls—especially while moving between areas.
- Weak cellular coverage. A phone working with a low signal may use more power; try Wi-Fi instead of mobile data where practical.
- Heat. Google Android Help notes: “Your battery drains much faster when it’s hot, even when not in use.” The guidance appears in Get the most life from your Android device’s battery, accessed October 7, 2026.
3. Try low-risk settings changes
Make one relevant adjustment at a time, then check the Battery screen again to see whether usage changes. Avoid restricting every app without evidence: doing so can delay notifications or background tasks without addressing the cause.
- Reduce screen brightness, shorten the screen timeout, or enable adaptive brightness.
- On Android, use Adaptive Battery where available. On Pixel, consider restricting background use only for an app whose usage and behavior point to it.
- Use Wi-Fi instead of mobile data when it is convenient and reliable.
- Turn on Battery Saver on Android or Low Power Mode on iPhone when you need extra runtime. These modes can limit background work or features, so they are short-term runtime measures, not a repair for the underlying cause.
On Pixel, do not force-stop or uninstall Google Play services; Google says it is integrated into Android. If the usage evidence points to another app, try its relevant background restriction or uninstall it if appropriate.

4. Restart, update, and escalate if the problem continues
If the drain persists without a clear usage explanation, restart the phone and check for Android, iOS, and app updates. A factory reset is an advanced step: it removes data and apps. Back up the phone first and follow the manufacturer’s reset instructions rather than using a reset as an initial battery fix.
Check iPhone battery health separately
Daily battery usage shows what consumed power; Battery Health addresses the battery’s condition. On iPhone 15 and later, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. On iPhone 14 and earlier, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. If the status shows Service, Apple says to consider battery service and recommends having it performed by Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
