If PhantomJS screenshots show the wrong font, first find out whether the font request failed, the font is unavailable to the PhantomJS process, or the capture happened before the page was ready. Record the exact PhantomJS binary and version, log page errors and resource requests, then compare the same page and environment. The fix depends on which of those checks fails; there is no documented universal setting that makes PhantomJS fonts render identically on every platform.
Why PhantomJS screenshots can use the wrong font
PhantomJS captures pages with its WebKit-based renderer. Its screen-capture example calls page.render() from the page.open() callback, but the documentation does not say that this callback guarantees web fonts have finished loading and been applied. A fallback font in the image can therefore point to a failed or late font request, a font missing from the runtime environment, or differences in the PhantomJS build or operating system.
Start by identifying which symptom you have: a fallback face or missing glyphs in an image, text that looks different between machines, or PDF text that cannot be selected. These are related but not necessarily the same problem.
Diagnose the renderer in order
-
Confirm the binary and version used for the capture
From the same service, container, CI job, or scheduled task that creates the screenshot, record the executable path and run
phantomjs --version. Check whether more than one PhantomJS installation is present and which one the job actually invokes. The official PhantomJS troubleshooting guide recommends checking the version and warns that multiple installations can conflict. The Tool Desk

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
-
Log page errors and network requests
Instrument the page’s resource-request callbacks and error handler. Look for font URLs, failed or timed-out responses, and JavaScript or page errors that might prevent the expected styles from applying. If HTTPS resources fail while HTTP works, the troubleshooting guide recommends checking the SSL libraries available to the runtime. A browser window loading the page successfully on your workstation does not prove the PhantomJS process can retrieve the same resources.
-
Check access rules and timeouts before opening the page
When a local document loads a remote font, inspect
localToRemoteUrlAccessEnabled. Also check whetherresourceTimeoutis short enough to abort a slow font request. Set these page settings before callingpage.open(): the API documentation says changes made later do not affect that initial open. See the WebPage settings API for the settings and their behavior.Rank #2

-
Verify the font available to the actual process
Check the CSS font-family name, weight, style, and fallback chain, then verify that the requested font is accessible to the operating-system user and container running PhantomJS. A font installed on a developer’s machine may not exist in a CI image or service container. The cited PhantomJS documentation does not prescribe one host-font installation procedure that applies to every operating system, so use the font-management steps appropriate to that runtime.
-
Make capture readiness explicit
Do not treat the
page.open()callback as proof that web fonts are ready. Log when the font resource completes and use a page-specific readiness condition, with a bounded timeout fallback, before rendering. Do not assume modern browser APIs such asdocument.fonts.readyare supported by the older WebKit in your PhantomJS build unless you verify them in that exact build. What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Use a controlled reproduction
To distinguish a font-loading problem from an environment difference, compare captures while holding the page, PhantomJS binary/build, operating system or container, viewport, font files, and output format constant. Change one factor at a time. PhantomJS documents viewport and rendering behavior, but controlling these variables is a diagnostic method rather than a documented automatic font fix.
- If the font URL fails, investigate access, TLS, response status, and timeout evidence.
- If the request succeeds but text falls back, check the CSS face and whether the font is usable in the runtime environment.
- If captures differ between hosts, compare the exact binary/build, OS dependencies, installed fonts, and resource access.
- If only PDF output is affected, investigate PDF-specific behavior separately from image capture.
Separate image rendering from PDF symptoms
The PhantomJS render API lists image formats and says that image generation other than PDF uses Qt’s QImage. It does not document a universal switch for identical fonts across platforms. See the render API for its output behavior.

A historical PhantomJS issue discussion concerns selectable text in generated PDFs. Users reported remote web fonts being rasterized; a later Linux-specific comment said installing TTF files and running fc-cache -fv helped that user’s PDF case. The discussion is anecdotal, dates back to an issue opened in 2012, and another user reported that upgrading a dependency was sufficient. It is not evidence of a general screenshot-font repair, so do not apply it as a blanket fix for image output.
What to do if the problem persists
PhantomJS’s GitHub repository was archived on May 30, 2023. Because it is a legacy project, behavior may depend on old runtime and build dependencies. If a reproducible issue remains after checking requests, fonts, and capture timing, record the environment and evaluate migration to a maintained browser-automation runtime as a separate decision. The available evidence does not establish a particular replacement as the right choice for every site or workflow.

For a screenshot API alternative, try ScreenshotNeo first: it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. Its response identifies page verdict and billing status; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, and failed loads are not billed, and cache hits cost nothing. It also offers an MCP server for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client.
One GET request returns an image or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot; replace the target URL as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API options.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does PhantomJS’s page.open callback mean web fonts are ready?
No. The documented example renders from that callback, but the documentation does not guarantee that web fonts have loaded and been applied by then.
Is fc-cache -fv a fix for PhantomJS screenshot fonts?
Not as a general fix. It appeared in a historical Linux-specific report about selectable text in generated PDFs, not as an established repair for image screenshots.
