To fix Phantom Blade Zero input lag or stuttering on PC, first install the day-one update and finish shader compilation, then test with ray tracing and path tracing off, frame generation disabled, and a frame-rate cap your PC can sustain. These changes help identify whether the problem is delayed controls, shader-compilation hitches, unstable frame pacing, or graphics load; no single setting is a guaranteed fix for every system.
The game launched on Windows in October 2026. S-GAME lists October 29 as its release date, while Steam lists October 28, reflecting storefront or regional timing. This guide uses the developer’s date as the canonical one and treats driver and patch advice as launch-period guidance that can change.
At a glance: diagnose the symptom first
| What you notice | Likely category | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Controls feel delayed, but motion looks smooth | Input latency, frame generation, or display synchronization | Disable frame generation and check the base frame rate |
| Brief hitches during the first run or after an update | Shader or PSO compilation | Let compilation finish before judging gameplay |
| Recurring drops or uneven motion throughout play | GPU load or unstable frame pacing | Turn off ray tracing and path tracing; cap to a sustainable rate |
| Instability began after a recent NVIDIA driver update | Possible driver-specific issue | Check S-GAME’s latest driver guidance before considering a rollback |
These categories can overlap. For example, low base performance can make controls feel less responsive, while frame generation can increase displayed FPS without raising the underlying rendered frame rate by the same amount. Change one thing at a time so you can tell which symptom a change affects.
Use two questions to keep the diagnosis clear: does the picture pause or move unevenly, and does the control response feel late even when motion looks smooth? The first points toward hitches or frame pacing; the second calls for checking base performance, frame generation, and available latency options. If both happen, begin with the low-risk baseline steps below rather than assuming one setting explains everything.

What should I check before changing settings?
Install the latest game update, confirm the game is on an SSD, and allow any initial shader or PSO compilation to complete. These checks remove common launch-period and storage variables before you spend time tuning graphics.
- Confirm the update is installed. S-GAME announced an approximately 5GB day-one patch with bug fixes and significant ray-tracing and path-tracing performance improvements. If you preloaded the game, verify that the update finished downloading and installing before launching. A preloaded base installation is not necessarily the patched version.
- Check the install drive. Steam lists an SSD as a requirement. If the game is installed on a hard disk, move it to an SSD before drawing conclusions from stuttering. A suitable SSD, including an NVMe drive if your PC supports it, enables the required installation and can help with storage-related behavior; it cannot guarantee a fix for GPU-limited rendering, shader compilation, or input latency. A nearly full or heavily contended drive is also worth addressing, but the evidence does not establish a particular free-space threshold.
- Wait for shader/PSO compilation. A launch-period PC analysis reports that the game has a lengthy shader and pipeline-state-object compilation step intended to eliminate most shader-compilation stutters during play. Let that process finish rather than interrupting it. A game update or graphics-driver change may trigger additional compilation work, so a first run after either change is not a reliable measure of steady gameplay.
- Start from a clean baseline. Note your current settings, then turn off ray tracing and path tracing and disable frame generation. Avoid changing several settings at once; otherwise, you will not know which change affected the symptom.
The day-one patch matters for more than a version number: S-GAME specifically called out ray-tracing and path-tracing performance improvements alongside bug fixes. If those effects were enabled before the patch completed, test again after updating rather than assuming the old performance result still applies. The patch was approximately 5GB, so allow enough time for the download and installation to finish.
Storage is an enabling requirement, not a universal performance upgrade. A 1TB NVMe SSD is a reasonable search term if you need additional compatible game storage, but check your PC’s available connections and capacity before buying. Moving the game from a hard disk to an SSD addresses the listed storage requirement and may help storage-related behavior; it will not turn a below-target GPU into a recommended one or remove latency caused by frame generation.

How do I tell input lag from stuttering or low FPS?
Input lag is a delay between a control and its on-screen response; stuttering is uneven motion or a hitch, and low FPS is a consistently low rendering rate. Watch for whether the picture is smooth, whether the delay persists during smooth motion, and whether the problem appears only during the initial run or after a change.
- Delayed controls with otherwise smooth motion: investigate the base frame rate, frame generation, and display synchronization first. Test frame generation off before making other changes. If the game feels more responsive with it disabled, the generated display rate may have been masking a low base render rate.
- Brief pauses or hitches, especially at first: let shader/PSO compilation finish. If the problem started after a game or driver update, allow any new compilation work to complete before deciding that normal play is still affected.
- Repeated drops or uneven motion throughout play: suspect sustained graphics load or frame pacing. Turn off ray tracing and path tracing, reduce demanding visual settings, consider lower resolution or more aggressive upscaling, and cap the frame rate to a level the PC can maintain consistently.
- Problems that begin with a driver change: check the developer’s current driver notice. Driver-specific instability is different from a system that simply cannot sustain its selected graphics settings.
A displayed FPS counter is useful but does not tell the whole story: a high or fluctuating number does not prove that controls are responsive or frame times are consistent. For troubleshooting, prioritize even pacing and a repeatable control feel over the highest peak FPS.
It also helps to compare the same situation before and after a change. Use a repeatable part of play, keep the same resolution and visual settings, and note whether you see a pause, a continuing uneven cadence, or only delayed controls. This is not a formal benchmark, but it reduces the chance that a different scene or an unfinished compilation step is mistaken for a fix. Avoid comparing a first run immediately after an update with a later run after the game has had time to compile shaders.
“Phantom Blade Zero low FPS” and “Phantom Blade Zero feels delayed” describe related but different complaints. If the frame rate is low, lowering GPU load may improve both smoothness and responsiveness. If the picture is already moving smoothly but control response is still unsatisfying, lowering every visual setting may not address the cause; first compare frame generation off and check the base rendered rate.

- Disable ray tracing and path tracing. S-GAME specifically highlighted improvements to both in the day-one patch, making them sensible first settings to isolate. If frame pacing improves, keep them off or re-enable them one at a time to see what your system can sustain.
- Lower the resolution or use a more aggressive upscaling mode. Upscaling is part of the configuration behind the performance targets listed on Steam, not automatically a sign of a defect. The trade-off is image quality: more aggressive upscaling can make the picture softer or less detailed. Change one setting, then compare both smoothness and image clarity.
- Reduce other demanding visual settings if necessary. The collected evidence does not identify one universal setting beyond ray tracing and path tracing as the cause on every PC. Lower settings incrementally rather than applying an arbitrary preset and assuming it is optimal for your hardware.
- Cap the frame rate at a sustainable target. A stable 60 FPS target is more useful for responsive combat than a higher number that repeatedly falls. If your PC cannot hold 60, use a lower sustainable cap and adjust settings or upscaling until pacing is consistent. The right target depends on the system; there is no universal cap proven to work for all PCs.
- Re-test before restoring effects. Play long enough to see whether hitches recur, then restore one effect at a time. If the problem returns after enabling a feature, you have a more useful clue than a long list of simultaneous setting changes.
Do not interpret the official performance targets as guarantees for every configuration. Steam’s minimum target is 1080p at 30 FPS with upscaling enabled; its recommended target is 1440p at 60 FPS with upscaling enabled. Both specify upscaling as part of the target setup.
Think of each setting change as a trade-off across four things: latency, frame-time stability, image quality, and how broadly the advice applies. Disabling ray tracing or reducing resolution can lower graphics load, but the visual result changes. An FPS cap can favor consistency over a higher peak. A driver rollback has a wider effect on the PC and is less easily reversed than toggling a graphics option. Frame generation can improve the appearance of motion while leaving the base rendered rate lower than the displayed number suggests.
For a useful test, first choose a target your system can sustain, then lower graphics load until the game reaches it with consistent pacing. If 60 FPS is not stable, a lower steady cap is preferable to repeatedly falling from a higher target. The Steam figures describe the minimum and recommended configurations with upscaling enabled; they do not establish a universal preset or guarantee the same performance in every scene.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan DLSS Frame Generation cause input lag?
It can complicate diagnosis because frame generation may raise displayed FPS without increasing the base rendered-frame rate by the same amount. Establish a baseline with frame generation off, then evaluate responsiveness separately from the displayed FPS number.
NVIDIA’s launch driver announcement lists support for DLSS 4.5, Dynamic Multi Frame Generation on supported RTX 50-series GPUs, and NVIDIA Reflex. NVIDIA describes Reflex as a PC-latency reduction feature. A launch-period PC analysis reports Reflex support but says it was tied to DLSS Frame Generation in that analysis; the current in-game menu behavior may differ, so check the live menu rather than relying on a fixed sequence of clicks.
- Turn off frame generation and note whether the controls feel more responsive, even if the displayed frame rate falls.
- Reduce graphics load or resolution and choose a sustainable base frame-rate target. Do not use generated frames to disguise a low underlying rate.
- If you have supported NVIDIA hardware, check the current game menu for Reflex and use it according to the options the current build actually presents.
- If you turn frame generation back on, compare the control response directly rather than judging the result by FPS alone. Keep it only if the visual smoothness is worth the trade-off for your system.
The available evidence gives no universal input-lag reduction percentage for this game across hardware. DLSS, frame generation, and Reflex are not interchangeable: do not assume that enabling frame generation by itself fixes latency.
Use a simple A/B check rather than assuming a feature is either always good or always bad. With frame generation off, note how the controls feel and how smooth the image looks. Then enable it only if the current build and your hardware offer it, and compare both qualities again. If the displayed rate rises but control response feels worse, the higher counter is not a useful result for a combat-focused game. If motion looks smoother and controls remain acceptable, it may be a reasonable visual trade-off on that specific PC.

Support also depends on hardware. NVIDIA lists Dynamic Multi Frame Generation for supported RTX 50-series GPUs, so it is not a universal PC setting. DLSS 4.5 and Reflex are NVIDIA features as described in NVIDIA’s launch driver announcement; do not assume that an AMD system has those same options. Check the actual menu and your GPU support rather than following instructions written for a different configuration.

Should NVIDIA users roll back their graphics driver?
Only consider a rollback if the problem appears tied to a recent NVIDIA driver and S-GAME’s current guidance still recommends it. At launch, S-GAME reported performance instability with driver 621.01 and said its testing found version 617.42 offered the best experience at that time.
The developer’s launch announcement recommended a clean installation of 617.42 for affected players and advised staying on it until NVIDIA released a subsequent update. That is dated, version-specific launch guidance—not a permanent recommendation. Before changing drivers, check for a newer S-GAME notice and NVIDIA’s current release information; a later driver may have superseded the launch advice.
- Write down the current driver version and the date the instability began. If the issue predates the update, a rollback is less clearly relevant.
- Check whether S-GAME or NVIDIA has published newer guidance for the current game build and driver. Do not roll back solely because 617.42 appears in an older launch announcement.
- If the current developer guidance still identifies the installed driver as a problem and recommends 617.42, follow that guidance’s clean-install instructions. Save any settings you may want to restore.
- Test the same game scene and settings after the change. If instability persists, reconsider graphics load, compilation, storage, and hardware capability rather than repeatedly swapping drivers.
A driver rollback is more disruptive than a reversible graphics-setting change, and it may affect other games or software. Treat it as a targeted troubleshooting step, not a general stuttering fix.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The launch guidance was specific: S-GAME creative director and CEO Soulframe Liang said, “We’ve observed some performance instability with NVIDIA’s latest 621.01 driver. Based on our testing, version 617.42 currently offers the best experience in Phantom Blade Zero.” The word “currently” referred to that launch-period statement, not an assurance that 617.42 remains the best driver now. Check the date and current official notices before taking action.
If you do roll back, change only the driver and repeat the test with the same game build and settings. A clean installation may be appropriate when following the developer’s dated instruction, but do not repeatedly install older versions without a clear driver-related pattern. If the symptom began before the driver update or remains after an advised rollback, return to the broader diagnosis rather than treating every hitch as a driver fault.
Does your PC meet the game’s requirements?
Compare your system with Steam’s published requirements before expecting a particular resolution or frame rate. Settings changes may reduce symptoms, but they cannot create the performance target listed for hardware that falls below the stated tier.
| Steam listing | Graphics hardware | Other requirements and target |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 6GB or AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB | Windows 10/11 64-bit, DirectX 12, 16GB RAM, SSD; 1080p/30 FPS with upscaling enabled |
| Recommended | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti 8GB or AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT 12GB | Windows 10/11 64-bit, DirectX 12, 16GB RAM, SSD; 1440p/60 FPS with upscaling enabled |
These are the targets Steam publishes, not a promise that every PC with the named parts will hold the target in every scene or at every setting. If you are below the minimum graphics tier, reduce resolution and demanding features and use upscaling where available, but expect trade-offs. If you meet the recommended tier and still see persistent trouble, the symptom-based checks above are more useful than assuming the GPU is the only cause.
The listed baseline is Windows 10 or 11 64-bit, DirectX 12, 16GB of RAM, and an SSD. Steam names a GTX 1660 with 6GB or RX 5500 XT with 8GB as minimum graphics, and an RTX 3060 Ti with 8GB or RX 6700 XT with 12GB as recommended graphics. Check the exact model and memory capacity rather than relying on a broad label such as “gaming PC.”

Use the target figures as context when choosing settings: the minimum entry pairs 1080p/30 FPS with upscaling, while the recommended entry pairs 1440p/60 FPS with upscaling. Those targets help explain why native rendering at a higher resolution may not be the right starting point. They are not a controlled benchmark across every GPU, nor do they promise an identical result across scenes. No single graphics preset or upgrade can be claimed to solve every instance of input lag and stuttering.
If your PC is below the recommended tier, first try reversible settings changes—lowering resolution, using available upscaling, turning off ray tracing and path tracing, and choosing a stable cap. Consider a graphics-card upgrade only after comparing your current GPU, desired resolution, target frame rate, and available feature support. An RTX card may be relevant if you specifically want NVIDIA DLSS or Reflex options, but buying one alone does not guarantee that every hitch disappears.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I do if the stuttering fix did not work?
Return to a controlled baseline and change only one variable at a time. This narrows the cause without mistaking a temporary first-run hitch or a driver-specific issue for a universal game setting problem.
- Confirm the game update is installed, the game is on an SSD, and shader/PSO compilation has finished.
- Disable frame generation, ray tracing, and path tracing; use a sustainable frame-rate cap.
- If smoothness improves, restore one feature at a time and stop at the first setting that brings back the problem.
- If the image is smooth but controls feel delayed, focus on base frame rate, frame generation, and available latency options rather than lowering every visual setting.
- If hitches persist throughout play, lower resolution or visual load and check whether the PC meets the published requirements.
- If instability coincided with a recent NVIDIA driver, verify the latest official guidance before trying a clean rollback.
Keep a short note of the game version, graphics driver, settings changed, and whether the issue is a hitch, sustained low FPS, or delayed controls. That makes it easier to compare results after updates and to describe the problem accurately if you seek support.
For a tidy troubleshooting record, include whether the issue happens on the first run, after a patch, or throughout normal play; whether frame generation is on; whether ray tracing or path tracing is enabled; and whether the game is installed on an SSD. These details distinguish shader-compilation stutter, graphics load, storage requirements, and driver timing without assuming they share one cause.
Prioritize changes by reversibility. Completing the update, waiting for compilation, disabling an effect, and adjusting a frame cap are straightforward tests. A driver rollback is more involved and should follow current official guidance. Hardware purchases are the least reversible option and should come only after checking requirements and deciding on a resolution and target frame rate. A storage purchase can meet the SSD requirement if you lack suitable space, but it is not a substitute for GPU performance or latency troubleshooting.

Is Phantom Blade Zero available on macOS?
The game’s published PC requirements specify Windows 10/11 64-bit and DirectX 12. The evidence available for this guide covers the Windows PC version, not a native macOS release.
Why does Phantom Blade Zero stutter the first time I play?
A launch-period PC analysis reports a lengthy shader and PSO compilation step intended to eliminate most shader-compilation stutters during play. Let compilation finish before judging normal gameplay; a game or driver update may require additional compilation.
What should I try first if Phantom Blade Zero feels delayed?
Turn off frame generation and compare control response while checking the base frame rate. If motion looks smooth but input still feels delayed, check the current in-game latency options on supported hardware rather than relying on the displayed FPS alone.
Should I use DLSS Frame Generation to fix low FPS or input lag?
Do not use frame generation to mask a low base render rate. It can increase displayed FPS without increasing the underlying rendered rate by the same amount. Establish a baseline with it off, then compare control response if you enable it again.
Should I install NVIDIA driver 617.42?
S-GAME recommended 617.42 as launch-period guidance after reporting instability with 621.01. Check current S-GAME and NVIDIA notices first; the older recommendation may have been superseded, and a rollback is only a targeted step if the issue appears driver-related.
Will an SSD fix every Phantom Blade Zero stutter?
No. Steam lists an SSD as a requirement, so installing on one addresses the storage requirement and may help storage-related behavior. It does not guarantee a fix for GPU-limited rendering, shader compilation, or frame-generation latency.
The Bottom Line
For a practical Phantom Blade Zero stuttering fix, install the approximately 5GB day-one patch, finish shader/PSO compilation, and confirm the game is on an SSD. Then test with ray tracing, path tracing, and frame generation off, and cap performance at a rate your PC can sustain. If controls still feel delayed while motion is smooth, investigate base frame rate and the current latency options; if instability began with an NVIDIA driver change, check S-GAME’s latest guidance before considering a rollback. Steam’s published targets—1080p/30 FPS minimum and 1440p/60 FPS recommended, both with upscaling—are configuration targets, not guarantees for every PC.
