1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPete Warden and security researcher Alasdair Allan found that iOS 4 stored iPhone latitude-longitude coordinates and timestamps in unencrypted files. IEEE Spectrum reported that someone with access to an iPhone or a computer synced with it could retrieve months of location history. The finding was not that the data was publicly available online; the risk depended on access to the device or its synced computer.
What iPhone location data did Pete Warden find?
The files described by IEEE Spectrum contained latitude-longitude coordinates paired with timestamps. Because the information was stored unencrypted, a person with access to the phone or a computer synced with it could retrieve a record covering months, according to the feature.
Warden initially used the data to trace his own travels. He then recognized that the same detailed record could reveal private movements if someone else gained access to it. This was a local-access privacy risk, not evidence that anyone on the internet could simply look up iPhone owners’ whereabouts.
How the finding became public
Warden and Allan mapped the records
Warden and Allan released iPhone Tracker, an open-source application that visualized the stored information on a map. IEEE Spectrum reported that the app received more than 4 million downloads in its first week; that figure is the magazine’s report, not an independently verified download count.

- Unlocked and Compatible with AT&T / Tmobile and all Service providers that Use AT&T / Tmobile Network. NOT Compatible with Verizon or any service provider that uses Verizon Network. Check before Purchase
- This device is Preowned, Tested and Passed in Excellent Condition, Battery Life Minimum 80% or more as compare to new.
- IOS Version upgradable to 15.8.5 but the device continues to receive security updates under the iOS 15 branch.
- Includes a new cable only. User manual and charger are not included. SIM card is provided by your wireless service provider and is not included with this device.
- 4.7" Retina HD display, 12MP camera and 4K video at 30 fps / 7MP FaceTime HD camera with Retina Flash Black
Users and researchers also reproduced the result, according to IEEE Spectrum. The combination of a map-based demonstration and reproducible findings made the stored records easier to understand as a privacy issue, rather than an obscure detail inside a file.
What Apple said, according to IEEE Spectrum
IEEE Spectrum reported that Apple responded within a week, characterizing the behavior as a bug connected to a crowdsourced database of nearby Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers, and saying it planned an iOS update to address privacy concerns. The original Apple statement is not available in the cited account, so this description is attributed to IEEE Spectrum rather than presented as a direct quotation from Apple.

- Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
Why the IEEE Spectrum feature also tells a game-development story
The feature pairs the iOS privacy discovery with a separate, earlier episode from Warden’s career. The two stories are not technically connected: one concerns rushed game development in 1998, the other a later discovery about location data stored by iOS 4. The game anecdote provides a second portrait of the engineer, not an explanation for the security finding.
A last-minute pit crew in Formula 1 98
In 1998, Warden was a graphics engineer at Visual Sciences, a small U.K.-based studio making Formula 1 98 for PlayStation. IEEE Spectrum describes a 10-person team given nine months to build the game after another studio declined the project. Two weeks before launch, the developers realized that the packaging promised an animated pit crew that had not been built. They improvised small triangular crew members to pick up square tires.

Warden recalled the pressure this way: “As an engineer, knowing you’re doing a bad job is the ultimate terror.”

IEEE Spectrum says Apple later hired Warden to work on image processing and that he left in 2008 after five years. In a post dated 4 July 2008, Warden independently confirmed that the previous day had been his last as an Apple engineer and reflected on his five years there: his farewell post.

The feature’s later-career account says Warden cofounded Jetpac in 2011, that Google acquired it, and that he worked on TensorFlow Lite before leaving Google in 2022 to start Useful Sensors. It also describes an offline translation device as his project at the time the feature was written. Because the feature’s publication date is not available in the cited text, that project should be understood as a time-specific description, not necessarily his current work. Warden is quoted saying of it, “That, so far, has not been a horror story.”
