A personal identification number (PIN) is a secret, usually numeric code that you memorize and enter to prove who you are or approve access. It is an authentication secret—not simply a number that identifies you.

What does PIN stand for?

PIN stands for personal identification number. In everyday use, it means a memorized secret presented during an authentication process. NIST’s glossary defines a PIN in a cardholder context as “a numeric secret that a cardholder memorizes and uses as part of authenticating their identity” (NIST glossary).

What is a PIN used for?

A system may ask you to enter a PIN to authenticate a claimant or cardholder, or to authorize access or an action. For example, a payment-card system may use a PIN as part of checking that the person presenting the card is its authorized holder. The PIN is the secret used in that check; it is not necessarily the only information the system requests.

Is a PIN the same as a password?

A PIN is a type of memorized secret used like a password for authentication. NIST SP 800-63-4 describes a PIN as “a password that typically consists of only decimal digits” (NIST SP 800-63-4). The word “typically” is important: it describes common practice, not a rule that every PIN must contain only digits.

Is a PIN the same as an identification number?

No. Despite the words in its name, a PIN is generally a secret used to authenticate someone, rather than a public identifier. An account number or card number can identify an account or card; a PIN is a credential the holder keeps secret. A system may ask for both an identifier and a PIN, each serving a different purpose.

How many digits does a PIN have?

There is no universal PIN length established by the cited general definitions. NIST describes PINs as typically numeric but does not specify a required number of digits in those definitions. The length and format depend on the system using the PIN.

What does the PIN standard for payment cards cover?

For card-based systems, ISO 9564-1:2017 addresses PIN management and security in retail banking contexts. Its stated scope includes ATMs, point-of-sale terminals, automated fuel dispensers, vending machines, banking kiosks, and systems for PIN selection or change (ISO 9564-1:2017). ISO reports that a fifth-edition committee draft is under development; that draft is not a published replacement for the 2017 edition.
