Start by identifying exactly what is failing in Persona 4 Golden: startup, resolution, frame rate, cutscenes, or controller input. The available fixes are symptom-specific. Several game-specific workarounds come from community-maintained guidance and are not confirmed solutions for every PC, so change one thing at a time and keep reversible steps reversible.
Before troubleshooting: identify the failure
Note when the problem occurs and what changed beforehand. A game that closes before reaching its menu is a different case from low frame rates throughout play, video-only stutter, or a controller that Windows sees but the game does not.
- Record the exact error text and whether the game exits before or after the intro.
- For performance problems, distinguish consistently low FPS from intermittent frame pacing or stutter limited to a cutscene.
- For input problems, check whether Windows detects the device, whether Steam sees it, and whether the game responds to it.
- Keep the game version, Windows version, GPU and CPU models, graphics driver, overlays or recording tools, display scaling, and controller model handy.
Steam lists ATLUS as the developer and SEGA as the publisher. Its 2020 listing specifies DirectX 11, 14 GB of storage, 2 GB of RAM minimum, and 4 GB recommended. It lists Windows 8.1 as the minimum operating system and Windows 10 as recommended. Separately, Steam says its client has required Windows 10 or later since January 1, 2024; that client requirement is not the same as the game’s listed operating-system requirement. Check the current Steam listing for the requirements and support routes.
If the game will not launch or closes immediately
Capture the failure and try a low-risk check
- Write down the exact error and whether the game closes before or after the intro. If it began after a driver, game, or Windows change, record that too.
- Temporarily close overlays and monitoring tools, including RTSS if you use it, then launch the game again. PCGamingWiki lists RTSS as a possible factor in immediate closure, but marks that cause “citation needed”; this is a diagnostic check, not a confirmed fix for every crash.
- If the error specifically refers to setup or minimum requirements, compare the PC with Steam’s listing above before changing game files.
Handle DLL advice cautiously
PCGamingWiki describes removing or renaming DirectX-related DLL files as a workaround for a setup error, but marks the entry “citation needed.” Do not delete files as a routine first step. If you decide to investigate that report, identify the exact files and preserve a backup so you can restore them; if the error does not specifically match, skip this workaround.

Escalate through support
If the game still fails, use SEGA support or the support and community links on the Steam game page. Include the error text, failure stage, and the system details you collected.
If resolution or Windows scaling is wrong
PCGamingWiki documents these game-specific display workarounds. Try one change at a time; if it does not help, restore the prior setting and note your Windows scaling, desktop resolution, and game display mode.

Try the high-DPI override
- Locate the game’s executable,
P4G.exe. - Open its Properties, then the Compatibility tab, and open the high-DPI settings.
- Enable the high-DPI scaling override and set scaling to Application. Apply the change and test the game.
Refresh the resolution choices
- In Windows display settings, try 100% scaling.
- Set the game to Windowed mode, exit it, and reopen it.
- Choose the desired resolution. After selecting it, try Borderless or Fullscreen if that is your preferred mode.
These are reported workarounds, not guaranteed fixes. If the choices remain wrong, report your Windows scaling percentage, desktop resolution, and the game mode you tried.
If frame rate is low or cutscenes stutter
Separate low FPS from video-only stutter
Check whether performance is poor throughout gameplay or only during video and cutscenes. Intermittent stutter during ordinary play is another distinct symptom. The available sources do not establish one current cause or universal fix for general or cutscene stutter; a community discussion about cutscenes is an individual report, not proof that its remedy applies to other systems.

Check which GPU runs the game
On a laptop or other system with integrated graphics and a discrete NVIDIA GPU, check whether P4G.exe is assigned to the high-performance NVIDIA processor. PCGamingWiki lists this as a possible fix for very low FPS, but marks the claim “citation needed.” Treat it as a GPU-assignment check rather than evidence that integrated graphics explains every performance problem.
Collect details before changing more settings
- GPU model and graphics driver version, plus CPU model.
- Whether this is a laptop or a desktop with more than one GPU.
- Whether overlays, monitoring, recording, or streaming software is running.
- Whether the issue is low FPS throughout play, intermittent stutter, or limited to cutscenes.
- Game version and whether the problem began after a patch or driver update.
These details help distinguish a GPU-selection issue from a playback-specific or system-specific problem; the reports available do not establish how common any one cause is.

If a controller is missing, has wrong prompts, or changes audio
Persona 4 Golden is listed as supporting controllers, including XInput-compatible devices, and controller remapping. Start with the existing device and configuration before considering replacement hardware.
Check the input path in order
- Confirm that Windows detects the controller and that it works outside the game.
- In Steam, review the game’s controller configuration and Steam Input settings.
- Check the game’s remapping options and test the controller again.
- Change one setting at a time. Avoid running multiple remapping layers simultaneously while diagnosing, so you can tell which change affected input.
If the active audio device changes
A Steam Community bug thread reports a case where a controller with voice-chat functionality was detected by Windows as a headset device, changing the active audio device. If that matches your symptoms, check Windows’ selected output device while connecting the controller. This is an anecdotal report, not evidence of a general controller defect.

When a different controller makes sense
Consider an XInput-compatible PC controller only if the current device is faulty or unsuitable. The game is documented as supporting XInput-compatible controllers; buying another device is not the routine answer to a Steam Input or remapping configuration problem.
