A 2025 seven-prompt comparison named ChatGPT the winner, but it does not prove ChatGPT is better for everyone—or that it leads today. The practical choice depends on the job: Perplexity is a strong starting point for current web research with visible citations; ChatGPT is a strong starting point for writing, coding, and broader creative work.

What the seven-prompt test found

A Tom’s Guide comparison published April 9, 2025, reportedly tested the services across seven categories and named ChatGPT the overall winner. An accessible later account reports that ChatGPT won the math, translation, poem, tariff-explanation, and clean-joke rounds, while Perplexity won the Bitcoin-price and Python string-reversal rounds. Those round results are reported by the later account, rather than established here through an independent reproduction of the test.

The available coverage identifies the setup as ChatGPT-4o against Perplexity, which was allowed to choose its best model for each query. That means the comparison measured configured products, not two identical models under controlled conditions.

Why the result does not settle which AI is better

  • Seven prompts are a small sample. They can illustrate differences on those tasks, but cannot establish a general-purpose ranking.
  • The model setup was uneven. ChatGPT-4o was tested, while Perplexity could select its model per prompt.
  • Important capabilities were outside the test. The later analysis says it did not audit citation accuracy or evaluate long documents, multimodal work, data analysis, or complex coding.
  • The result is dated. AI models and product features change, so a test published in 2025 is not a present-day subscription or model benchmark.

It is most accurate to treat the winner as the result of that particular editorial comparison—not as proof that one service is universally more capable.

Which one should you use?

Your task Better starting fit Why What to check
Finding current facts and sources Perplexity Its search-first, citation-forward presentation is designed to surface sources. Open the cited pages and confirm they actually support the answer.
Writing, brainstorming, creative work, or coding ChatGPT Comparison coverage characterizes it as the broader general-purpose assistant and creation tool. Review factual claims and test code before relying on them.
Research followed by a polished deliverable Either, or both in sequence The services overlap, but emphasize different workflows. Judge the exact task and verify evidence before using it in the final work.

Is Perplexity better than ChatGPT for research?

For research where you want current web results and a visible trail to sources, Perplexity is a sensible place to start. Its citations make it easier to inspect where claims came from. But citations are a route for checking an answer, not proof that the answer is correct: a system can misread a source or attach a source that does not support the specific claim.

ChatGPT may be a better fit when the main task is explaining a concept, drafting, or developing an idea through conversation. Neither service should be treated as categorically more accurate across all subjects or tasks.

How to make your own comparison useful

  1. Choose tasks you actually do. Include a current-facts question, a writing or reasoning task, and any specialized work that matters to you.
  2. Use the same prompt and constraints. Keep the requested format, context, and evaluation criteria consistent.
  3. Check the substance, not just the style. For factual work, inspect sources and verify key claims. For code, run tests; for writing, assess usefulness and required revisions.
  4. Compare the products as you would use them. Model options and features can differ and change over time, so note the configuration rather than assuming a test applies to every version or plan.
