Spot trading buys or sells the crypto asset itself; a perpetual future gives you derivative exposure to its price without a fixed expiry. Spot can mean ownership of the asset, depending on custody and the venue’s terms. A perpetual does not automatically give you the underlying crypto and may add variable funding payments, margin requirements, and liquidation risk. Neither structure is risk-free, and the right comparison depends on the contract, platform, holding period, and your location.

Spot trading and perpetual futures compared

Feature Spot trading Perpetual futures
What you trade A cash-market purchase or sale of the crypto asset. A derivative contract whose value references an asset price; it is not the same as buying that asset. CFTC virtual-currency advisory
Ownership and settlement You acquire the asset, but whether you control the keys or a platform holds it depends on the custody arrangement. Settlement depends on the contract. You may not receive the underlying crypto; check the contract specifications and settlement method. CFTC advisory
Expiration Holding the asset does not involve a derivatives-contract expiry. No fixed expiration date by design. Dated futures, by contrast, expire and may need to be rolled into a later contract. CFTC Chairman’s May 29, 2026 statement
Potential costs Venue trading fees, spread, and possibly custody or withdrawal charges; amounts vary by provider and arrangement. Trading costs and potentially periodic funding payments; terms and amounts vary by contract and market conditions.
Leverage and liquidation An ordinary, unborrowed spot purchase does not have derivatives-margin liquidation. Borrowed or leveraged spot products are a separate case. Margin can magnify exposure. Adverse price moves can trigger additional margin requirements or position closure, under the contract’s rules. CFTC advisory
Other risks Volatility, custody, cyber, venue, and market risks remain relevant. Market and venue risks remain, with additional contract, collateral, funding, and liquidation considerations.

What spot trading means

A spot trade is a cash-market transaction: you pay for a crypto asset or sell one you hold. For example, the CFTC describes buying bitcoin for a personal wallet. That example does not mean every spot customer self-custodies. On some services, the platform holds assets for customers; on others, users may transfer assets to wallets they control. Check who holds the keys, what rights you have to the assets, and how withdrawals work.

Spot ownership is not a guarantee of safety. The CFTC warns that virtual-currency cash markets may have limited government supervision and identifies risks including price swings, manipulation, cyber incidents, weak platform safeguards, and conflicts of interest. Its virtual-currency advisory is investor education, not a legal interpretation or a statement of CFTC policy.

What a perpetual future means

A crypto perpetual is a derivative with no scheduled expiration. In a May 29, 2026 statement, CFTC Chairman Michael S. Selig described perpetuals as contracts with no fixed expiry and periodic funding-rate payments designed to keep the contract price relatively aligned with the underlying asset’s spot price. The statement explains the structure; it is not a universal specification for every product. Read the CFTC chairman’s statement.

Funding is exchanged according to the terms of the specific contract. Its formula, interval, caps, and which side pays can differ by venue and market conditions. Do not assume that funding is always a fee paid in one direction, or that a rate observed now will apply throughout a holding period. Perpetuals avoid the scheduled expiry of dated futures, but funding is an ongoing cost or payment to consider.

Do perpetual futures give you ownership of crypto?

Not necessarily. A perpetual position is contractual price exposure, not proof that you own or can withdraw the referenced crypto. Depending on the contract, positions may be cash-settled rather than settled by delivering the asset. The CFTC’s general futures advisory cautions that customers may not be entitled to receive the actual virtual currency and says settlement can use a contract-specified index or auction price. Because that advisory is not a specification for every perpetual, read the exact contract’s settlement and delivery terms.

How to compare the costs

There is no universal answer to which structure is cheaper. The cited sources do not establish current comparable fee schedules or funding rates for a particular venue. Compare the costs that apply to the asset, platform, contract, and period you actually expect to hold the position—not just the displayed trading commission.

  • Spot: Check trading fees and spread, plus any custody, deposit, or withdrawal charges that apply to your arrangement.
  • Perpetual: Check trading fees and spread, then review the funding formula and historical funding for the contract over a comparable holding period. Funding can add to or reduce the position’s cost.
  • Dated futures: If comparing them as an alternative, account for contract expiry and the cost or price effect of replacing an expiring contract. This rollover issue is distinct from perpetual funding. A joint SEC/CFTC staff alert discusses basis and rollover effects for funds holding bitcoin futures; it is not a disclosure of retail perpetual fees or rates. Read the SEC/CFTC staff alert.

How leverage changes the risk

Buying spot with cash exposes you to the asset’s price movement, but an ordinary unborrowed purchase does not have the derivatives-margin liquidation mechanism. A perpetual traded on margin can create exposure larger than the collateral posted. That leverage magnifies both gains and losses: an adverse move may require more margin or prompt a closeout, and losses on leveraged futures can exceed the initial investment, according to the CFTC. CFTC guidance warns that leveraged accounts amplify trading risk.

There is no single liquidation price that applies to all perpetuals. Before opening a position, review the contract’s initial and maintenance margin, mark-price methodology, collateral haircuts, liquidation fees, and whether the account uses isolated or cross margin. These details determine how the platform handles collateral and adverse price moves.

Which is riskier: spot or perpetual futures?

Perpetuals generally introduce risks that a cash purchase does not, especially margin, funding, and forced liquidation. But “spot” is not synonymous with safe: the asset can fall sharply, and custody or platform failures can affect access to funds. Risk depends on the position size, leverage, custody, contract terms, venue safeguards, and the trader’s ability to absorb losses. The product structure alone cannot determine which choice is appropriate for a particular person.

Availability and regulation depend on location

Access and regulatory treatment depend on the specific contract, venue, customer type, and jurisdiction. On May 29, 2026, the CFTC announced a specific order permitting a designated contract market to list a bitcoin-spot-referencing perpetual, and said it would review perpetuals referencing other asset classes case by case. That U.S. action does not establish that every perpetual is authorized, available to retail customers, or accessible in other countries. See the CFTC’s May 29, 2026 release. Verify local eligibility and the venue’s registration through official disclosures.

A practical decision checklist

  • If you want to acquire and potentially withdraw the crypto asset, confirm the spot service’s custody and withdrawal terms.
  • If you are considering a perpetual, confirm whether it is cash-settled or deliverable and understand how funding is calculated and paid.
  • For any leveraged position, understand margin, liquidation, collateral, and closeout rules before trading.
  • Compare the full costs over your intended holding period, including spreads and any relevant funding, custody, or withdrawal charges.
  • Confirm that the venue and product are available to you under the rules that apply in your jurisdiction.
