For most players with access to a current Xbox, the Xbox version is the practical pick: Microsoft lists it for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, and its Xbox 360 release has an Xbox One X enhancement. Choose the Nintendo 64 version if you want the original 2000 release or its local multiplayer—and check the Expansion Pak requirements before you start.
How the Nintendo 64 and Xbox versions differ
| What matters | Nintendo 64 | Xbox |
|---|---|---|
| Release and identity | Rare’s original Nintendo 64 game, released on 19 May 2000, according to Nintendo UK. | A separate Xbox edition listed by Microsoft and included in Rare Replay; it is not the Nintendo 64 cartridge running natively on Xbox. |
| Where it is listed | For Nintendo 64 hardware. | Microsoft lists play on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, as well as Xbox Cloud Gaming. Availability can depend on region, account, and plan; check the live store listing. |
| Multiplayer | Nintendo lists one to four players and configurable deathmatch options. Local play makes this the version to consider if playing together on original hardware is the priority. | Microsoft’s listing describes multiplayer modes through Xbox LIVE. The official material does not establish that every N64 multiplayer option is present in the Xbox edition. |
| Presentation | The original N64 release, with visual effects and controller configuration options described by Nintendo. | Microsoft describes polished textures. Xbox Wire says the Xbox 360 game received an Xbox One X enhancement supporting resolution up to 4K, with improved texture filtering and color detail. |
Choose the Xbox version if you want modern Xbox access
The Xbox edition is the easier recommendation if you already play on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S and want the game on a current console. Microsoft lists it on those systems and includes it in Rare Replay. Its Xbox 360 release also received an Xbox One X enhancement; the up-to-4K description applies specifically to that enhancement, not necessarily to every Xbox model or play method.
That makes Xbox a strong fit for convenience and enhanced presentation, but it does not settle every technical comparison. The cited official sources do not provide a directly comparable N64-versus-Xbox frame rate, a detailed control-feel or audio comparison, or a complete mode-by-mode parity list. It would be misleading to promise a particular frame rate or say the Xbox edition includes every N64 option.
Choose Nintendo 64 for the original release and local play
The Nintendo 64 version is the one to choose if you specifically want the original release on its original hardware. Nintendo lists three difficulty levels—Agent, Secret Agent, and Perfect Agent—and a one-to-four-player range. Its product information also highlights configurable deathmatch options.
#1 Best Overall
Plan the setup around the N64 Expansion Pak. Nintendo states that the accessory is required for solo missions and three- to four-player modes. One- to two-player deathmatch and Challenge Mode are available without it. Check the exact requirements on Nintendo’s Perfect Dark page before choosing a cartridge setup.
