Choose Chromatic if Storybook stories are the center of your component workflow; choose Percy if you want visual checks integrated into a broader browser or end-to-end test suite. The better fit depends on how your team creates UI states, which browsers it needs to cover, and how each service counts usage—not on an established difference in visual accuracy.
How Percy and Chromatic differ
Both services capture rendered interfaces, compare them with accepted baselines, and present visual changes for review. Chromatic documents a cloud-browser workflow built around Storybook stories, alongside integrations for Vitest, Playwright, and Cypress. Percy documents its own SDK and a BrowserStack SDK path, with integrations for a broad range of test frameworks and runners.
The practical distinction is the starting point. Chromatic is especially aligned with component states represented as stories. Percy can fit teams that already reach important UI states through browser automation, or that want to use BrowserStack Automate to configure browser and platform combinations.
Choose based on your existing workflow
Choose Chromatic for a Storybook-centered team
- Your stories already represent the components and UI states that need visual review. Chromatic’s documentation describes stories as the basis of its visual testing workflow and documents an official Storybook addon.
- You want component- or story-level baselines and review. Chromatic’s FAQ describes tracking component baselines across branches and merges, reviewing components individually, and carrying approvals forward. Those are vendor descriptions of its workflow, not independent performance findings.
- You are comfortable sending a story build or test archive to Chromatic’s cloud for testing.
Choose Percy for an existing browser-test suite
- You want to add visual captures to an existing end-to-end or browser automation suite. BrowserStack documents Percy SDK integrations and a unified BrowserStack SDK path, including support for tools such as Storybook, Cypress, Playwright, Selenium, Puppeteer, and WebdriverIO.
- You already use BrowserStack Automate or need its configurable browser and platform combinations. BrowserStack documents configuring browser selection through its Percy integration.
- You want to try a CLI or no-script route for a static site, evaluation, or ad-hoc snapshots; BrowserStack lists these as onboarding paths in its Percy documentation.
When either could fit
If both support your stack, run a representative CI build with real stories or test flows before deciding. Compare setup effort, reviewer workload, diff noise with realistic content, the browser and version combinations you actually need, and projected usage. There is no basis here to say that either product is universally faster, more reliable, less flaky, or more accurate.

Compare the workflows and usage units
| Decision | Chromatic | Percy | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starting point | Storybook stories; also documents Vitest, Playwright, and Cypress integrations. | Percy SDK or BrowserStack SDK, a wide set of framework integrations, and CLI/no-script routes. | Are UI states already encoded as stories, or reached mainly through end-to-end flows? |
| Review unit | Component- and story-oriented workflow; Chromatic describes baselines across branches and merges. | Snapshot and build review; captures can be automatic or requested at chosen test points through the SDK. | Do reviewers need to inspect reusable component states or complete application flows? |
| Browser configuration | Lists Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge; availability varies by plan. | Uses Percy defaults or BrowserStack Automate, where browser and OS versions can be configured. | Are latest stable browsers enough, or do specific versions, devices, or platforms matter? |
| Usage unit | Billed snapshots; TurboSnap can reuse unaffected snapshots. | Screenshots; browser and responsive-width permutations count separately. | Estimate usage from stories or pages, viewports, and browsers rather than comparing headline totals. |
| Team and plan details | Its pricing page lists unlimited collaborators and parallel test runs. | The free-plan documentation lists unlimited users and projects; paid allocations and overages apply. | Check current permissions, support, retention, usage limits, and plan terms. |
Understand the pricing units before estimating cost
Chromatic’s official pricing page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists Free at $0 per month with 5,000 billed snapshots, Starter at $179 per month with 35,000 billed snapshots, and Pro at $399 per month with 85,000 billed snapshots. It also lists unlimited parallel test runs. Prices and plan inclusions can change, so verify the live page before purchase.
BrowserStack’s Percy plans documentation, accessed October 3, 2026, lists 5,000 free monthly screenshots, unlimited users, and unlimited projects for the free plan. It says paid plans allocate a fixed screenshot quantity and usage beyond the plan is treated as overage. That documentation does not give a comparable paid price.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The units are not interchangeable: BrowserStack defines a screenshot as one rendering for an individual browser and responsive width, so one Percy snapshot can include multiple screenshot permutations. Chromatic says TurboSnap tracks file changes, captures affected tests, and reuses previous snapshots for unaffected tests, which count less toward usage. Chromatic’s comparison page says Percy paid plans start at 10,000 screenshots per month and lists BrowserStack-handled pricing, but that is a competitor-authored comparison rather than a current BrowserStack quote; check BrowserStack’s live terms instead.
Check browser coverage and integration details
Chromatic’s product documentation lists Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge, with tests run in parallel; its pricing page says browser availability varies by plan. Percy documents browser choice through its defaults or BrowserStack Automate. BrowserStack’s documentation lists Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari, and explains that Automate can specify browser and OS versions. Selecting additional browsers adds separate screenshots to Percy usage.

What implementation and review involve
Chromatic with Storybook
Chromatic’s Storybook documentation describes an official addon that runs visual checks from Storybook. The first build establishes baseline snapshots; on later builds, the team reviews changes and can accept them as new baselines. Chromatic recommends using the addon during development and CI checks before merge.

Chromatic with Playwright
Chromatic also documents a Playwright integration that extends Playwright’s test and expect utilities. Its integration page says it captures page archives for cloud review and supports Playwright 1.38.0 and later. It notes that unlinked projects do not get automatic PR checks unless users wire those checks up themselves. Confirm current version requirements and repository-provider constraints during evaluation.
Percy with SDKs or CLI
Percy’s documented SDK flow is to add snapshots to tests, run builds, and review the resulting differences in Percy. Its BrowserStack SDK supports automatic or manually requested captures. BrowserStack also documents script/SDK integration and a no-script/CLI path. Check the current official Percy setup documentation for the commands and configuration that match your runner; the exact setup differs by integration.

Review is still a human decision
Both workflows depend on stable rendering and carefully selected test states. A green status only describes the captures that ran; it does not establish that the suite covered the states your users care about. Reviewers still need to accept intended design changes and investigate accidental ones.

If the requirement is to capture website pages through an API rather than compare component or test-suite baselines, try ScreenshotNeo first. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a Percy or Chromatic visual-regression replacement: a GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its clean-shot workflow accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers screenshot, page-info, and PDF tools for AI agents.
For example, this cURL request captures a page to WebP; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and parameters:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo’s free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Its plans include every feature. You can also send screenshots from Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client.
Sign up for ScreenshotNeo to get 1,000 screenshots a month free, with no card required.
Quick Recap
Questions to resolve in a trial
- Can you represent the states you need to review using stories, or must your current test flows drive the browser?
- Which browser, version, operating-system, and viewport combinations are genuinely required?
- How many captures will a representative build create after browser and responsive-width permutations?
- How much reviewer time does a normal change require, and are diffs understandable with your real content?
- Do you need automatic PR checks, and does your repository integration and plan support the workflow you expect?
