If your PC shuts down during a game, the timing points to a problem under load but does not identify a failed part. Heat, power delivery, a Windows stop error, or another unstable component can all be involved. First determine whether the computer loses power, restarts, freezes, or shows a blue screen; then check the Windows record, cooling, and system requirements before replacing anything.

First, identify what “shuts down” means

Note exactly what happens and when. Do the fans and lights go out, does Windows restart, does the display freeze, or does a blue screen with a stop code appear? Record whether it happens only in demanding games, after a similar amount of play, or after a recent hardware or software change. These differences help choose the next check; they do not diagnose a component by themselves.

  • Power cuts out: Investigate cooling and power delivery, among other possible hardware causes.
  • Windows restarts or shows a stop code: Check the event record and note any error code.
  • The system freezes: Record the symptoms and look for related errors; a freeze is not the same as a confirmed loss of power.

Check the Windows shutdown record

After Windows starts again, open Event Viewer and go to Windows Logs > System. Look for Kernel-Power, Event ID 41 around the time of the incident. Microsoft says this event is logged when Windows starts after an unexpected shutdown or restart; it confirms that the shutdown was unclean, not why it happened. Read the event details for a bug-check code and compare nearby events. A zero bug-check code can occur if power was interrupted or Windows could not finish recording error information. Microsoft’s Event ID 41 guidance explains the limits of this record.

Check cooling and airflow

With the computer off and cooled, check for blocked vents and whether fans appear to operate normally. Consider whether a recent change to the cooling setup or system configuration could have contributed. Intel lists automatic shutdown, throttling, reduced frequency, and excessive fan noise among possible overheating symptoms, and advises checking the thermal solution. It does not establish one safe temperature threshold for every CPU or GPU, so use the guidance for your specific hardware rather than a universal number. Intel’s processor overheating guidance is for systems using Intel boxed processors; if you have an OEM laptop or desktop, contact its manufacturer for service guidance.

Confirm the power supply suits the whole system

Compare the installed power supply unit (PSU) with the requirements for your complete system under load, using the specifications from the component and system makers. Intel recommends checking PSU wattage when investigating shutdowns under heavy load, and Microsoft includes an underpowered or faulty PSU among possible explanations for an unexpected shutdown. Neither point proves that your PSU is the cause or establishes a suitable wattage for a PC whose components are unknown. Check the system’s recent changes too; Microsoft recommends removing recently added hardware as a basic step when the problem began after an addition. See Intel’s random reboot and shutdown guidance and Microsoft’s stop-error troubleshooting guidance.

Use checks specific to your PC and components

Driver and hardware checks depend on the model. Intel’s guidance for gaming-triggered reboots applies specifically to systems with an Intel Arc A770. It includes checking that drivers are current, checking operating temperatures and PSU requirements, and, where appropriate, reseating the graphics card or memory and testing a minimal component configuration. It also suggests gently removing dust or dirt with a soft cloth or compressed air, and testing another graphics card if possible. Follow the relevant PC or component maker’s instructions instead for other graphics cards, OEM systems, and laptops; internal work may be unsuitable for your device or warranty. See Intel’s Arc A770 gaming-reboot steps.

When to stop troubleshooting and get help

If the shutdown continues after basic checks, ask the computer manufacturer or a qualified technician to diagnose the system. They can assess the PSU, cooling, memory, graphics card, and other components without guessing from the timing alone. For an OEM system with suspected overheating, Intel specifically recommends contacting the manufacturer. Do not open the PSU, bypass a protection feature, or repeatedly force the PC to shut down under heavy load to reproduce the problem. Keep any cleaning or component checks within your skill level and the manufacturer’s instructions.
