Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If your PC turns off while you’re playing, first identify what “turns off” means: the whole computer loses power, Windows restarts, a stop-code screen appears, or only the game closes. Those are different problems. Check the power supply against your actual components, inspect cooling and dust, then test hardware and software systematically rather than buying a replacement part on guesswork.
Identify exactly what happens
Watch the computer when the failure occurs and note what you see when you try to use it again. Microsoft says an unexpected Windows restart can be caused by hardware, a driver, or software; the symptom alone does not identify which one.
- The entire PC loses power: The screen goes dark and the computer stops running rather than returning to Windows. Check power delivery and cooling, among other possibilities.
- Windows restarts: The computer starts up again on its own. Note whether a blue or black stop-code screen appears and write down the code.
- The game closes but Windows stays running: This is not the same as a full system shutdown or Windows restart. Investigate the game, its drivers, or software conflicts rather than assuming the PSU has failed.
- The display goes blank but the PC stays on: Note whether you can hear the computer running or whether it responds. A blank display alone does not confirm that the whole system has shut down.
Also note whether the issue began after you added hardware, changed a driver, or installed software. For repeated stop-code errors, Microsoft recommends removing recently added hardware as an initial check. Microsoft’s guidance for unexpected restarts and stop-code errors covers Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Check that the power supply suits your PC
Find the PSU’s make, model, and rated capacity, then compare it with the requirements for your complete system, especially its processor and graphics card. Intel recommends checking whether the PSU can supply the platform under heavy load. A game can expose a power-delivery problem because it places sustained demand on the system, but a shutdown during gaming does not by itself prove the PSU is the cause.

There is no universal wattage recommendation in the cited support guidance. The appropriate assessment depends on the components installed and the PSU itself. Do not buy a higher-wattage unit solely because the PC shut down; confirm the system requirements or have a qualified technician test the specific hardware. Intel’s gaming-reboot guidance is specifically for systems with an Intel Arc A770, while its broader random-reboot guidance concerns Windows 10 systems built with Intel boxed processors.
Inspect cooling and dust
Check the CPU, graphics card, memory, and PSU temperatures against the limits stated by their manufacturers. Look for blocked airflow and visible dust, including around fans, vents, memory, and the graphics card. Intel notes that overheating components may trigger system shutdowns, but there is no single safe temperature cutoff that applies to every component.

If you find dust, Intel advises gently cleaning memory sticks, the graphics card, and slots with a soft cloth or compressed air. Follow the PC or component maker’s instructions, and do not treat cleaning as proof that overheating was the cause or as a guaranteed fix.
Test components before replacing anything
Intel recommends checking critical components, including the processor, RAM, PSU, and video card; trying a minimal configuration with essential parts; and reseating the RAM and graphics card. Its broader random-reboot guidance also suggests running Windows Memory Diagnostic or another available memory diagnostic and reviewing Windows event logs.

- 80 PLUS Certified – 80% efficiency under typical load. Power good signal is 100-500 millisecond
- Supports (2) PCI-E 6 plus 2pin Connectors. Active (PFC) Power Factor Correction, MTBF: 100, 000 hours
- Industry Grade Protections: (OPP) Over Power Protection, (OVP) Over Voltage Protection, (SCP) Short Circuit Protection
- Hold up time is 16 millisecond minimum within 60 percent load. Input frequency range 50 - 60 in Hz
- Run a memory diagnostic. Use Windows Memory Diagnostic or another memory test available for your system. Record any reported errors.
- Check connections and seating. If you are comfortable working inside the PC, follow the system maker’s instructions to reseat the RAM and graphics card. Shut the computer down and disconnect power before opening it.
- Test a minimal configuration. A technician can run the system with only essential components to help narrow the fault. Intel also suggests cross-testing a graphics card where possible.
- Review Windows event logs. Look for entries that coincide with the shutdown or restart and save details that could help a technician.
A failed test can help narrow the investigation; it is not a reason to replace a part without confirming the diagnosis. Follow the PC and component makers’ instructions, especially if the computer is under warranty.
Check graphics drivers and software conflicts
If the problem began after a driver or software change, investigate that change first and test again. For an Intel Arc A770, Intel advises confirming that the graphics driver is up to date. That advice is specific to its Arc A770 troubleshooting case, not a diagnosis for every gaming PC.

A Windows clean boot can help determine whether background software is interfering with an app or game. Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions for Windows 10 and Windows 11 start Windows with essential drivers and startup programs. If the game works in that environment, isolate services or startup applications systematically. A clean boot can temporarily reduce some functionality; restore normal startup after testing.

Contact the PC or system builder, or a qualified repair technician, if the shutdowns continue after these checks or the computer will not stay on. A technician can test the specific PSU, motherboard, graphics card, memory, and cooling system. Bring any stop code, relevant event-log entries, and a note of recent hardware, driver, or software changes. The observed symptom and these checks can guide diagnosis, but they do not establish which component is defective.
