Choose PC Game Pass if you expect to play several games currently in its PC catalog, value included benefits such as EA Play or day-one releases, and are comfortable paying while you play. Buy games individually if you mainly want a short list of specific titles and prefer access under each store’s license after you stop paying for a subscription. There is no universal break-even point: compare your own game list, local prices, and expected subscription months.
What you are paying for
PC Game Pass: access to a changing catalog
PC Game Pass provides access to included PC games while your subscription is active and each game remains available in the catalog. Xbox advertises 300+ PC games, day-one releases, and EA Play, but included games and benefits can change. Xbox notes that “Game titles, number, features, and availability vary over time, by region, Game Pass plan, and platform.” Check the current PC Game Pass library and plan details for your region before subscribing.
Access ends if you cancel or a title leaves the service. PC Game Pass does not include cloud gaming, according to Xbox’s Game Pass plans and FAQ; do not choose it expecting cloud play.
Individual purchases: a license tied to a storefront
Buying a game individually makes it available under the terms of the store where you buy it, rather than only while you maintain a Game Pass subscription. That is not necessarily unrestricted or perpetual ownership. Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement says, “The Content and Services are licensed, not sold.” This describes Steam’s contract language; terms can differ between storefronts.

Compare the real cost for your game list
Start with the games you actually expect to play. For a subscription, multiply the current local monthly price by the number of months you expect to remain subscribed. For individual purchases, add the current prices of those specific games, accounting for sales, editions, DLC, and any discount that actually applies. Then consider whether included benefits and continued access after cancellation matter to you.

For a US price reference, Microsoft’s listing showed PC Game Pass at $13.99 per month when checked October 7, 2026. The listing says billing continues automatically unless canceled. That is a US store price, not a global quote; check your local storefront for current pricing, promotions, and any taxes. The Microsoft PC Game Pass listing has current offer details.

When a subscription is likely to fit better
- You plan to play several games in the current catalog during the months you subscribe.
- You value included EA Play or eligible day-one releases enough to factor them into the cost.
- You are comfortable losing access to included games when you cancel or when a title leaves the catalog.
- You want to try a range of catalog games rather than pay separately for each one.
Xbox advertises up to 20% off select games in the library for PC Game Pass members buying through the Store. “Up to” and “select” are important: check the actual eligible price and compare it with other storefronts and sales. Do not assume the discount applies to every game or beats the best price elsewhere.
When buying games individually is likely to fit better
- You mainly want one or a few specific games, particularly if they are not in the current catalog.
- You expect to keep playing those titles beyond the period you would otherwise pay for a subscription.
- You prefer not to manage recurring billing or track when games may leave a catalog.
- You can wait for sales and compare the exact editions and extras you want.
Digital purchases still come with storefront terms. For example, Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement characterizes content as licensed, not sold. Do not assume that another store has identical language or rules.

Check the practical details before committing
Recurring billing and refunds
The Xbox listing says subscription billing renews automatically unless canceled. Xbox describes a refund for the most recent recurring charge if you cancel within 30 days after payment after failing to turn off recurring billing; this is limited to one use per Microsoft account per subscription product. It is not a general trial or an unlimited refund promise. Confirm the current terms on Xbox before relying on them.
Store-specific purchase refunds
Steam’s general refund policy allows requests for games within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime, subject to policy terms and exceptions. Steam’s policy page identifies its last update as April 23, 2024, so check the live Steam Refunds page before purchasing. These are Steam rules, not a standard for every PC store.

Windows and game compatibility
The PC Game Pass app baseline is Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or higher. Individual games can have higher system requirements, whether accessed through a subscription or bought separately. Check the requirement listing for each title before spending money or subscribing specifically to play it.

A simple decision process
- Write down the games you intend to play. Check whether each is currently included in PC Game Pass in your region; do not rely on a general catalog count.
- Set your time horizon. Estimate how many months you would subscribe, including months when you may play less.
- Compare current costs. Multiply the local monthly subscription price by those months, then compare it with current individual prices for the games and editions on your list.
- Adjust for what matters to you. Include an eligible member discount only when it applies, and weigh benefits such as EA Play or day-one releases against catalog turnover and access after cancellation.
- Choose the access model you can live with. Subscribe for broad, time-bounded access to games you will play now; buy specific titles when lasting access under the relevant store’s terms matters more.
