For most desktop PCs, start with cool air entering through the front or side and warm air leaving through the rear. A practical baseline is two front intake fans and one rear exhaust; add fans only when the case layout and component cooling needs give them a clear job.

How should you arrange PC case fans?

Noctua’s guidance describes a three-fan starting arrangement of two front intakes and one rear exhaust. For a four-fan arrangement, add a third front intake. Its five-fan baseline adds a top exhaust near the rear. These are manufacturer recommendations, not independent benchmarks or guarantees of particular temperatures or noise levels. Noctua notes that “There is no one-size-fits-all approach to case airflow.”

Fan count Suggested arrangement
3 Two front intake fans; one rear exhaust.
4 Three front intake fans; one rear exhaust.
5 Three front intake fans; one rear exhaust; one top exhaust near the rear.
6 or more Noctua’s example adds a front-most top intake or front-most bottom intake as a sixth fan, then adds bottom intake positions before another top exhaust. Adapt this sequence to your case and components rather than filling every mount.

These placements assume a case that supports the relevant positions and has an unobstructed path for air. Check the case manual for ventilation, fan mounts, supported sizes, and clearances before buying or installing fans. A side intake can serve the same role as a front intake in a front-to-back layout.

How do cooler type and case layout change the plan?

Air-cooled builds

A conventional tower CPU cooler generally moves air from the front of the case toward the back. Front intake and rear exhaust support that route; a top exhaust above or just behind the CPU cooler may help carry warm air out. In some air-cooled builds, a top-front intake can supply fresh air to the cooler. Avoid opposing fan streams that collide head-on: Noctua warns that turbulence can reduce cooling and create audible noise.

  • Streamlined redux edition: proven Noctua quality at an attractive price point, wide range of optional accessories (anti-vibration mounts, S-ATA adaptors, y-splitters, extension cables, etc.)

Builds with an AIO radiator

Radiator location involves a CPU-versus-GPU temperature priority. In its NL-LC1 AIO guidance, Noctua says a front or side intake radiator tends to prioritize CPU temperatures, while a top exhaust radiator tends to prioritize GPU temperatures. With a front or side intake radiator, retain a route for exhaust through the top or rear; with a top exhaust radiator, provide fresh air through front or side intake. Noctua advises against bottom radiator mounting in this guidance because the pump must not be the highest point of the liquid cooler.

Bottom-to-top or specialized cases

Bottom intake and top exhaust can suit some specialized cases. For a conventional build without a specialized layout, Noctua recommends front-to-back airflow as the usual approach. Follow the chassis design and cooler orientation rather than applying a fan pattern regardless of the case.

ARCTIC P12 Pro PST - Powerful Premium Fan, 120 mm PWM Fan, 600-3000 RPM
  • HIGH STATIC PRESSURE: Efficient even with resistance – the generated airflow easily penetrates dense radiators, narrow perforated panels and mesh structures and ensures reliable cooling
  • PWM CONTROL WITH WIDE SPEED RANGE: The speed can be progressively adjusted up to 3000 rpm via the 4-pin PWM connection – the fan stops completely at less than 5% PWM
  • PRECISE MANUFACTURING FOR MAXIMUM SMOOTH RUNNING: Minimal gaps, automatic balancing and high-precision measurement noticeably reduce vibrations – for quiet, efficient and long-lasting performance
  • SMOOTH-RUNNING FLUID DYNAMIC BEARING (FDB): The self-lubricating bearing minimizes noise during operation – ideal for quiet, efficient cooling and a long, reliable service life
  • NEW FAN BLADE DESIGN FOR MORE PERFORMANCE: The redesigned rotor blades offer an optimal balance of performance and low noise – especially efficient at low speeds

What do positive, negative, and neutral pressure mean?

These terms describe the balance between incoming and outgoing air in a ventilated case. They are not determined by fan count alone: fan speed and airflow restrictions also affect the actual balance.

Pressure Typical trade-off
Positive More air enters than leaves. Noctua says this may reduce dust and debris entering through gaps, but warm air may build up more readily.
Negative More air leaves than enters. Noctua says this can expel warm air quickly, but may draw particles through gaps and unfiltered panels.
Neutral Incoming and outgoing airflow are roughly balanced; a compromise between the two approaches.

Consider the case’s filters and openings along with your cooling priorities. If dust is a concern, positive pressure may help, but the label alone does not guarantee a clean case or a specific temperature.

CORSAIR RS120 ARGB 120mm PWM Fans – Daisy-Chain Connection – Low-Noise – Magnetic Dome Bearing – Triple Pack – Black
  • Streamlined Fan Connections: Daisy-chain multiple fans together and control them all through just one 4-pin PWM connector and one +5V ARGB connector.
  • Lighting Made Easy: Eight LEDs per fan shine bright with customisable lighting through your motherboard’s built-in ARGB control (requires compatible motherboard).
  • Precise PWM Speeds: Set your fan speeds up to 2,100 RPM while providing up to 72.8 CFM airflow to your system.
  • CORSAIR AirGuide Technology: Anti-vortex vanes direct airflow at your hottest components for concentrated cooling, pushing air in the direction you need when mounted to a radiator or heatsink.
  • High Static Pressure: RS fans work well as radiator fans with a static pressure of 2.8mm-H2O to push through obstructions.

How do you choose and orient case fans?

Use the largest fan size your case supports at each mount; larger fans can move more air at lower speeds, according to Noctua. The company identifies 120 mm and 140 mm as common sizes, but your case manual is the authority on compatibility. Noctua names its NF-A12x25 G2 and NF-A14x25 G2 as all-rounder options for many positions; this is the manufacturer’s recommendation, not an independent comparison or a reason every build needs replacement fans.

To check direction, look for arrows on the fan frame or consult its documentation. Noctua’s logo-side rule applies to its own fans: with the circular logo sticker facing you, airflow moves toward you. For intake, the sticker faces the case interior; for exhaust, it faces outward. Do not assume this rule applies to other brands.

How do you install, tune, and maintain the fans?

  1. Check fit and connections. Verify the case’s supported fan dimensions and positions, component clearances, and available headers or control options. Noctua describes screw installation and anti-vibration mounts as mounting options.
  2. Set the direction before mounting. Confirm each fan’s airflow arrows or documentation, then orient intake fans to bring outside air in and exhaust fans to move warmed air out.
  3. Keep the route clear. Route cables neatly so they do not obstruct airflow between intake and exhaust.
  4. Adjust fan curves. Configure fans to respond to hardware temperatures rather than choosing a layout by fan count alone.
  5. Clean when dust accumulates. If using compressed air, hold the fan blades still while cleaning.

How to decide whether to add another fan

Start with the airflow path and the needs of your CPU cooler, GPU, radiator, and case. Consider dust filtration, fan size and speed, noise, and whether an open mount can improve airflow without disrupting the main route. If an additional fan has no clear role, leaving the mount empty is preferable to adding airflow that works against the rest of the system.
