Brute force is the broad practice of trying passwords to gain access. Password spraying spreads a small number of common-password guesses across many accounts. Credential stuffing replays username-and-password pairs already exposed elsewhere, relying on people reusing passwords. The key distinctions are what the attacker knows, how attempts are distributed, and whether the passwords are guesses or previously exposed credentials.

How the three attack patterns differ

OWASP and CISA describe related forms of password-based attacks, but the labels point to different patterns. Brute force describes password guessing broadly; spraying describes how guesses are distributed across accounts; stuffing describes the use of credentials obtained from another compromise. OWASP places spraying and stuffing within the broader family of password-related brute-force attacks, so the labels are related rather than perfectly separate categories.

Attack What the attacker starts with Attempt pattern Why it may work
Brute force (password guessing) A target account or accounts and candidate passwords Multiple password guesses against an account; broader attempts may be distributed across accounts or sources A password may be weak or guessable, especially where protective controls are inadequate
Password spraying A list of accounts and a short list of common passwords One or a few password guesses are tried against many accounts, often with attempts limited or spaced out per account Controls focused only on repeated failures against one account may not detect the pattern promptly
Credential stuffing Username-and-password pairs exposed in a breach or other compromise Previously known pairs are submitted to other services, often at scale A pair that works on one service may work elsewhere if the user reused the password

Brute force: guessing passwords

In its narrower, direct form, brute force means trying multiple candidate passwords against a target account. CISA describes repeated password guesses aimed at finding valid credentials; OWASP describes testing multiple passwords from a dictionary or another source against one account. The defining feature is that the attacker is testing guesses, not simply replaying a known pair from another breach.

Password spraying: a few guesses across many accounts

Instead of making many attempts against one account, a password-spray attack tries one or a small number of commonly used passwords against a larger list of known usernames. CISA notes that attempts are typically limited per account to reduce the risk of lockout or detection. A low failure count on any one account therefore does not rule out a broader attack.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Credential stuffing: replaying exposed pairs

Credential stuffing uses username-and-password pairs obtained from a breach or other compromise of one system and tests them on another service. The attacker is betting on credential reuse, not necessarily guessing the password. A login record may show a failed or successful authentication, but it generally cannot establish by itself where a submitted pair came from.

How to distinguish them in authentication logs

Look for patterns across accounts, source addresses, and time rather than treating one signal as proof. OWASP’s Logging Cheat Sheet covers authentication-event logging; its Credential Stuffing Prevention Cheat Sheet also recommends layered defenses.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
  • Repeated failures concentrated on one account can be a clue of direct password guessing.
  • A small number of similar failures spread across many accounts can be a clue of password spraying.
  • Use of known exposed username-and-password pairs across services is the defining credential-stuffing pattern, although ordinary login telemetry may not reveal the pairs’ source.
  • Many sources or changing traffic patterns can obscure all three. Per-IP limits alone may miss distributed attempts; correlate failures by account and time as well as source address, and monitor aggregate volume.

These are investigation clues, not definitive classifications. An attacker can vary usernames, passwords, timing, and source addresses, or combine methods. Review the whole pattern and corroborating evidence before assigning a type.

Which defenses help, and where controls differ

Some protections apply across all three patterns, while others reduce a specific weakness. OWASP recommends defense in depth rather than relying on one control. CISA’s Identity and Access Management: Recommended Best Practices for Administrators discusses MFA, including hardware tokens, as protection against password-based compromise.

  • Travel Must-Have for People On the Go: A must-have travel accessory for flights, flying, airports, air travel, airplanes, planes, international trips, cruises, and long travel days. Key gadget for your airport haul, travel accessories and must-haves.
  • Require multifactor authentication (MFA). A second factor means a password alone is insufficient to complete sign-in, whether it was guessed, sprayed, or reused from a breach.
  • Limit password reuse. Unique passwords reduce the chance that a credential exposed on one service will work on another. A password manager can help people generate and maintain distinct credentials.
  • Screen new passwords. Block commonly used or known-compromised passwords where appropriate, so users are less likely to choose credentials that are easy to guess or widely exposed.
  • Use layered, account-aware rate limits and monitoring. Consider account, source, time, and aggregate activity. A per-account threshold alone can miss a spray, while a per-IP threshold can be bypassed by distributed traffic.

Account lockouts can impede repeated guessing, but an overly aggressive lockout policy can prevent legitimate users from signing in and may let an attacker cause denial of service by deliberately triggering lockouts. Set controls in context and pair them with monitoring and recovery processes rather than treating lockout as a complete defense.
