There is no confirmed painting recipe that guarantees a sale in Passpartout: The Starving Artist. The developer’s practical advice is to try different styles and learn from customer responses. Change one element at a time—such as color, subject, detail, or brushwork—so you can tell which experiments are helping.
How to improve your chances of a sale
- Notice who is looking at your work. Treat each customer’s reaction as feedback about that painting, not proof of a universal rule.
- Make a deliberate variation. Change one feature—palette, subject, detail, or stroke energy—while keeping the others similar. This is a practical way to apply the developer’s advice to experiment with different styles; it is not a documented game scoring mechanic.
- Watch what happens next. Note whether the customer responds differently, then keep testing rather than repeating a rejected approach unchanged.
The developer’s Steam FAQ recommends experimenting with different painting styles to find what customers want. It does not publish a complete preference chart or a guaranteed formula.
Customer style ideas to test
The following suggestions come from player guides and discussion, not confirmed developer rules. Use them as starting points for experiments, not as promises that a particular buyer will accept a painting.

How to make progress between acts
A player guide describes impressing the Punk Girlies in Act 1 as its route toward Act 2, where it says minimalist customers appear. It also recommends building savings before Act 3 and turning down extremely low offers. Those are the guide author’s experience-based suggestions, not verified economic rules or guaranteed progression requirements.
The developer’s FAQ says the game has multiple endings and that you can continue replaying an act by declining the transition offer. That gives you room to keep experimenting instead of treating one offer as the only possible route forward.

Do you need a drawing tablet?
No tablet is established as a requirement. The game is a painting simulation, and the developer’s FAQ says most Wacom tablets have been confirmed to work after manual configuration changes. The FAQ does not confirm support for other brands, so check the game’s current support information if you are considering a different tablet.
