Pasquale Pistorio led SGS and STMicroelectronics for about 25 years before handing the president and CEO roles to Carlo Bozotti in 2005. In an interview published by EE Times on March 25, 2005, he described how he helped turn a struggling national company into a global semiconductor business—and why he believed technology leadership carried social responsibilities as well as commercial ones.
Who was Pasquale Pistorio?
Pasquale Pistorio was an Italian semiconductor executive best known for leading SGS, the company that became SGS-Thomson and later STMicroelectronics. He studied electrical engineering at Turin Polytechnic, specializing in weak currents, and initially hoped to work in research and development. Instead, an unexpected job offer took him into sales at Motorola.
He recalled starting by reading the Motorola catalogue and visiting customers by bicycle or tram because he did not yet have a driving licence. He later joined Motorola’s Milan office, then moved to SGS. By the time of the 2005 interview, he had spent about a quarter-century leading the company and its successors. He had overseen the SGS-Thomson merger and ST’s 1994 listings on the New York Stock Exchange and Paris Bourse.
In 2005, Pistorio handed the president and CEO positions to Carlo Bozotti and became honorary chairman.

How did Pistorio describe ST’s turnaround?
Pistorio called the transformation of SGS his biggest success. When he took charge in 1980, SGS had annual sales of $100 million, according to the 2005 EE Times interview. He said the company had lost between 20% and 50% of sales over the preceding decade. By the time of the interview, he described ST as having approximately $10 billion in sales, no debt, and ten consecutive years of systematic profitability. These are historical figures as he presented them in 2005, not current company metrics.
He regarded the merger with Thomson as the right strategic move because it took the business beyond a purely national scale. In his account, competing globally required more than improving a single company: it required combining capabilities and expanding the market the company could address. He also acknowledged a significant mistake—insufficient penetration of Japan.

What did he think held European electronics back?
Pistorio attributed Europe’s earlier weakness in electronics to several linked problems: a preference for national champions, a weak indigenous electronics industry, too little competitive pressure, management shortcomings, and insufficient attention to manufacturing and marketing. The issue, in his view, was not simply a lack of technical talent. Fragmented national markets and limited industrial scale made it harder for European firms to compete.
He saw the common market and European Union context as helping companies cooperate across borders. He cited initiatives including JESSI, MEDEA, and MEDEA Plus as examples of that cooperation. His broader point was that a European semiconductor industry needed shared scale and coordination rather than isolated national efforts.

What strategy did ST adopt after the 2001–2003 downturn?
Pistorio described three responses after the industry slump. They were strategic choices he discussed in 2005, rather than general prescriptions or current ST targets.
- Shift manufacturing toward Asia. ST moved the balance of its manufacturing footprint toward Asia, reflecting the changing geography of the semiconductor business.
- Increase research and development investment. He said R&D rose to 17.5% of sales. That figure is his account of the company’s response during that period.
- Broaden the customer base. ST sought to rely less on its top 50 original-equipment-manufacturer customers and 12 strategic partners by reaching a wider set of customers.
Together, these moves addressed different risks: where products were made, how much the company invested in future technology, and how concentrated its customer relationships were.

How did he think about market share and the industry’s future?
Pistorio argued that a company’s ranking mattered less than its market share. In the interview, he discussed ST’s goal of exceeding 5% of the world semiconductor market by 2007. That was a historical target, not a current forecast or measure of ST’s present position. He noted that the plan was complicated by the 2001 downturn, currency effects, and competition from Asia.
He also framed semiconductors as a foundational technology for a knowledge-based society. As he put it, “Microelectronics is doing for the brain what the steam engine and electric motor did for our muscles.” The comparison captures his view that semiconductors were not merely components in products; they amplified human capacity and enabled wider economic and social change.

Why did he connect technology leadership with social responsibility?
Pistorio linked technological progress to responsibilities that extended beyond a company’s performance. He pointed to inequality, pollution, population growth, and the digital divide as challenges that business and technology leaders should take seriously. His position was that commercial leadership and social responsibility should be pursued together, not treated as competing concerns.
That view also shaped his advice to people beginning technology careers. His concise counsel was: “Be determined. Persevere.” He added that professionals should reconcile their responsibilities at work with their responsibilities to society.
What recognition did Pistorio receive later?
In a 2011 profile, IEEE TV described Pistorio as a pioneer in global European microelectronics development and recorded his receipt of the 2011 IEEE Robert N. Noyce Medal. The recognition came after his transition to honorary chairman and reflected his influence on the development of the European semiconductor industry.
