To practice parries, dodges, and counterattacks, isolate one enemy and one attack, learn the animation or sound that signals impact, then make one deliberate defensive input and repeat it until you can land 10 clean reps in a row. Add a single planned punish only after the defense is consistent. The goal is not faster reflexes: it is reading the attack, choosing the right defense, and pressing at the right moment. The timing and reward differ by game, so a souls-like riposte drill is not the same as Sekiro deflection practice or a Street Fighter 6 Perfect Parry read.

What are parries, dodges, and counterattacks?

A parry is a timed block, deflection, or clash that must overlap an incoming attack. A successful one usually prevents damage and staggers the attacker, damages posture, or opens a punish. Games may call it a Perfect Guard, deflect, Drive Parry, Perfect Counter, or Perfect Block; the core skill is the same: recognize the tell, wait for the contact beat, then press once.

A dodge uses a short invulnerability window—often called i-frames—to avoid a hit while repositioning. Direction matters: rolling into the path of a sweep can still get you hit. A counterattack is the reward after a successful read: a riposte, Deathblow, combo, or built-in counter animation. If you have no follow-up planned, you may waste the opening your defense created.

“A parry is not a reflex test — it is a reading test,” wrote AOP3D Tech in a 2026 timing guide. That framing is useful: learn a specific attack’s rhythm rather than trying to react to every weapon swing at the last possible instant.

How do I practice parries without guessing?

Practice like a small laboratory: one opponent, one attack, one defensive input, and no damage dealing until the timing becomes repeatable. Start with a weak enemy or training dummy, and aim for 10 clean reps in a row before adding a punish or moving to a harder encounter.

  1. Pause. Stop attacking and stop mashing. Guard, strafe, or create enough space to observe the attack safely.
  2. Read. Watch one complete attack cycle before trying to parry. Pick one tell you can identify reliably: a shoulder dip, a planted foot, a hand drawing back, a pause at the top of a swing, or a grunt.
  3. Name the cue. Say it aloud—“foot lands,” “arm releases,” or “grunt”—so you focus on one signal instead of the whole animation.
  4. Go once. Press the parry button once in time with the hit. Do not hold it or press repeatedly unless the game specifically calls for a held defense.
  5. Repeat the same attack. Reset the enemy and continue until you land 10 parries in a row. Ignore damage dealt; the drill is about making the defensive input automatic.
  6. Add one punish. After a successful defense, use one planned follow-up, then return to the drill. Do not turn the practice loop into a string of attacks.

When the visual animation makes you panic, try parry-on-sound: listen for the swoosh, shout, or impact cue and time the press to that instead. If the game allows it, lower background music during practice. This separates the attack’s rhythm from the visual noise of a weapon moving across the screen.

Once a single hit is reliable, watch a full combo without attacking. Then practice the last hit of the string first. Its rhythm is easier to recognize after the preceding attacks, and the end of a sequence often gives you a clearer opportunity to punish. Add earlier hits only after the ending is consistent.

A 10-minute session

  • Minutes 1–3: Observe. Watch attacks, take a hit if necessary, and name the tell. Do not try to win the encounter yet.
  • Minutes 4–6: Defend only. Parry or deflect the chosen attack. Count clean successes rather than damage.
  • Minutes 7–8: Add a punish. After a successful defense, use one hit or the game’s intended counter, then reset.
  • Minutes 9–10: Apply it live. Fight normally, but count clean parries. If your timing falls apart, return to the isolated drill.

A useful rule is that two quick presses usually mean you were guessing. Commit to one press, observe the result, and adjust the next attempt. Ambar Jimenez wrote for xboxplay.games in 2025 that “Successful parrying is based on prediction and rhythm, not pure reaction.”

Why do I keep missing parries?

Most misses come from pressing at the wrong point in the attack, not from having slow reflexes. Parry animations have startup, active frames, and recovery: the move is not ready during startup, only catches an attack during its active window, and may leave you vulnerable if it misses.

  • You press during the wind-up. The parry has not become active yet. Wait for a later cue such as the hand releasing, a foot planting, or the weapon beginning its final arc.
  • You react to the swing instead of predicting contact. A fast attack may already be inside its parry window by the time the full swing is obvious. Learn the specific animation’s rhythm and anticipate the release.
  • You mash. A missed parry can still be in recovery when the real attack arrives. In Sekiro, repeated early inputs can also reduce the available deflect timing; a 2023 DSAnimStudio analysis found the main deflect window at frames 1–12, followed by block frames 13–36 at 60 fps. Those are datamined figures, not official FromSoftware frame data.
  • You chose a move that cannot be parried. Grabs, many breaths and shockwaves, and certain large or unusual attacks require a dodge, space, or a special skill instead.
  • Your distance is wrong. Too far away and the attack may not reach your parry hitbox. Too close can make grabs or unusual active hitboxes difficult to avoid.

Use the result to diagnose the mistake. A full hit often means you pressed too early and were still in startup. A partial block or chip damage can indicate that the parry was late. If the input never connected with the attack, check distance or whether the move is parriable before changing your timing.

After each miss, ask: Was I early, late, or using the wrong defense? Change one thing on the next attempt, not several at once. A recording or slowed playback can help reveal a brief foot plant, weapon angle, flash, or sound that is difficult to notice at full speed. Do not confuse that playback analysis with the timing you must use in the live fight: return to full speed once you have identified the cue.

How do I deal with delayed attacks?

When an enemy pauses after its wind-up, wait through the hold. Developers often use delayed releases to catch players who parry or dodge as soon as they see the initial motion. Watch the attack’s release, not the first sign that it is coming.

Try these cues if the attack keeps baiting an early press:

  • Planted foot: the step may land just before the strike. Treat the landing as the cue, not the start of the step.
  • Counted steps: some attacks have a repeatable number of steps before impact. This only helps when your distance is consistent.
  • Limb or weapon angle: notice a repeatable position, such as an elbow passing above the head or a weapon disappearing behind the body.
  • Animation keyframe: use a recording to find a distinctive point in the movement, such as a weapon tip reaching a particular position.
  • Hidden countdown: an effect may clear before the attacker releases, or repeated sparks may mark the sequence.
  • Audio pop or grunt: lower music if needed, then use the sound as your timing signal.

Most importantly, stop attacking while you learn the delay. Many games do not let you cancel an attack after pressing the button. If you are locked into your own animation when the delayed hit arrives, you may know the timing and still be unable to defend.

When should I parry, dodge, or block?

Parry when the move is parriable and its timing is familiar; dodge when the attack is unblockable, covers an area, or needs you to move out of its path; block when you are uncertain and a failed parry would be more costly. Mastery includes knowing when not to parry.

Situation Default choice Reason
One telegraphed melee attack from a humanoid Parry or deflect It can create a stagger, posture damage, riposte, or other counter opportunity.
The final hit of a familiar string Parry The earlier attacks establish the rhythm; the final hit can be easier to anticipate.
Red glint, labeled unblockable, grab, or shockwave Dodge or create space The parry may be invalid. Move across or behind the attacker when the hitbox allows it.
Unfamiliar multi-hit attack, low stamina, or high posture pressure Block or reposition A failed parry can expose you to the rest of the sequence.
Large enemy, two-handed colossal weapon, flail, or ranged attack in a souls-like Dodge or use a specific skill These attacks are often not parriable.
Fighting-game pressure or an expected attack Drive Parry or a Perfect Parry read A held Drive Parry can cover a longer interval, while Perfect Parry demands precise timing.
A delayed attack that has already baited an early input Wait for the secondary cue The hold is designed to punish pressing on the first wind-up.

A parry is a high-reward choice, not a universal defense. A dodge can be safer but requires the right direction; a block is often more forgiving but may cost stamina or build posture pressure. If the enemy is unknown, a block or a step out of range can buy time to read the move before committing.

How does parry timing differ by game genre?

The same reading skill serves different combat systems, but the timing goal changes: souls-likes reward prediction into a riposte, Sekiro-style games make deflection part of a continuing rhythm, and fighting games turn a Perfect Parry into a high-risk read with published frame data.

Souls-likes: predict a humanoid swing, then riposte

In Dark Souls and Elden Ring, practice on a slow, telegraphed humanoid rather than a boss with unfamiliar moves. Small shields and parry daggers are commonly used for parrying; tower shields are not the default choice for this drill. In Elden Ring, the woods outside Groveside Cave provide Godrick Soldiers for practice, and the Buckler is an early option. Fextralife’s dedicated Buckler Parry page lists 4 startup frames and 5 parry frames at 30 fps; its comparison-page millisecond notes list 133 ms of delay and 167 ms of duration. The comparison table’s integer columns differ, so treat the dedicated-page frame counts and corresponding millisecond notes as the clearer figures, not as a universal timing rule.

Fextralife’s 2026 Parrying page describes Carian Retaliation as having a 4-frame delay, 6-frame duration, and 13-frame recovery at 30 fps, and calls it the longest-duration parry skill in that comparison. That page’s Buckler comparison also lists 400 ms of recovery and notes that Patch 1.12 changed several parry hitbox speeds and Buckler recovery. Patch changes matter: check current in-game behavior rather than assuming a timing guide from another patch applies exactly.

For the drill, watch the hand holding the weapon rather than tracking only the weapon tip; Fextralife recommends the hand as a more reliable cue. A parry-only run, where damage comes from criticals, can make you practice the defense instead of falling back on attacks. Some bosses require multiple parries before a critical opening appears, and the parry counter does not decay while you wait. Do not treat every enemy as a parry target: trolls, golems, many two-handed colossal attacks, flails, whips, shields, perfume bottles, and ranged attacks are examples to avoid unless a specific skill changes the interaction. Jumping PvP attacks can also be unparriable.

Sekiro and precision-deflection games: keep the rhythm going

In Sekiro, deflection is not just a way to create one opening; repeated deflections build posture pressure. Stay engaged through the string and keep reading the next attack instead of interrupting the sequence with panic attacks. Use an early swordsman or the Mikiri/deflect training dummy to isolate a move.

A 2023 DSAnimStudio analysis puts Sekiro’s main deflect at frames 1–12, followed by block frames 13–36 at 60 fps. FromSoftware has not published those figures as official frame data. The practical lesson is more durable than the exact numbers: repeated, hurried inputs can undermine the active deflection window. Deflect the committed attacks in rhythm, then use the Deathblow when posture breaks. Similar practice principles apply to games such as Metal Gear Rising and Nine Sols, though their combat systems and cues are not identical.

Street Fighter 6: treat Perfect Parry as a read

Street Fighter 6’s Drive Parry and Perfect Parry are fighting-game mechanics with narrow timing and punish risks. Capcom’s official frame-data notes describe Perfect Parry as absorbing an attack on the input frame or the next frame—a two-frame window. For high and overhead attacks, the direction is away from the opponent; for lows, it is down and back. With no direction input, the result is a regular parry plus 3,000 Drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Capcom’s published data lists Drive Parry as starting on frame 1, with parry hitboxes on frames 1–12 and 33 frames of recovery. Holding the input extends the parry hitbox, but recovery still matters: during recovery, you can only block. A whiff that is hit or thrown can leave you in Punish Counter. Perfect Parry on a strike has one frame of recovery, but the punish is constrained: the starter has 50% scaling, the combo takes a 20% Super Gauge penalty and a 50% Drive gain/damage penalty, and the opponent cannot cancel. The move is not simply a free full-damage combo. Projectile Perfect Parry has roughly 10–11 frames of recovery and no screen freeze, according to Capcom’s data.

Use training mode with a dummy repeating one attack. Learn the correct block direction and the attack’s timing before trying to Perfect Parry it in a match. At high levels, option-select inputs may parry an attack while remaining safe if the opponent does not attack, but that is a separate, advanced technique—not a substitute for learning the basic read. Seasonal updates can change frame data, so the live Capcom page is the reference for the current version.

Action-adventure and color-cue games: let the cue choose the tool

In action-adventure games such as Zelda, Jedi: Fallen Order, and Sifu, parries may be more forgiving or function as a stun and Structure-building tool. Dodges serve a distinct purpose, especially when several enemies surround you. Practice the game’s specific response rather than assuming every parry has a souls-like riposte.

In Ghost of Yotei’s cue system, blue indicates a parry, red indicates a dodge or precise dodge, and gold signals a disarm opportunity. Glints tell you which defense to use, not the exact frame to press. GamePulse community timing tests from October 2025 estimate the Perfect Counter window at about 0.10–0.15 seconds, or 6–9 frames at 60 fps; Sucker Punch has not published official frame data. Use the slow-motion confirmation as feedback: if it does not appear, the parry may have been early. Custom Difficulty’s Timing Windows slider can be set to Lenient for practice and later moved to Strict; the Armor of the Undying is also cited as extending Perfect Parry and Dodge windows while learning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a color-cue drill, practice ten blue perfects in a row, resetting the count after a miss. Then practice red attacks separately: sidestep, roll, and late roll while ensuring the hitbox passes behind your back shoulder. Add mixed strings after each defense is stable. A five-day progression works well: blue parries, red dodges, mixed strings, a special interaction such as a disarm or Mikiri, then a strict-window sprint and live duel. GamePulse’s suggested benchmark is 10 consecutive blue Perfect Counters and 10 red dodges without chip before lethal-difficulty duels.

Phantom Blade Zero’s field-guide advice is to tap parry as the attack lands rather than holding it, use the perfect spark as confirmation, and protect the Sha-Chi resource. Its fully upgraded reflex device is described by a 2026 combat-tips video as increasing dodge and parry windows by 25%; that is a source-reported figure, not a general timing standard. Retail timing details are flagged as unverified by the field guide, so treat the drill as more dependable than any unconfirmed window estimate.

Character-action games: learn the clash and follow-up

Ninja Gaiden 4 layers clash parries, perfect parries, perfect blocks, and perfect dodges. Start on slower armored enemies and learn the timing of one committed attack. A useful restriction drill is to avoid dodging for a few encounters and use only block and parry, so you must learn the defensive cues. When a successful parry creates a flash or prompt, use the indicated heavy or Fatal Flash-style follow-up rather than mashing. Some transformation counters spend a gauge, so save them for enemies where that resource is worth the cost. The exact skill names in secondary coverage should not be treated as a substitute for the game’s own prompts.

How do I turn a successful defense into a counterattack?

Plan the punish before the defense succeeds. Use the game’s intended follow-up promptly, then return to defense instead of assuming every opening allows a long combo.

  • Dark Souls and Elden Ring: move to the front and use a light attack for the riposte. The critical window is usually generous, but do not delay. In Elden Ring, criticals also grant extra invulnerability frames that can help in a crowd.
  • Sekiro: keep deflecting through the sequence until posture breaks, then perform the Deathblow. Attacking wildly in the middle of a string can disrupt the rhythm.
  • Street Fighter 6: choose a punish that accounts for Perfect Parry’s scaling and resource penalties. A successful parry creates an opportunity, not an unlimited-damage combo.
  • Ghost of Yotei: wait for the slow-motion confirmation, then let the built-in counter play out. No confirmation suggests the parry did not land as a perfect counter.
  • Ninja Gaiden 4: watch for the follow-up prompt or flash and use the indicated attack. Consider the gauge cost before spending a transformation counter.
  • Phantom Blade Zero: use a stagger opening to spend Sha-Chi on a charged or L2 tool rather than assuming every pause is a full combo window.

What settings or hardware can affect timing?

Display and input lag can make a narrow timing window harder to perceive, but they do not replace the need to learn the attack. If a timing cue seems inconsistent between scenes, enable the display’s Game or Low-Latency mode and disable motion smoothing. AOP3D also recommends adjusting controller deadzones so an input registers when it feels like it should.

Online fighting games add network delay, so waiting until the hit is visually obvious can be too late; practice a pre-timed read of the opponent’s likely action. NVIDIA Reflex is a PC latency-reduction feature that requires a compatible NVIDIA GPU, but no sourced measurement here establishes a specific millisecond improvement for parrying on a particular monitor. Treat low-latency settings as conditions that may help input response, not as a substitute for the 10-rep practice loop.

Which games are useful for learning these skills?

The best practice game depends on which part of defense you want to learn. FandomWire’s October 2026 satisfying-parry ranking places Sekiro first, followed by Street Fighter 6 and Elden Ring; the list below combines that ranking with the specific practice features described in the available data.

  1. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice: the deflection loop is central to combat, and posture breaks lead to Deathblows. A strong pick if you want sustained deflection practice.
  2. Street Fighter 6: official Drive Parry and Perfect Parry frame data, plus a training-mode dummy, make it useful for practicing precise reads.
  3. Elden Ring: Godrick Soldiers provide a repeatable early drill, and the Buckler offers a defined parry option. You also need to learn which attacks call for a dodge instead.
  4. Ghost of Yotei: blue, red, and gold cues, a dojo, a Timing Windows setting, and slow-motion Perfect Counter feedback help structure practice.
  5. Lies of P: Perfect Guard can damage enemy weapons and build Structure, giving a different reward from a conventional riposte.
  6. Sifu: parries build Structure and can create cinematic takedowns; dodging remains useful against groups.
  7. Nine Sols: a 2D action game described by its vendor as Sekiro-inspired, offering a different view of deflection rhythm.
  8. Onimusha: Way of the Sword: FandomWire ranks it among the strongest parry-focused games; its launch-day sales claim is also FandomWire’s, not an audited Capcom figure.
  9. Ninja Gaiden 4: mixes clash, parry, block, dodge, and prompted follow-ups.
  10. Phantom Blade Zero: uses color cues and tap-not-hold parry guidance, with a reflex-device option described as widening timing windows.

Other useful examples include Dark Souls, Metal Gear Rising, Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, Jedi: Fallen Order, and Zelda. A game is useful as a trainer when it lets you repeat a cue, gives clear feedback about success, and provides a safe way to practice the follow-up—not simply because it has a parry button.

How we chose the practice games

The selection prioritizes repeatable attacks or training tools, clear confirmation of a successful defense, and a meaningful counter or posture reward. The order follows FandomWire’s October 2026 satisfying-parry ranking where applicable, with practice utility used to explain why each game can help. This is a criteria-based list, not a performance test or a claim that every game teaches the same timing skill.

What is the simplest routine to keep improving?

Pick one timing-dependent move and drill it for 10 minutes at the start of each session for two weeks. Use a metronome on-beat and then off-beat if it helps with rhythm, but return to the in-game animation and audio cues rather than substituting an external rhythm for the enemy’s tell.

  1. Choose one enemy and one attack.
  2. Observe a complete cycle and identify one visual or audio cue.
  3. Make one parry or dodge input; never mash to cover uncertainty.
  4. Count clean successes toward 10 in a row.
  5. Review misses as early, late, or wrong defense, and change one variable.
  6. Add a single planned punish, then test the skill in a real encounter.

Optional rhythm games such as osu! or Geometry Dash can build general timing practice, but they do not teach a particular game’s parry window. The enemy’s own animation, sound, spacing, and current patch remain the relevant source of truth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a higher frame rate change the parry window?

Frame counts and real-time duration are related: the Elden Ring Buckler figures in the available data are listed at 30 fps, with the frame values doubled at 60 fps. Do not assume every title scales identically; use the game-specific data and remember that animation, display, and input response can affect what timing feels like.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use a rhythm game to get better at parrying?

A rhythm game can help you practice keeping a beat, but it cannot teach a specific enemy’s delay, spacing, or release cue. Treat it as optional general timing work, then do the actual repetitions against the move you want to learn.

What does a partial parry mean?

A partial parry commonly indicates that you were slightly late: you may take reduced damage or extra stamina chip instead of getting the full deflection reward. Confirm that the attack is parriable and your range is correct before assuming timing is the only problem.
