Paperman is a macOS and Windows app that lays a paper-like texture over your laptop display. It can give text-heavy work a softer, less uniformly glossy look, but it does not turn the screen into paper or e-ink—and any comfort or focus benefit remains unproven for the app itself.
What Paperman does to your screen
Paperman, made by DoublOne, adds a selectable visual texture over the content already displayed. You can adjust the texture and its intensity, pause the effect, exclude particular apps, and choose which monitors it affects. The result is a screen effect, not a change to the laptop’s panel or its physical surface. Paperman’s official product page describes the available controls; WIRED’s September 23, 2026 hands-on account reports that the texture can also appear over images, video, and some games.
That broad coverage is useful to understand before enabling it: an effect that suits an article or document may be distracting when viewing photos, editing color, or playing a game. App exclusions and shortcuts can help restore an unfiltered view when needed.
Who may find the paper-like effect useful?
Paperman is aimed at reading, writing, and other text-heavy work. Its texture changes the visual character of the display, which some people may prefer to a perfectly uniform screen. WIRED reviewer Justin Pot said, “I really do like what the texture adds to both reading and writing.” That is a personal impression, not evidence that the app improves everyone’s comfort or productivity.

DoublOne’s co-founder Zoé Kilperti described the idea as “a design hypothesis rather than something backed by science,” as quoted by WIRED. The developer offers ergonomic reasoning about contrast and highlights, and its product page cites work on related display and reading topics. Those references do not establish that Paperman itself reduces eye strain or improves focus: no independent controlled evaluation of the app was located for this article.
How Paperman differs from f.lux or Night Shift
Paperman’s defining effect is a texture overlay. The product information here does not establish that it is a color-temperature adjustment tool like the familiar warm-screen modes associated with f.lux or Night Shift. Nor does the available information specify an exact color shift or guarantee that every color remains unchanged. Since the texture can cover images and video as well as text, check its appearance on the content you actually use and disable or exclude it when accurate color matters.

Using Paperman with multiple monitors
The developer says users can choose which monitors receive the effect. That lets you limit the texture to a reading display rather than applying it everywhere, though exact setup steps can vary with the app version and operating system. Confirm the monitor selection in Paperman’s controls after connecting or disconnecting a display.
System support, downloads, and price
The developer lists downloads for macOS and Windows. Apple’s US Mac App Store listing requires macOS 12 or later. Windows is free to download with one hour of daily use in the free tier, according to the developer’s page at the time checked. Listed paid prices differ by route: the developer showed a $11.99 lifetime Windows upgrade, Apple’s US App Store showed $8.99, and WIRED reported $12 for macOS and Windows on September 23, 2026. These are route-specific listings, not a single universal price; check the developer’s page and the relevant US App Store listing before buying. WIRED and the developer also mention Setapp as an access route, but availability and terms should be verified directly.

Paperman versus a physical matte screen protector
A matte protector is a hardware accessory category to consider if you want a physical surface treatment rather than a reversible software overlay. No particular protector was tested here, so fit and optical results depend on the product and laptop.
| Consideration | Paperman | Physical matte protector |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Software texture over displayed content | A film applied to the screen; finish and optical behavior vary by product |
| Reversibility | Pause or disable the effect in software | Requires removing the film to return to the bare surface |
| Where it applies | Can be adjusted by app and selected monitor, according to the developer | Covers the physical screen rather than selected apps; product-specific details vary |
| Setup | Install the app and configure its controls | Check dimensions and compatibility, then install the film; fit and installation method are product-specific |
| Color-sensitive work | Texture may cover images and video; turn it off or exclude apps where needed | Optical changes depend on the specific protector; verify suitability for your work before purchase |
Will Paperman slow down a computer?
The available product information and hands-on account do not provide a measured performance impact, so a definite claim about speed or battery life is not established. If you notice a change on your own system, pause Paperman and compare the same workload with the overlay off; also check whether the effect is active on displays or apps where you do not need it.
