It is most compelling for filmmakers who value codec and recording flexibility and can work around contrast-detect autofocus, modest low-light performance, shorter battery life and the cost of suitable media. It is not Panasonic’s latest flagship: the GH7 adds phase-detection autofocus and internal ProRes RAW HQ.
What the GH6 offers
Panasonic specifies a 25.21-megapixel effective-resolution Live MOS sensor measuring 17.3 × 13.0 mm, with a Micro Four Thirds mount. Still images can be recorded as JPEG or RAW. Video formats include MOV with H.264, H.265/HEVC or Apple ProRes, and MP4 with H.264 or H.265/HEVC. Panasonic’s GH6 specifications list the camera’s modes and formats.
The headline is the breadth of internal video options. Panasonic lists 4:2:2 10-bit C4K/4K at 60p, 5.7K 60p at 4:2:0 10-bit, and 5.8K 30p at 4:2:0 10-bit in 4:3 anamorphic mode. The US product listing also identifies C4K/4K 10-bit 120p high-frame-rate recording with audio. Available combinations depend on recording-quality settings and system frequency, so check Panasonic’s mode table for the exact format you intend to use rather than assuming every resolution, frame rate and bit depth can be combined. Recording formats, cards and cooling
ProRes and card planning
Panasonic’s February 2022 launch announcement described internal 5.7K 30p Apple ProRes 422 HQ and 422 recording as a first for the LUMIX series. The company links this workflow to CFexpress Type B media and says it can facilitate nonlinear editing without transcoding; actual editing performance depends on the computer and software. Panasonic UK launch announcement
The first card slot accepts CFexpress Type B; the second supports SD, SDHC and SDXC, including UHS-II V90 cards. Panasonic links internal ProRes recording to CFexpress Type B. Do not assume that any SD card—or any particular card capacity—will support every high-bitrate mode: verify Panasonic’s mode-specific media requirements before buying. GH6 operating instructions

What “unlimited recording” means
The GH6 has a cooling fan, and Panasonic advertises unlimited recording in supported modes under specified operating conditions. Its US product page gives a recommended ambient range of -10°F to 104°F for the unlimited 4:2:2 10-bit C4K/4K 60p claim. Panasonic’s launch notice also qualifies recording duration by operating environment, battery and recording media. Treat “unlimited” as a thermal capability claim within those conditions, not a promise that a camera will record indefinitely regardless of power, card capacity or temperature. How it performs in practice
Autofocus is the main video compromise
The GH6 uses Panasonic’s contrast-detect Depth-from-Defocus (DFD) autofocus. DPReview’s hands-on coverage observed that autofocus could produce distracting wobbles or flutters. That is a meaningful concern for moving subjects, interviews with changing distance, or shots where visible focus correction would distract; it is not evidence that autofocus fails in every situation. For critical work, manual focus and planned focus pulls remain useful options. DPReview GH6 hands-on review

Image quality, low light and stabilization
DPReview’s full review found video image quality strong in several respects, including dynamic range, sharpness and rolling shutter, while noting that low-light performance is limited by the smaller sensor relative to larger-sensor cameras. Its hands-on coverage also gave stabilization a favorable initial impression in DPReview TV testing, but did not establish a result that can be generalized to every lens, movement or setting. These are review observations, not measurements supplied here. DPReview full review DPReview GH6 hands-on review
Battery life
DPReview reports shorter battery life than the GH5-era predecessor but does not provide a battery-runtime figure in the cited findings. Plan for your own shooting schedule and carry appropriate spare power rather than relying on an unverified hours-per-charge estimate. DPReview full review

GH6 or GH7?
The GH6 is no longer Panasonic’s latest flagship hybrid. Panasonic UK currently describes the GH7 as having a 25.2 MP BSI CMOS sensor, phase-detection autofocus, internal ProRes RAW HQ and 32-bit float recording. Those are stated features, not proof that the GH7 will produce better results in every situation. Panasonic UK GH7 product page
| Decision point | GH6 | GH7 |
|---|---|---|
| Autofocus | Contrast-detect DFD; DPReview noted possible visible wobble or flutter. | Panasonic UK lists phase-detection autofocus. |
| Internal recording options | Internal ProRes 422/422 HQ up to the modes Panasonic specifies; internal ProRes RAW is not established by the cited GH6 material. | Panasonic UK lists internal ProRes RAW HQ. |

Compare the cameras around your actual workflow: autofocus and subject tracking, internal codecs and frame rates, whether RAW capture requires an external recorder, audio needs, media costs, low-light expectations, battery endurance, lenses, stabilization and total system cost. Who should buy the GH6?
- It may suit you if internal codec choice, high-frame-rate options, cooling and the Micro Four Thirds lens system matter more than class-leading autofocus or low-light performance.
- Consider another camera or compare with the GH7 if dependable subject tracking is central to your work, you often shoot in dim light, or you need internal ProRes RAW HQ.
- Budget beyond the body for media that meets the requirements of your chosen modes, spare power for longer shoots, and any audio accessories your setup needs.
No current retail price or stock level is established here. Panasonic’s £1,999.99 body-only price was its UK launch RRP in February 2022, so it should not be treated as today’s price. Panasonic UK launch announcement
