It combines spaced-review scheduling with prerequisite tracking, so a recommendation can account for both what is due and which topics depend on it. Its author, Kuldeep Ece 025, frames the motivation this way: “Flashcard apps didn’t understand dependencies. Note apps didn’t schedule reviews. So I built my own.”
What PALEE does
PALEE treats an Obsidian vault as its data store rather than moving a learner’s material into a separate platform. It can work with existing topic notes, save study state in their frontmatter, and provide commands to choose a next topic, practice explaining a topic, and view progress.
The project post illustrates frontmatter with a schema marker, topic ID and title, prerequisites, mastery, ease factor, review interval, and due date. It also shows example output recommending “Pod Lifecycle in Kubernetes” and reporting progress of 23.45%. Those are illustrations from the author’s post, not independently measured outcomes or guarantees about what another vault will show.
How its recommendation is meant to work
Spaced reviews plus a prerequisite graph
The author describes a hand-built SM-2 spaced-repetition scheduler alongside a directed acyclic graph (DAG) of topic dependencies. The scheduler handles review timing; the graph represents which topics must come first. The intended benefit is that a recommendation can be traced to topics that are due and to the dependencies a topic unlocks or relies on. This is a description of PALEE’s design, not a comparative finding about other learning tools.

Prerequisites before advanced topics
According to the project post, roadmap imports are checked as a DAG, and this validation works offline. That matters when a roadmap contains a cycle or places a topic before a required foundation: the tool is designed to catch dependency problems without needing an AI endpoint for that check.
AI tutoring at the edges
The AI tutor asks the learner to explain a concept and grades the explanation. The author distinguishes that tutoring role from the deterministic scheduling core, and says the learner is asked to confirm before consequential changes are saved. The post says the tutor can use any OpenAI-compatible endpoint; it does not establish that every endpoint is free, uses equivalent terms, or behaves identically.

Continuing a study session later
PALEE can save sessions as Obsidian notes and maintain a 250-word “hot memory” file intended to help resume a later session. These are project features described by the author; the post does not independently evaluate how well the memory preserves context.
Working with existing notes and roadmaps
The author describes an adoption workflow for bringing existing topic notes into PALEE. The --auto-chain option, available for adoption and roadmap commands according to the post, resolves Obsidian wikilinks into dependencies. The author also reports handling track scoping, sorting nested folders, and avoiding frontmatter changes to linked image files.

These details can matter in a real vault: a dependency chain should reflect the learner’s chosen track, folder ordering should remain intelligible, and image assets should not be mistaken for topic notes. They remain author-reported behavior rather than independently audited guarantees.
Implementation and reported testing
Kuldeep Ece 025 identifies the implementation as TypeScript on Node 22, using Commander for command-line handling and YAML frontmatter for storage. The author says the SM-2 and DAG components are hand-rolled, and describes atomic writes, file locking for concurrent Obsidian edits, and support for Windows and Unix paths.

Who may find the design useful
PALEE’s approach is most relevant to someone who already keeps learning notes in Obsidian and wants review timing and prerequisite structure alongside them. Its central design trade-off is explicit: the vault remains the working store, while the learner takes on a command-line workflow and, for AI tutoring, configures an OpenAI-compatible endpoint. The source describes the project’s intended behavior but does not provide independent comparisons with other tools or evidence that it suits every study workflow.
