To pair a new wireless gaming controller, first identify both the controller model and the device it will connect to: the steps for a DualSense on PS5 are not the same as pairing it with Windows, and Switch accessories differ by console generation. For a first DualSense on PS5, use a USB cable that transfers data and press the PS button. For Windows 11, put the specific controller into Bluetooth pairing mode, then add it in Windows Settings. The steps below cover DualSense with PS5 or Windows, an Xbox Wireless Controller with Windows 11, original Switch controllers with an original Switch, and the Switch 2 Pro Controller with Switch 2.
What should I check before pairing a controller?
Check the controller’s exact model, the console generation or computer operating system, and the connection method supported by that combination. A controller’s power button does not necessarily put it into pairing mode, and pairing with a console is not interchangeable with pairing over Bluetooth to a PC.
- Identify the model. DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4 use different button combinations. Likewise, the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller and Switch 2 Pro Controller are not interchangeable across those console generations.
- Check the destination. Confirm whether you are connecting to PS5, a Windows PC, original Switch or Switch 2. The Xbox steps below are for Windows 11, not an Xbox console.
- Charge the controller. A low battery can interrupt setup. If the computer has Bluetooth, make sure it is on; if it does not, wireless Bluetooth pairing will require compatible Bluetooth hardware.
- Choose cable or wireless setup carefully. A cable used to initialize a controller may need to carry data, not just power. A wired connection also does not guarantee that every controller feature works in every game.
Keep the controller close to the device while pairing. If it has been connected to another device, switch it off or disconnect it before starting the new pairing procedure.

Choose the route that your controller and destination both support. USB can be useful when the PC lacks Bluetooth or when a feature requires a wired connection: Sony says DualSense PC haptics require USB, and it supports a USB-C connection to a PC. Bluetooth avoids a cable during play, but it requires Bluetooth capability on the computer and the correct wireless pairing procedure.

Do not assume that any USB cable will complete setup. For first-time DualSense pairing with PS5, use a charge-and-data cable; a charge-only cable can make the controller appear to charge without registering it. The relevant Nintendo USB routes also depend on the specific console and controller generation. If you already have compatible hardware, you do not need to buy a new controller or adapter just to follow these steps.
How do I connect a new DualSense controller to PS5?
For a first DualSense controller, connect it to the PS5 with a charge-and-data USB cable, then press PS. Sony’s PlayStation Support says the controller’s light bar blinks and its player indicator lights when it registers.
- Turn on the PS5.
- Connect the DualSense to the console using the included cable or another suitable USB cable that supports both charging and data transfer. A charge-only cable may power the controller without completing pairing.
- Press the PS button on the controller.
- Wait for the light bar and player indicator to respond, then disconnect the cable to use the controller wirelessly.
Sony’s support guidance puts it simply: “To use your controller, you need to pair it with your console.” The wired first-time setup is a straightforward way to do that. If the controller charges but does not register, see the troubleshooting section below before assuming the controller is defective.

How do I pair a second DualSense without a cable?
If one controller is already connected, Sony also provides an on-screen route to pair another DualSense wirelessly:
- Using the connected controller, open Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories.
- On the new DualSense, hold Create and PS together until the light bar flashes.
- Select the controller when it appears in the PS5’s Bluetooth Accessories list.
Use the same pairing-mode buttons for the new controller; simply pressing PS is not the same as putting it into discovery mode for this procedure.
What does a DualSense pairing slot mean?
Sony’s current dedicated instructions describe up to four different pairing slots on a DualSense. A slot records a device the controller has been paired with; it does not mean the controller is actively connected to four devices at once. The controller still connects to a destination device, and Sony describes switching among registered devices using the PS button and an action button. Follow the current on-screen or manufacturer instructions for the exact switching sequence, particularly if the controller’s firmware has changed.

How do I pair a DualSense controller with a Windows PC?
A DualSense can connect to supported Windows PCs over Bluetooth or by USB. For Bluetooth, turn the controller off, unplug any USB cable, hold Create and PS until the light bar blinks, then select the controller from the PC’s Bluetooth device list.

- Make sure the DualSense is off and disconnected from USB.
- Hold Create and PS until the light bar starts blinking. The blinking indicates pairing mode.
- On the PC, open the Bluetooth devices screen and select the detected controller to connect.
If you prefer a wired connection, Sony also supports connecting the DualSense to a PC by USB-C. Check the cable and port if the computer does not detect it. Pairing only establishes a connection to Windows; game compatibility and available controller features can vary. Sony cautions that “Depending on the device, certain features of the controller might not be available.” Its guidance also notes that PC haptics require a USB connection, so do not assume Bluetooth and USB provide identical features.
If a game does not respond to the controller, check that game’s controller-support information separately. Sony directs PC players to review the game’s Steam controller-support information where applicable. A controller appearing in Windows Bluetooth settings does not by itself confirm that a particular game supports it.
How do I pair an Xbox Wireless Controller with Windows 11?
For a Bluetooth-capable Xbox Wireless Controller, turn it on with the Xbox button, hold Pair for three seconds until the Xbox button flashes, and add it from Windows 11’s Bluetooth settings. These are Microsoft’s Windows instructions; they are not verified steps for pairing an Xbox controller to an Xbox console.
- Press the Xbox button to turn on the controller.
- Hold the Pair button for three seconds. Wait for the Xbox button to flash, which indicates pairing mode.
- On the PC, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices and turn Bluetooth on.
- Select Add device, choose the Bluetooth option, then select the controller when it appears.
The Bluetooth route depends on the exact controller. Microsoft’s steps presume a model with Bluetooth capability, so check the model rather than assuming every older controller or third-party gamepad can use this method. If the controller does not appear, confirm Bluetooth is enabled on the PC and that the controller is flashing in pairing mode.

For an Xbox console: do not copy the Windows three-second Pair-button procedure as if it were verified console guidance. The console-specific sequence is not established here; use the instructions for the exact controller and Xbox console from Microsoft.

How do I sync original Switch controllers to an original Nintendo Switch?
On an original Switch or Switch Lite, open Controllers > Change Grip/Order, then hold the controller’s Sync button until its lights flash. Wait for the console to confirm registration. These instructions are for original Switch hardware, not a blanket procedure for Switch 2 accessories.
Pair an original Joy-Con
- On the console, choose Controllers > Change Grip/Order.
- Press and hold the small Sync button on the Joy-Con until its player lights begin to blink.
- Wait for the console to register it and show the player position.
On an original Switch, sliding Joy-Con onto the console also registers them. Switch Lite has no rails for attaching Joy-Con, so use the wireless registration route instead. Nintendo’s Joy-Con support guidance covers attachment and wireless connection. Menu wording may differ slightly by console language or software version.
Pair an original Switch Pro Controller
Use Controllers > Change Grip/Order and hold the Pro Controller’s Sync button until its lights flash, then wait for registration. Another documented route for the original Switch is to connect the original Pro Controller to the dock by USB. These options concern the original Switch Pro Controller and original Switch; do not apply them to the Switch 2 Pro Controller.
How do I pair a Switch 2 Pro Controller with Switch 2?
Nintendo documents two ways to register the Switch 2 Pro Controller: connect it by USB, or use Controllers > Change Grip/Order and hold Sync until the four player lights cycle. Nintendo says the Switch 2 Pro Controller cannot be used with the original Switch.
- USB route: connect the controller to the Switch 2 dock with its cable, or connect it directly to the console with an appropriate USB-C cable.
- Wireless registration: on Switch 2, open Controllers > Change Grip/Order.
- Hold the Pro Controller’s Sync button until the four player lights cycle.
- Wait for the console to register the controller.
The cited Nintendo instructions are for the Japanese market. Check the local console’s menu labels and bundled cable details rather than assuming packaging is identical in every country. Most importantly, match the controller generation to the console: Nintendo explicitly states that this controller does not work with the original Switch.
What if I have an older PlayStation controller?
Do not use the DualSense button combination or cable assumptions for a DUALSHOCK 4. For Bluetooth pairing, DUALSHOCK 4 uses SHARE + PS, rather than DualSense’s Create + PS. Sony’s separate Windows guidance for DUALSHOCK 4 specifies a compatible micro-USB cable or the DUALSHOCK 4 USB wireless adaptor. Check the instructions for the exact controller before following steps written for a newer model.

Why won’t my controller appear or connect?
Work through the basics in order: charge the controller, enable Bluetooth on the PC if applicable, and confirm that the controller is in the pairing mode for its exact model. If it still fails, check the cable, connection state, and manufacturer update or reset guidance before buying an accessory or installing third-party utilities.
- Check power. Charge the controller, then try again. A controller with too little power may not stay available long enough to pair.
- Confirm the destination’s connection method. A desktop PC without Bluetooth cannot discover a Bluetooth controller wirelessly unless compatible Bluetooth hardware is added. A console’s USB setup may have different requirements.
- Enter pairing mode again. Pressing the power button alone may turn on a controller without making it discoverable. Use the model-specific combination or Sync button described above, and look for the flashing light that indicates pairing mode.
- Move closer. Keep the controller near the PC or console during discovery and registration.
- Check the cable and port. If a new DualSense charges but will not initialize on PS5, replace a charge-only cable with one explicitly capable of charging and data transfer. Try another USB port as well.
- Disconnect other devices. If the controller is already connected elsewhere, turn it off or disconnect it, then start the pairing process again.
- Separate connection problems from game problems. If Windows shows the controller as connected but one game ignores it, investigate that title’s controller support rather than repeating Bluetooth pairing indefinitely.
- Use official maintenance guidance. If the basic checks fail, consult the manufacturer’s controller-update or reset instructions for that exact model before attempting a reset or purchasing replacement hardware.
Why won’t my Xbox controller show up in Bluetooth?
First confirm that the exact Xbox Wireless Controller model supports Bluetooth; not every older controller or third-party gamepad can use Microsoft’s Windows Bluetooth procedure. Then check that Bluetooth is on in Windows, turn on the controller, and hold Pair for three seconds until the Xbox button flashes. If it is not flashing, it may be powered on but not in pairing mode. If it is flashing and still does not appear, check the model’s compatibility and Microsoft’s guidance before assuming that a new adapter or replacement controller is required.
Does pairing a controller guarantee every feature will work?

Likewise, do not treat “wireless controller” as a promise that every destination has Bluetooth or supports every model. Check the model, destination, and official compatibility guidance together. If a feature matters—such as haptics on PC—verify its connection requirements before choosing Bluetooth over USB.

Start with the controller and cable you already own. A first-time PS5 DualSense setup may call for a USB-C charge-and-sync cable if the included cable is missing or unsuitable; the key requirement is data transfer as well as charging. For a PC that has no Bluetooth, a compatible Bluetooth adapter is a possible route only if the controller supports Bluetooth. It is not needed for a USB connection.

Can one DualSense be registered with more than one device?
Sony’s current dedicated guidance describes up to four different pairing slots for a DualSense controller. A registered slot is not the same as being actively connected to all those devices at once; switching registered devices uses the PS button and an action button, according to Sony’s instructions.
