Own-brand groceries are often cheaper, but neither own-brand nor branded products are automatically the better buy. Compare the true unit price and the price you can actually access, then judge the products on the qualities that matter for that category and your household.
How to compare two grocery products fairly
Use the same four checks for both products. A low shelf price alone is not enough: pack sizes, offers, product specifications and the likelihood of using everything can change the real value.
- Check the specification. Compare the same type of product, format and relevant attributes, such as salted versus unsalted. Note the net weight or volume and whether the packs are genuinely comparable.
- Compare unit prices. Read the shelf label or online listing and compare the same unit, such as price per 100g or per litre. Unit pricing expresses cost against a standard weight or volume, making different pack sizes easier to compare. The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) found that shoppers often use it for cupboard essentials, expensive items such as olive oil, similar products, promotions, unfamiliar products, changed pack sizes and bulk buys. - Work out the price available to you. Record whether a price requires a loyalty card, app, minimum spend or other condition. Compare your eligible price with the other product’s price on the same basis.
- Assess the relevant quality factors. Consider taste, ingredients or nutrition, freshness, appearance, how long it keeps and how well it suits your household. Choose factors that matter for the specific food rather than assuming one label signals quality.
- Consider how much you will use. A larger pack may have a lower unit price but poor value if some of it spoils or goes unused. This matters especially for fresh food.
What the unit price tells you—and what it cannot
Unit price is a useful first screen, not a complete verdict. It helps reveal whether a larger pack is genuinely cheaper per standard measure, but it does not tell you whether two products taste alike, have equivalent ingredients or will both be fully used.
Make sure the units match. The CMA notes that mayonnaise may be priced by weight or volume, while fruit and vegetables may be priced by weight or by item. Comparing unlike measures can make the apparent difference meaningless; compare consistent units and products that are alike.

Unit pricing can also be less useful for fresh food if buying more creates waste. The CMA’s qualitative research found that participants used unit prices less for fresh food when they worried about waste, and less for treats when quality mattered more. These findings describe the people in that research, not a representative estimate of all shoppers.
Own-brand does not always mean entry-level
Retailers may sell several own-label tiers rather than a single low-cost alternative. The CMA describes own-label ranges as a way for retailers to control quality and appearance and offer different combinations of price and quality for different preferences and budgets. A standard own-brand item is not necessarily the cheapest option in that retailer’s range.

In its November 2023 analysis, the CMA said own-label products tend to cost less than branded goods partly because their manufacturers do not spend on marketing. That is one explanation, not a rule that accounts for every price difference. The same report gave a historical Tesco baked-bean example: 28p for value Stockwell, 50p for standard own-label and £1.40 for Heinz. Those are figures from the report, not current prices. In another November 2023 comparison, one branded tin of beans cost nearly three times as much per 100g as the standard own-label equivalent and five times as much as the entry-level version. CMA: price inflation and competition in food and grocery manufacturing and supply.
What taste tests can—and cannot—show
A blind test can help answer a narrow question: how did tasters rate these particular products in that test? It cannot establish that every own-brand product matches every branded alternative, or predict which one you will prefer.

Which? reported that Heinz Tomato Ketchup and Asda Classic Tomato Ketchup each scored 77% in its blind taste test. Its listed typical prices were 54p and 18p per 100g respectively, correct as of August 2025. In a separate spreadable-butter comparison, Lurpak Spreadable Slightly Salted scored 72% and Aldi Nordpak 75%; listed unit prices were £1.19 and 44p per 100g, also correct as of August 2025. Treat these as dated examples, not current shelf prices or a verdict on all ketchup or spreads. Which?: best cheap supermarket food and drink.
Include loyalty prices and promotions in the comparison
A loyalty price is a lower price offered to scheme members while a higher price for the same item is available to non-members. The CMA’s 2024 review found that, across its sample of loyalty promotions at five supermarkets, average savings for members ranged from 17% to 25%. That describes the review sample, not a guaranteed saving on any product or today’s offers. Its survey also found that 97% of UK shoppers belonged to at least one loyalty scheme and shoppers had an average of three memberships. CMA: review of price marking in the groceries sector.

For your own comparison, use the price you qualify for and check the unit price on that offer. A member price is not available to everyone, and both standard and loyalty prices can change. Check the shelf label or retailer listing at the time you shop rather than relying on an older example.

There is no single measure of grocery quality that works for every item. For fresh produce, freshness and appearance may be central; for a sauce, taste and ingredients may matter more; for chilled food, use-by dates and how long it keeps can affect whether you will use it.

In the Food Standards Agency’s 2024 Food and You 2 Wave 7 survey, respondents cited price or value for money (61%), quality (39%), freshness (29%) and use-by dates or how long food keeps (27%) among shopping attributes. When asked what they used to judge food quality, respondents selected freshness (55%), taste (48%) and appearance (43%). These are survey responses about what people consider, not objective scores of food quality. Food Standards Agency: Food and You 2, Wave 7, Chapter 4.
- For fresh food: check freshness, likely shelf life and whether the quantity suits your plans.
- For packaged staples: compare unit price, pack size and the ingredients or nutrition you care about.
- For treats or strongly flavoured foods: taste preference may justify paying more, even when the cheaper product has a lower unit price.
- For products you have not tried: a small pack can limit the cost of finding out whether you like it.
A simple decision rule
Start with products that match in type and specification. Compare their unit prices using the same measure, then account for any offer conditions and how much you are likely to use. If the cheaper option also meets your quality needs, it is better value for you. If a branded product’s taste, ingredients, keeping time or another relevant attribute matters enough to justify the difference, the higher price may be worthwhile.
Recheck prices when you buy: the Which? examples above were priced as of August 2025, and the CMA’s product comparisons are from 2023. They illustrate how to compare, not what a shopper should expect to pay now.
