What are the three Overwatch roles?
Overwatch is a free-to-play, team-based action game whose current core experience is 5v5, according to Blizzard’s game homepage. Its official Heroes page groups heroes into Tank, Damage, and Support. These labels describe broad team contributions, not a complete account of how every hero plays.

Those role descriptions come from Blizzard; the “what it can feel like” column is a practical interpretation to help you decide what sounds appealing.
Which Overwatch role should you play?
Start with the activity you would most enjoy doing repeatedly, rather than trying to guess which role is strongest. Consider these preferences:

- Choose Tank if you like taking the lead, absorbing attention, and helping your team move through defensive positions.

These are starting points, not rules. The role tells you the broad job; it does not tell you whether you will enjoy a particular hero’s tools, tempo, or positioning.
How do you choose an Overwatch main?
- Pick a role based on the work you want to do. Use the Tank, Damage, and Support descriptions above to narrow your first choices.
- Try more than one hero in that role. Heroes within a role can use different abilities and play styles. Blizzard’s roster and individual hero pages are useful for comparing what each one does: browse the Heroes roster.
- Notice the decisions each hero asks you to make. Compare how close you need to be to a fight, where you prefer to position, how much mobility you want, the mechanical demands you enjoy, and what kind of utility you bring to your team. These are practical comparison points, not official Blizzard classifications.
- Keep the heroes whose play patterns stay enjoyable. A main is a personal preference, so pay attention to whether you like making that hero’s decisions and repeating that style of play. You can settle on a favorite without treating it as the only hero you should ever use.
Should you choose a main by win rate or pick rate?
Not by itself. Blizzard’s Hero Statistics page reports pick, win, and ban rates and says the data updates with each patch. Its filters include role, input, game mode, tier, map, and region. That makes the figures a patch- and filter-specific view of performance, not a verdict on which hero you personally should main.

If you consult the page, match its filters as closely as possible to the context you care about, and treat the result as context rather than a guarantee of how a hero will perform for you. Because the figures change with patches, a number viewed at one time should not be presented as a permanent ranking.

It can. Blizzard describes Stadium as a distinct round-based mode with separate rank progression and mode-specific roster and season changes. The Stadium mode page is the place to check that mode’s current details. Do not assume every hero or strategy applies identically between Stadium and the core experience.

Heroes and balance can change as the live game receives updates, so revisit the official roster and performance statistics when your question is about the current patch. For example, Blizzard’s homepage has announced Doctrine as a new Support hero, with a limited-time trial scheduled for September 12–14 and a Season 5 debut scheduled for October 20; those announced dates are time-sensitive, so check the Doctrine hero page and current game information for present availability and abilities.
