Choose a role by the contribution you want to make: take pressure and contest space as Tank, pursue eliminations as Damage, or enable teammates as Support. Then compare individual heroes by their movement, engagement range, survivability, and abilities. Role labels narrow the field; they do not tell you exactly how every hero feels to play.

What do the three Overwatch roles do?

Blizzard defines three broad roles: Tank, Damage, and Support. Their descriptions are a useful first filter, but each role contains heroes with distinct kits and playstyles. Blizzard’s hero page describes the roles and their functions.

Tank: take pressure and contest space

Tank heroes soak up damage and help break fortified positions, including closely grouped enemies and narrow chokepoints. Explore Tank if you enjoy contesting positions, drawing pressure, or disrupting a defended area.

Damage: engage enemies and pursue eliminations

Damage heroes seek out, engage, and defeat enemies with varied tools, abilities, and playstyles. This role may suit you if you enjoy active engagement and applying elimination pressure.

Support: empower allies with more than healing

Support heroes can heal, shield, boost damage, and disable enemies. Support is not simply a healer role: its broader purpose is to empower allies through different forms of utility.

How do sub-roles and Perks refine the choice?

Blizzard’s 2026 overview adds sub-roles within each core role. Its examples include Tank Bruisers, Initiators, and Stalwarts; Damage Sharpshooters, Flankers, Specialists, and Recon; and Support Tacticians, Medics, and Survivors. The overview names the heroes assigned to each sub-role and describes a passive for each. Check Blizzard’s overview for the current assignments and details, since roster labels and passives can change with updates.

The overview also describes hero-specific Perks as ways to adapt a kit to a playstyle or the demands of a battle. A role is a starting point; the hero’s kit, sub-role, and available in-game options add more detail to how that hero can be played.

How to choose a hero that fits your playstyle

  1. Choose the contribution you want to make. Decide whether you would rather absorb pressure and contest positions, actively engage enemies, or enable teammates. Use Blizzard’s role descriptions to identify a starting role.
  2. Compare how heroes engage. Consider range, movement, survivability, and ability style. Use sub-roles and kit details to distinguish heroes within a role instead of assuming they all play alike.
  3. Try a small range of heroes and adjust. Pick heroes that appeal to you, then switch if the role or kit does not feel enjoyable or useful in the match. There is no universal hero-selection test; this is a practical way to explore the roster.
  4. Keep balance in perspective. Avoid treating any hero as universally best. In a historical balance discussion, Blizzard director Aaron Keller described considering factors such as pick rate, skill tier, region, and platform, and noted that situational picks can be appropriate. Those comments describe balance philosophy from an earlier season, not a current tier list; see Keller’s discussion.

When should you switch heroes during a match?

Switch when the hero’s role or kit no longer feels useful for what you want to do in that match, or when another option better fits your preferred engagement style. Reconsider the same factors you used to choose: contribution, range, movement, survivability, and abilities. This is a flexible decision, not a universal rule or guarantee of a better result.

What role labels can—and cannot—tell you

Role labels explain broad team functions; they do not guarantee a particular hero will suit your preferences or be the right choice in every match. Blizzard’s historical Role Queue announcement explains an earlier role-choice system and team arrangement. It should not be used as a guide to current composition rules.
