The Overture Maps Foundation is a Linux Foundation–hosted collaboration that develops shared, open map data for use across mapping products and services. Founded in December 2022 by AWS, Meta, Microsoft, and TomTom, it combines contributors’ data around a common schema and stable identifiers so developers can build on a shared geographic foundation rather than start from scratch.

What is the Overture Maps Foundation?

Overture is a collaborative mapping-data project, not a consumer navigation app. Its stated aim is to create foundational map data that companies, civic organizations, and other communities can contribute to and reuse. The Linux Foundation announced its formation on 15 December 2022; the Joint Development Foundation described it as a Joint Development Foundation Projects, LLC Series.

The project’s work includes a common map schema, datasets assembled from multiple contributors, a platform for producing and distributing those datasets, and the Global Entity Reference System (GERS). Overture describes its data as open and extensible, allowing users to build specialized or proprietary layers on top of a shared base.

Who founded Overture Maps?

The four founding companies were Amazon Web Services (AWS), Meta, Microsoft, and TomTom. The launch announcement said they would combine resources to create map data that is complete, accurate, and refreshed as the physical world changes. Those are project goals, not a published independent benchmark of the resulting data.

How does Overture make map data interoperable?

A shared schema

A common schema gives contributors and users a consistent way to represent map features. Without an agreed structure, data from different sources can use incompatible field names, formats, or definitions, making it harder to combine or maintain.

Data from multiple contributors

Overture’s model brings together data from participating organizations in shared datasets. The foundation presents that approach as a way to pursue global coverage and update frequency that may be difficult for one organization to achieve alone. The amount, quality, and update cadence of any particular feature still depend on the relevant dataset and its contributors.

Stable identifiers through GERS

GERS assigns unique, stable IDs to real-world entities such as buildings, streets, and places. Those IDs are intended to help users recognize and join references to the same entity across datasets and sources, even when the sources describe it differently. GERS is an identity and linking system; it is not, by itself, a guarantee that every record is complete or correctly positioned.

How is Overture different from OpenStreetMap or Google Maps?

They address related mapping needs but are not interchangeable products. Overture is a collaborative effort to publish structured, reusable map data using a common schema and stable identifiers. OpenStreetMap is a community-built map database. Google Maps is a consumer-facing mapping service. Overture’s stated model is particularly focused on making contributions interoperable and enabling downstream services to build on a shared data layer.

The available launch and project information does not establish that Overture is more complete, more positionally accurate, or fresher than OpenStreetMap, Google Maps, or another map source. Those qualities vary by place, feature type, and date. A meaningful comparison for a particular use case requires checking the relevant coverage and update information and validating the data against local ground truth.

Can you download or query Overture map data?

Overture has published data releases: its announcement archive records a first worldwide open map dataset in July 2023, a beta release in April 2024, general availability of several global datasets in July 2024, and later transportation and GERS releases. This confirms a release history, but it does not establish that every planned theme or cloud integration is currently available in every region.

Overture’s archive also documents access through Google Cloud BigQuery and Snowflake, with support from CARTO. These are useful routes for analysts and data engineers who want to query data in a cloud environment rather than build a local pipeline. Because datasets and integrations can change, check the current Overture release information and the relevant cloud catalog before relying on a specific table, theme, or workflow. The information available here does not specify a single current download command, table name, or installation path.

What does Overture’s open-data approach permit?

The foundation describes its map data as open and extensible under an open data license. That makes reuse and the ability to add specialized layers central to the project’s design. The launch information does not name a specific license or detail its attribution, redistribution, or other terms, so users should review the license attached to the particular dataset before using or republishing it.

How did Overture develop after its launch?

Date Milestone What the dated source establishes
15 December 2022 Foundation announced The Linux Foundation announced the project and its four founding companies.
First half of 2023 Initial datasets expected Overture and TomTom stated this as an expectation at launch; it was a forecast, not a release date.
July 2023 First worldwide open map dataset Overture’s announcement archive records the first worldwide dataset.
April 2024 Beta release Overture’s archive records a beta release.
July 2024 Several global datasets reached general availability Overture’s archive records this release milestone.
14 May 2024 28 members Overture reported this membership count, up from four founding members 18 months earlier.
13 July 2026 50 members Overture reported reaching this membership count.

The timeline shows a project that moved from an announced collaboration to published data and additional releases. It does not, on its own, establish the current contents or geographic quality of any individual dataset.

Who may benefit from Overture?

  • Developers building map services: A shared schema and stable entity IDs can make it easier to combine map features and add an application-specific layer.
  • Data engineers and analysts: Documented BigQuery and Snowflake access provides cloud-query routes for supported datasets, with CARTO involved in the recorded integrations.
  • GIS teams: Esri has said its engineers would contribute data and technology to help create complete, accurate, and extensible real-world map data. That announcement describes a contribution intent; it does not establish that every Overture dataset is available through a particular Esri workflow.
  • Organizations contributing geographic information: The project’s shared schema and open-data aim are intended to support contributions that can be reused alongside other sources.
