overGrive is a third-party Linux desktop client for Google Drive. It can synchronize Drive files with a local folder, upload local-folder changes back to Drive, and run in a vendor-described backup-only mode. It is not Google’s own Drive for desktop application. The supplied Google documentation does not establish a native Linux release, so overGrive is an independent alternative rather than an official Google client.

What overGrive does

overGrive creates a local working copy of selected Google Drive content and synchronizes changes between that folder and Drive. The vendor also describes a one-way backup mode for sending local files to Drive without treating Drive as a two-way mirror.

Capability What the vendor documentation says
Two-way synchronization Drive content can be synchronized to a local folder, and changes in that folder can be uploaded.
Backup-only use A one-way backup mode is available according to the product description.
Folder location You can choose a local folder, including an external drive or network share, provided it is mounted when overGrive starts.
Folder selection The product page says only top-level Drive folders can be selected.

These are vendor-described functions, not results from independent installation or performance testing.

Is overGrive an official Google Drive app for Linux?

No. overGrive is developed by a third party. Google’s official materials describe Drive for desktop, but the supplied material does not establish a native Linux version. That distinction matters for support, account authorization, update policy and troubleshooting: overGrive’s compatibility and limitations are defined by its own documentation, not by Google’s Drive for desktop support policy.

Installation requirements and package routes

The installation documentation lists Python 3.7 or later and provides distribution-specific instructions rather than one universal Linux command. Available routes described by the vendor include:

  • DEB packages for Debian-family distributions.
  • RPM packages for distributions using RPM.
  • An Arch package for Arch-family systems.
  • A legacy x86_64 AppImage.

The guide gives minimum operating-system versions for some distributions and recommends reinstalling overGrive after certain operating-system upgrades. Its AppImage notes warn that older systems may have an incompatible GLib version. Do not assume that the presence of a package format means every current release is supported equally.

Typical setup sequence

  1. Confirm that your distribution and desktop environment appear on the vendor’s current compatibility and download pages.
  2. Install Python 3.7 or newer if it is not already available.
  3. Use the package route documented for your distribution: DEB, RPM, Arch package or the legacy x86_64 AppImage where appropriate.
  4. Complete the Google Drive authorization flow described in the installation guide. The documentation also describes creating a Google Drive API client ID, so be prepared to follow that project-specific setup rather than assuming a one-click Google login.
  5. Choose the local synchronization folder and select the supported top-level Drive folders.
  6. If the folder is on an external disk or network share, mount it before overGrive starts.

Because API-console requirements and distribution instructions can change, use the current vendor setup guide for the exact screens and package commands.

Account limits and licensing

The vendor says multiple accounts can be configured, but only one account can be active at a time. Simultaneous synchronization of several accounts is unavailable, and each configured account requires its own license.

The overGrive homepage states, “The overGrive license does not expire.” That is the project’s description of its license terms. The supplied material does not establish a current price, so check the vendor’s license page before purchase.

Shared files, folders and shortcuts

Shared content requires particular care. Vendor guidance says shared items can be moved or shortcut into My Drive so they can be synchronized. The installation documentation warns that multiple shortcuts to the same shared Google file or folder are unsupported.

If your workflow depends on Shared drives, repeated shortcuts or complex shortcut trees, review the current documentation and test a representative folder before making overGrive your primary sync method. The limitation is about the vendor’s documented behavior, not a general statement about what Google Drive itself supports.

What the current release information shows

A vendor changelog search result lists version 3.5.6 dated 25 May 2026. That entry mentions an appindicator display fix for XFCE and LXQt and improved support for shared file and folder shortcuts.

The entry demonstrates recent release activity, but it does not by itself prove reliability, security, performance or the quality of support. No independent sync, recovery or speed testing is established here.

Who should consider overGrive?

It may fit if you need

  • A visible local folder for working with Google Drive files from Linux applications.
  • Two-way synchronization or the vendor-described backup-only workflow.
  • A package for a supported Debian, RPM, Arch-family or listed distribution.
  • Control over a sync location on an external disk or mounted network share.

Look more carefully if you need

  • Several Google accounts syncing simultaneously.
  • Complex Shared-drive structures or multiple shortcuts to identical shared items.
  • A Google-maintained Linux client with Google’s own support and update process.
  • Independently verified reliability, conflict handling or recovery guarantees.

Practical checks before installing

  • Match your exact distribution release and CPU architecture to the current package instructions.
  • Verify that Python 3.7 or later is available.
  • Decide whether you need two-way sync or only one-way backup.
  • Confirm that the intended local folder is mounted before startup if it is external or network-based.
  • Plan for one active account at a time and a separate license for each configured account.
  • Review how shared files and shortcuts are organized before selecting folders.
  • Read the current setup, download, changelog and license pages because these details can change.

Bottom line

overGrive is a documented third-party option for giving Linux users a local Google Drive folder, with two-way synchronization and a backup-only mode. Its main trade-offs are the setup work, account concurrency limit, per-account licensing, and restrictions around shared-file shortcuts. It is best evaluated against your distribution, folder layout and account needs rather than treated as an official Google Drive for desktop replacement.
